Was this year supposed to go this way?

I think Rivera hopes he gets another season because Cam went on IR. He's hoping that he showed that he could still win some games with an undrafted second year QB.

If Rivera coaches another season the team is going to completely implode and the corpse might smell a lot worse than the one from 2010.

That was really working at 0-2

He's stuck with a LT? His pick for LT and not going out and getting one was Williams the human turnstile. The reason we have a rookie QB is a direct result of Hurney and Rivera's personal moves. It's not like a bunch of all pro players got hurt. We actually have been quite healthy this year besides minor injuries.

What I mean by stuck with is his only other option is moving a guy over from another position, which as you pointed out has been tried and was horrible. If Daley hadn’t gotten hurt he wouldn’t necessarily have had to start Little this week.

if the 6th rounder hadn't got hurt we wouldn't have had to play the 2nd rounder nobody ever thought was ready to play.  we had big plans for darryl williams this year.   the only option is new coaches and a new gm.   this has gone from pitiful to a comedy that would be hilarious if it wasn't my team

I think Rivera resigned to his fate when the diagnosis came down. Tepper made it clear to him that this was the prove it year and the chance of that happening without Cam was always very low. The win streak just kept hope alive a longer than anyone expected.

His only hope now is that Tepper is merciful enough to give him a raincheck on that last dance with Cam. He's in "rebuild mode" now because he knows that decision has likely been made already and the rest of this season is just a formality.

I'm glad Rivera is developing the younger guys, regardless of whether he is back or not.  It is the right thing to do for the long-term interests of the team.

People can hate on Ron, but he is a good person, a good representative of the organization, and a good coach.  He didn't win Coach of the Year twice by accident.

Having said that, I do believe the time is right to go in a different direction at the end of the season.  Seeing the graphic that no coach/QB combo had ever won their first SB together after their 5th year was eye-opening.

Rivera/Newton came very close in their 5th year together.  Unfortunately, the overall trajectory has been down since then.  9 years is a long tenure in the NFL for your message not to get old.

It doesn't mean either won't have any success in the NFL again somewhere else, but I don't think it will be here.

I appreciate both of them.  We have been in a really tough division with 1 first-ballot HOF in Brees and another potential one in Ryan and have still had some good success.  Things could have been much worse, and there is certainly no guarantee the next coach will be better.

But the time is probably right to at least give it a shot.

Rivera is talking like a coach going through a rebuilding process not one that is worried about his job and the score board. He constantly talks about young players and bringing them along. Not putting them in bad positions and them growing through learning pains. I'm reading through the tea leaves but he seems almost ok with how this season has happened and knows nothing is changing like he knew even before the season started we were going to be in a bad position and be picking early.

Don't know why some asshat poo'ed this--it is something to consider.  He was smiling and relaxed on the sideline Sunday.  Maybe he is going to play the "my QB is injured" card--he sure seemed to be almost pleased Sunday.

I see your points---about 22% of his career he has been the reining NFC coach of the year.  I think the good coaches win consistently---Sean Peyton, Belichick,  Carroll, Tomlin, etc. RR is a nice person, etc.  but we are getting a little impatient with the "box of chocolates" approach to every season.
