  1. To add, as I got a bit distracted.  One of my closest friends in the world and I had this discussion at the last game we attended together.

We were talking about winning and what was going on with the Panthers.  I said that I wanted Marty run out of town on rails, and she was aghast.  "He's drafted all of my favorite players" was her rationale.

I asked her if she would rather win, or have her favorite players on the roster.....she wanted the players more than the W.

Very strange to me, but whatever.

Best is Hurney, 2nd is Gettleman, 3rd is Fitterer. Hurney drafted most of the panthers legends of the last 20 years.

Not you specifically, yours was just the first one to make me want to respond.

I don't know if this is a Panthers thing, or not, but this weird obsession with "drafting star players" and absolutely caring more about the players than winning seasons is very strange to me.

Marty gave us a BUNCH of names to cheer on, and a BUNCH of losing seasons.  I'd rather not know a single player on the roster and win, than have TD, Luke, Olsen, Cam, CMC, Norman, Smith and Peppers out there losing season after season.

I think that somehow in America, we've lost the ability to be around each other in public anymore. Add in alcohol and a competitive atmosphere, one often tinged with heavy doses of disappointment and frustration and you've got a recipe for conflict.

    It just ain't worth it.

Eh....Don't think so...at least not in reality.  What we recall isn't as rosy as we think it was.

We are MUCH more civil than any time in our history.

That said, SPORT does take the place (to a certain extent) of our desperate love of combat.  Unfortunately, men need to fight/compete/prove, not all, but many, until their mid to late 20's.

Instead of beating everyone over the head and dragging women around by the hair, we just box, play football, practice martial arts, throw discus, play basketball, etc...it somewhat takes the place of that weird internal desire.

Some need to fight more than others, many of them are "die hard" fans.

Football is my No.1 sport, hands down, bar none.

You couldn't pay me to go sit in the stands at another football game. Drunk, annoying, belligerent fans, overpriced drinks and a shitty view of the field. I've literally never been to an NFL football game where I didn't see a drunken fist fight. And most of those were in the pre-season.

I'll go to a baseball game, but unless I get an invite to a suite, I feel like I'm missing out on nothing by watching a football game at home on in a bar.

I really enjoy college football in person, and NFL on television, with the game paused, so I don't have to listen to droning announcers, commercials, or terrible re-plays.

Can get through a Panthers game in about an hour that way.

Past 5 I will give you but past 10 includes years we had way more talent and went to the Super Bowl. I would trade this team in a second for the 2013 team even with the next couple off seasons/drafts in a second if we could swap coaches.

Never ever felt overly confident in any team led by Ron, nor put together by Hurney.

  6. There has been a lot of bad, and quite a bit of good...IMO.

Mixing control with Tepper and Rhule was a mess, but with Tepper and Rhule, it was always going to be so...so I'm going to go with OK in his first 2 years.  He was HAMSTRUNG, but also seemed to make plenty of bad calls on his own....I think.

That said, I do like the trajectory of this team, and front office currently.

I like Samir, Dan, and Fitts as a team....getting a better feel for this FO every year.

I like our current coaching staffs, and I like the fact that he helped convince Tepper to overspend on the staff, overspend on getting some QC guys in place (Dom and Jim), and I like that we have cornerstone pieces on our defensive and offensive lines to build on.

Overall, the players have been a mixed bag, the contracts haven't been back breaking, but the direction that we are headed looks brighter than the past 10 years.

I'm keeping the guy a while longer to see how this plays out.

  7. I've been noticing this for a while.  It's why QB's like Young can actually make a good living, and not die in the process.

You don't have to be 6'5" 240 any longer, you just have to be able to get the ball out on time, and accurately.  Smith with the Eagles wouldn't last 5 games 10 years ago...now, he can thrive.

Watching in person was tougher to tell but I also thought Ickey looked way better than he did in the preseason, more like he looked last year. OL was mostly very solid, the issue was playcalling, wideouts not getting open, rookie QB and becoming predictable playing from behind (and with bad field position for various reasons *refs*)

Icky played well...IMO, but the entire line did for the most part.

Very happy for ZV to shine, dude didn't even get an invite to the Combine IIRC.

Aaron and Mahomes have big arms too. Mahomes and Allen are usually cited as the top 2.

They look different to me.  They have wild releases, and multiple platforms where they can still push the ball even when "off" a bit.  Not many have that ability.

However, I don't think they have the type of velocity as a Russell, Cam, Stafford, Marino, Vick, Elway, etc....has/had.  Just my opinion.

If you will notice, PM and AR both drop their balls in, even far down field, not many of those "frozen rope" throws the other guys can make.

I prefer placement over velocity, I'm just saying that "arm strength" isn't the end all be all, and never has been.

He doesn’t have a top half of the NFL arm strength type of arm. That’s not needed to win. It helps but it’s not the be all end all. Arm strength can cover up bad reads if used right. If Young makes better reads then it’s a non factor.

These things will get ironed out.

The list of QB's with massive arms that won tons of playoff games or SB's isn't what you'd think it would be.  Trying to think of the last few "cannons" that were drafted.

Cam, Russell, Cutler, Stafford, Allen, there are tons...big arm doesn't mean squat if you don't know what to do with it, or how to control it.

I don't think that Mahommes has that type of arm, he has an AA Ron arm.

  11. Rookie QB.

    New Head Coach.

    Season Opener.

    On the road.

    Vs. a division opponent.

I am satisfied with what I saw from BY yesterday.  Not thrilled, but I knew I wouldn't be.  He needs more reps, and we need more speed and sudden-ness.  On a few throws, the WR's were at fault for not doing their part...but BY was a half a second slow yesterday.

Speaking of WR's, we need some help, pretty badly.

  12. In the past 20 years, we've had 5 winning seasons.

The answer is no, not nearly as passionate.  I've never let games bother me, except for the SB losses and Jakes implosion in 08 in the NFCC game.

The NFL has gotten worse, the Panthers are trying to beat them to the bottom.

Jerry was bad, Tepper has been flat out awful.  I refuse to spend a single penny on this team.  I did watch every offensive snap yesterday, and most of the defensive ones, fast forward through the rest.  Can get through a Panthers game in about 30 minutes that way so I don't waste my Sundays watching a crap product.
