MMQB Cam should be more like Brees

Recommended Posts

Not sure I see the big deal.  He's basically saying Cam needs to be more consistent (like Brees) in 3 key areas.  Does anyone really disagree with that?  Then he picks a play to illustrate his point.  He mentions that Cam shouldn't abandon his "sandlot skills" but needs to improve in the pocket.  That sounds great to me.  The final paragraph sums it all up pretty well.

I've been interested in his work (on MMQB and NYT) for a while because he sometimes works from my building, although I haven't seen him around lately.  Keep meaning to talk to him when he's around.  I think he's a really strong, analytical writer, and while I love reading fluff pieces on muh QB, I don't see the point in getting bent out of shape when someone takes the time to detail changes that could make Cam, and the team even better.

That said, fug Drew Brees and the Saints.

The big deal is that he didn't do his homework. Ask him when you see him how many times the Panthers run four verticals, which players they have capable of getting behind a defense in that formation, and how that affects Cam's YPA.

I'm not one to nitpick, but when talking about footwork, it seems as if every game Drew Brees is having to throw a jump pass.  He literally leaves his feet in order to heave the ball over the outstretched arms of the line, given his short stature.

I'm not selling Brees short on his abilities as a passer, not at all, but I don't think you can put Cam and Brees in the same conversation about how they play from within the pocket.  The physical differences are too great.

Yep, that's the way Brees makes up for his lack of height. He literally can not see over most NFL players, definitely not over lineman. Which is why it will be so darn important that the defense plays disciplined football and stays in their gaps and gets off blocks. Before the MNF they showed clips of Wilson & Brees with their throwing motions. Wilson gets on his tip toes. Brees jumps/hops.

First and second seasons: "Carolina won't get anywhere! They don't have a defense and they can't run the ball, the two ingredients for a championship team! Who cares if you can throw for 5000 yards, if you can't stop the run and control the clock!"

This season: "Carolina won't get anywhere! They ONLY have a good defense and rely too much on controlling the clock! They need to pass more! That's the ingredient for a championship team!"

I still think this is a small vs. large market issue. These "analysts" know that by attacking the Panthers they can please large market fans from NO, ATL, and even NE, now that we've embarassed them. It's all about shock and sales.

The only way we can win this battle is by winning ALOT for a significant period of time.

I don't think we'll have trouble with that.

The guys that are attacking us now will be fighting each other to carry Cam's jock in two years.

Article was actually pretty spot on.  Just think if Cam played like the writer wrote he would be the best of all times.  Cam still only has played in the NFL 3 years.  This offseason he will need to take the next step and work on his footing and love of god Cam do Trash can drills.

As soon as writers start crediting Cam's success to his "physical attributes"....as soon as writers keep trying to add to that played out stereotypical view of certain QB's, I stop reading and hope they get raped by a bear. Cam is in year 3......Brees was getting literally poo on in his year 3. The writers argument is invalid. I bombed his twitter with hate mail too. fug this guy.

Lololol

Raped by a bear, isn't that how we all wanna go?
