PFF Panthers Player Rankings & Overall Grades - through week 4

Recommended Posts

PFF is now accepting a new category of subscription, an annual subscription for their "player grades" and matchups.  ($19.99 for a year).

I decided I'd go ahead and subscribe, though I don't think it provides nearly as much data as their premium stats, which are no longer available.  Oh well.

I've compiled their rankings and overall player grades for all the Panthers.  Supposedly these grades are through week 4 of the season, but looking at the DT / DE snap counts especially (and the absence of Jarred Allen and Ryan Delaire's names), I'm not sure all the positions are up to date.

See what you make of them.

First, here's the data for all of our players sorted by their overall grade.  (Note the colors are my own addition, they don't exactly match PFF's color system.)

UPDATE I got clarification from PFF.  These grades represent a rolling season average, and also, it looks like they are up to date through week 4 for all players, although our two new DEs (Allen & Delaire) are not yet listed.

Here are the details for all of our Offensive Players, by position. (Again, colors are my own)

And here's our Defense.  I'm pretty shocked at how poorly our LBs are graded.   I guess much of that is due to Luke's absence, and struggles against the run?  Also, our DT grades seem low.

It's weird how TD has a bad grade considering how high he was last year.  I mean he's had some slip ups but still has looked really solid.  Also, I would be curious about Shaq's grade before the Tampa game.

as pasrt of this new subscription at PFF, you can click on a player's name and see a graph with each player's scores week by week.

From those graphs, I pulled the week by week totals for TD, Shaq and AJ :

 Week 1Week 2Week 3Week 4
Thomas Davis
overall81.867.059.364.1
coverage80.685.473.777.4
pass rush65.843.144.664.8
run def79.737.736.137.5

Shaq Thompson
overall59.166.978.861.8
coverage68.277.081.473.4
pass rush60.078.179.180.7
run def41.240.666.235.2

AJ Klein
overall77.080.472.350.5
coverage75.480.967.048.1
pass rush47.351.668.874.6
run def78.674.075.853.3

UPDATE:  I received an email from PFF in response to my question for clarification.  These are NOT actual weekly grades, but merely rolling season averages week by week.

OK, I'm officially CONFUSED.

In posting those graphs, I've just now realized that the current grades (e.g. overall grade listed in the ranking table I posted at the beginning), matches the week 4 grade.

e.g. Thomas Davis is shown as having an "overall grade" of 64.1, but that matches his week 4 overall grade on the graph I posted above and the week by week data I copied from PFF.   According to PFF's graph for Thomas Davis, his overall grades have been:

81.86759.364.1

If you were to average those 4 grades you'd get:  68.1

So, either the current overall grade is actually merely the week 4 grade and NOT some kind of season average, OR, the grades shown on the graphs for each week are some kind of rolling average (moving trend) and not the actual grade for each week...

Yuck.  I miss the weekly premium stats.  Hopefully what these grades are will become clearer.  In the meantime, if anyone understands the PFF grading system better than I do, please chime in.  Thanks!

I received an email from PFF today in response to my question about these grades, especially the weekly grades that show up when one clicks on an individual player's name.

The grades listed week by week (and which I've posted above for the Panthers linebackers, for instance) represent moving season grades, not a true weekly grade.  So, for instance, for Shaq's coverage grade to improve from 68 to 77 from week 1 to week 2 would suggest his week 2 coverage play was very strong - perhaps in the 80s.  By contrast, for AJ Klein's run defense season grade to drop from 75.8 in week 3 to 53.3 in week 4 suggests his actual week 4 run def grade must have been abysmal.

I've found PFF's grades for Ryan DelAire and Jared Allen.  Wow.  DelAire got great grades for his first week with us.
He's ranked as the 11th best DE in the league!  But it's odd that his overall grade is so much higher than his individual grades for pass rush or run def.

91CAR Ryan Delaire rank 11 / overall 82.2/pass rush 79.6 / run def 75.5/ coverage  60.0
69CAR Jared Allen rank 79 / overall66.7/ pass rush71.1/ run def 50.7 / coverage55.3
