  1. According to salary cap guru Joel Corry, the Carolina Panthers will save 1.5 million dollars this NFL season by extending the contract of TE Greg Olsen. It may not sound like much, but 1.5 million could go a long way this season in improving the Panthers roster, especially on offense. Cam Newton by all accounts has had few weapons around him during his time with Carolina. 1.5 million in cap space could be the difference between signing another journeyman wide receiver or a higher caliber player like Torrey Smith. The Carolina Panthers were recently mentioned in a article on NFL.COM as a likely landing spot for Smith. "There isn't a lot of landing-spot buzz around Smith, but how about Carolina? The Panthers desperately need speed at the position and could pair Smith alongside last year's rookie sensation Kelvin Benjamin. That would fill a need for the team while giving Cam Newton a true deep threat."
  2. The Carolina Panthers announced today they have re-signed Pro Bowl Tight End Greg Olsen. http://www.panthers.com/news/article-2/Olsen-signs-extension/66da189e-e650-4615-a902-391eaf2afadb Olsen has proved to be an important cog in the Carolina Panthers offense since joining the team alongside Cam Newton in 2011. Olsen turned out to be the most reliable receiving threat on the team. Olsen also has improved greatly in his blocking ability, something that contributed to his Pro Bowl appearance last season. Olsen turns 30 this year and still should have a few more years of top performance. This is a great deal for both Olsen, who has settled in and made Charlotte his home, and the Carolina Panthers.
  3. According to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers have begun contract negotiations. Apparently, both sides are happy to let the dust settle on the upcoming Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson contracts before talks get too serious. Then, they will use those contracts as a reference for Newton's upcoming deal. Don't be shocked if Cam Newton insists on more money than both Luck and Wilson, as Newton was a much larger part of any success his offensive unit had. He may have a point, Cam Newton and his legs are a big reason that the anemic Panthers offense led by Mike Shula scored any points at all. Don't expect a deal to come any time soon, but the fact that both sides are in long term talks should be comforting enough for Panthers fans.
  4. Cam Newton should be paid more than Luck or Wilson. If you ask yourself what percentage of the overall offensive success is each QB responsible for, Cam Newton comes out well above Andrew Luck or Russell Wilson. Cam Newton and his legs are the main reason the Panthers offense had any success at all last season. If not for his ability to stay alive with his physical talents when linemen and linebackers are chasing him, the Panthers would have been ranked dead last in the league. In other words, Cam Newton is a huge band-aid holding together an inept offense. Partly due to lack of weapons, partly due to a below average coordinator, the Panthers offense was more of a hindrance than a help in the playoff race. Whatever the reasons for the bad offense, Cam Newton made sure it was at least competitive. I'm not saying Cam Newton will get more money. I'm not saying the Panthers will pay more money. I'm saying if you look at the situation objectively, Cam and his agent have a serious argument for more.

  6. Charles Johnson has the biggest cap hit on the Panthers roster this year at 20 million. At first glance a restructure might be in order. But Johnson has already restructed twice in the past two seasons. Also, he is slated to be a UFA in 2017 so there isn't a whole lot of time left on his contract to play with in terms of restructure. It seems like CJ is a good candidate for a contract extension. Although it seems like he should be older (to me at least), he is only 28 years old and has plenty left in the tank. Extending could lessen the cap hit this year and next year, turning his salary into a signing bonus and pro rating it over the life of the contract. Also it would make sure Charles is in a Panthers uniform for the next several seasons.
