Impeachment thread

Also if Pelosi hadn’t opened an impeachment inquiry there is no way in hell they would have ever saw the transcripts that the White House was pressured to release.

If this statement is true, then it's all the more reason Congress MUST move forward with impeachment.

If the current state of our government is such that gross incompetence, negligence, misconduct and criminality on the part of the President of the United States cannot be curtailed because the partisan apparatchiks simply won't allow him to be held accountable, then the American people must know, must see how powerless the current process is to undermine an enabled demagogue, and demand a change.

I've said many times that if there is one blessing about the Trump presidency, it's that he's an incompetent buffoon. If a competent politician was operating with such impunity, our Democracy would have already collapsed.

But he's writing the playbook for Hitler 2.0. Anyone president with an ounce of shrewdness, and a majority in Congress could literally make himself king of the world.

Lol! @bull123 poo'd this. Because of course he would.

This isn't a partisan statement at all! It's about the health and security of our democracy and holding a demagogue of ANY party affiliation accountable. There is no way you could read this and say, "that's a bad idea," unless you don't really give a poo about democracy, you just care about your party "winning."

I'm Jack's complete lack of surprise.

I don't think I actually said not to impeach, but just that it will be an exercise in futility.  The truth is though that we are in a political quagmire, and there is no good alternative.  Letting him hang himself and lose the next election would be the best of the bad alternatives though.  If by some chance he wins in 2020, they can still impeach him during his second term.

One option could be a public censure.  Still might not matter much, but at least it would get congressional disapproval on record, but without the grandstanding that will occur in impeachment hearings and a Senate trial.

But isn't a censure even more futile than impeachment proceedings?  Trump would just laugh and lie that off...

At least w impeachment they will force the senate republicans to defend him.

Censure would not be leading to things like this:

--

Rep. James Comer, a member of the House Oversight and Reform Committee and a Republican from Kentucky, told CNN this morning he believes the Trump administration "needs to answer" why they used a highly secure system for the Ukraine call record.

"I think that is a question that the Trump administration needs to answer," Comer said about the decision to move the call record.

Impeachment is not their job.  The constitution grants the house members the power to impeach.  It doesn't obligate them to.  Their job is to decide whether impeachment is in the best interest of the country and their district.

It most certainly does.

The bold is from: http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/09/ukraine-scandal-trump-phone-call-giuiliani-pence-barr-mulvaney-impeachment.html

The rest is mine.

Another example of the GOP blinders being applied is the myopic idea that the phone call is the beginning and the end of this entire thing.

How soon we forget that Giuliani was in Ukraine a few months ago and admitted he was looking for info and assurances:

"Last spring, Rudy Giuliani was openly pressuring Kiev to investigate Joe Biden. Giuliani told the New York Times, “We’re meddling in an investigation … because that information will be very, very helpful to my client.” The key word there was “we’re.” The first-person plural indicated Giuliani was not carrying out this mission alone. A series of reports have revealed how many other government officials were involved in the scheme."

Keep in mind, this is not a State Department attorney, it's not a Intel Community attorney. It's the personal lawyer for Trump acting on the behest of Trump to pitch political and military assistance. Both Congress and the Senate had bilaterally passed the military aid package. The only person who was holding it up was Trump.... exactly a week ahead of the phone call.

In the meantime, there are about 1,000 US troops in Ukraine acting as advisors and training personnel in the use of the weapons being provided. President Donald Fugging Trump essentially jeopardized the lives of US troops working in the region by withholding military aid so he could get some dirt on Joe Biden. The simple fact that he hung US troops out to dry should be enough for impeachment.

"When Trump ordered military aid to Ukraine to be frozen, he went through his chief of staff and budget director Mick Mulvaney. Congress had passed the aid, and Ukraine was under military attack from Russia, a fact that made the halting of the assistance worrisome to numerous officials in two branches of government. As the Times reported, lawmakers and State Department staffers were asking why the money hadn’t gone through."

"They were given cover stories: Lawmakers “were first told the assistance was being reviewed to determine whether it was in the best interest of foreign policy,” the Times reported this week. “Other administration officials said, without detail, there was a review on corruption in Ukraine, according to current and former officials. Then, as August drew to a close, other officials told lawmakers they were trying to gauge the effectiveness of the aid, a claim that struck congressional aides as odd.”

"Lots of officials were involved in disseminating these cover stories to hide the fact that Trump held back the aid to leverage Ukraine to investigate Biden. One of them was Mike Pence, who told some confused officials that the aid was being held up “based on concerns from the White House about ‘issues of corruption.’” Pence knew perfectly well what this really meant — asked point blank if the aid was being held up over Ukraine’s failure to investigate Biden, he replied “as President Trump had me make clear, we have great concerns about issues of corruption.” In other words, yes, Ukraine needed to investigate Biden if it wanted the money."

Trump has tried to trot out some ridiculous story about Joe Biden, while he was VP, threatening to withhold aid unless the country's top prosecutor was fired. Trump paints this picture that it was all Biden acting on his own in order to protect his son. Nothing could be further from the truth. Biden, at the request of the G7, the EU, and several other countries was simply the messenger.

"Giuliani, though is the central figure. He has employed very little subterfuge. Giuliani told the Washington Post he kept Trump informed of his work in Ukraine for months, and declared, “My narrow interest is for the benefit of my client.” The apparent reason for his candor was to make it known to Ukraine that he was not a goofy cable-television blatherer but the president’s designated representative for Ukraine policy. If Ukraine wanted to get anything done, it had to work with Rudy.

Ukraine got the message. Its officials “expressed concern to U.S. senators that the aid had been held up as a penalty for resisting that pressure” to investigate Biden, reports the Wall Street Journal.

American foreign policy operates in regimented and bureaucratized ways. Turning over the machinery to the president’s personal attorney, who is not a foreign-policy expert or even a government employee, distorted the entire process, in ways that were noticeable throughout the government. The Washington Post has the most detailed account of the contortions. Giuliani circumvented unhelpful diplomats, even replacing one deemed troublesome. Several meetings on Ukraine policy at the White House leading up to the July 25 call “led some participants to fear that Trump and those close to him appeared prepared to use U.S. leverage with the new leader of Ukraine for Trump’s political gain.”

This is about so much more than just a phone call.

There's usually not a lot of conversation. Her mouth typically has something in it.

Is your point to derail this thread by your need to talk of sexual conquests of older retired women?  Its kinda pathetic.
