I think it’s Rhule just really sticking to his guys from last year and making the new guys come in and prove themselves, regardless of if they are rookies or five year vets. It would have been nice to know how Christensen did at LG. Hopefully he does well and we can trot out Ekwonu - Christensen - Bozeman - Corbett - Moton

https://www.panthers.com/news/camp-observations-baker-mayfield-makes-his-debut Taylor’s INT is in the link above, nice pick, have seen many a Panthers DB get Nakamura’d in that same situation. Also of interesting note, Elflein took first team reps at center over Bozeman, it was already mentioned that Jordan took first team reps at LG. So the first team offensive line was… Christensen - Jordan - Elflein - ? - Moton
-
Damn… look at that… Baker gets to run with the first team tomorrow. All the chicken little’s can sleep tight knowing this. “Mayfield took all of his work with the second offense Wednesday, with incumbent Sam Darnold working with the ones. Head coach Matt Rhule said that would flip Thursday, with Mayfield getting to practice with the first set of receivers.”

I want to see Darnold do this just one time.

Was not just you, seemed like day 15 not day 1.

That’s fine but don’t waste your assets on the bench and let them walk for nothing when the time comes. Gary Payton is just as good of a player as Martin and probably the closest comparison that there is to Martin in the NBA and Golden State will be replacing him with Moody next year. Moody was selected two spots after Bouknight. Point being you eventually have to let the guys you draft try. If you don’t then it’s a revolving door of young players that you lose for nothing.

Already responded to this… entitlement has nothing to do with his status and everything with how he presents himself. The moxie that he had as a walk-on turned into straight up entitlement when he started to make a name for himself. The guy let fame get to him real quick and in reality the trade to the Panthers probably saved his football career because it certainly knocked him down a few rungs. Rhule is making him earn his keep and he looks like he’s working really hard. At the end of the day I’m fine with him being who he is but doing it for your team and you, don’t do it at the expense of tearing down someone else. The flag plant, the midfield scuffle with Baylor, and just his overall reaction to the Browns situation we’re childish. Hopefully he’s on the right track now that everything seems to be behind him and he’s got a fresh start. It’s still critical that the Panthers make him earn his keep though.

Are you serious? It has nothing to do with him being a walk-on or what his ranking out of of HS was. Every day people can be prideful and entitled… hell, your garbage man can be entitled. It has absolutely nothing to do with is social status or athletic status and everything to do with his persona. Planting the flag against Ohio State, getting into it with Baylor at midfield, etc… not to mention the woe is me act after the Browns acquired Watson… notice Darnold didn’t act the same way when the Panthers acquired Mayfield. Entitlement has nothing to do with status, thinking so is asinine. There’s examples of Karen’s all over the internet acting entitled at Starbucks and they are probably your local banker… it doesn’t stop them from being entitled.

Rightfully so, you bring grass in to get Chelsea in here knowing good and well that they won’t play on turf because it’s a protection issue and then immediately go back to turf once Chelsea leaves… seems like our owner cares more about a football team across the pond than the football team and his players in his own back yard.

Between this thread and the one about Rhule stating that the players will decide the QB completion based off of their play… we might need to start requiring posters to include a bibliography at the end of their post. Context and full quotes are key, along with basic reading comprehension.

That makes more sense, thanks!

Trading them for second round picks and then keeping those second round players over the lottery picks that we do have seems to be the game plan. I just don’t understand the whole Martin contract… give Bouknight a chance to develop and if he doesn’t then draft another defensive two guard next year to replace him and move him out for some sort of compensation. The Hornets asset managing is astounding.
-
It would make more sense if it was after a practice but random general soreness seems a bit concerning.
-
That’s valid, New England did protect him really well with the plan they had in place. I could actually see Corral succeeding in that same type of plan but Rhule knows he has to win this year and while Corral could give him a chance to win he probably feels more comfortable with Mayfield right now. However, come next week, if Corral comes in and is lighting it up then things could change.
-
If you think playing football in HS and the NFL are similar then there’s no reason to even have a conversation.
-
Zach wasn’t ready to play… it showed week one against us… hopefully the Jets didn’t ruin him like they ruined Darnold. Mac was ready and also came from a more pro ready offense. It’s going to take a while for Corral to get up to speed. Our offense and verbiage is miles ahead of what he was doing at Ole Miss. It’s great that Corral has that mindset, he still has to earn it. I said in a post earlier that Wilson made the Seahawks move on from Flynn but they didn’t do so until the end of camp. Corral wasn’t going to come in and be the guy on day one. There’s a hierarchy I place and Corral has to climb it. In a week or so he’ll probably have jumped Walker and then we can all sit back and laugh at the sky is falling chicken little a in here.

Fugging foot injuries, I wouldn’t even risk it with him. Tell him to study the playbook, and we’ll try again in late August.

If you put Darnold as third on the depth chart on day one then you’ve lost the team. The only guy to say it is Robbie but if you start assigning players spots without making them earn it then the team effectively realizes that there isn’t a point in competing because the coaching staff has made their mind up on day one. Have you played or coached any sort of organized sport? It doesn’t even have to be at the college level, HS level is fine… The older veteran players usually get the early reps and things start to shake out as camp progresses… there may be a few elite talents that shoot up the depth chart right away but not on the first day. It took all of camp before Russell Wilson stole Matt Flynn’s job, the Panthers aren't just going to magically give Baker the QB1 spot and Corral the QB2 spot on day one. If anything our fanbase needs to be ecstatic with the way Darnold is starting, the more positive news out of camp for him and the better he plays in preseason, the easier it is to move him once Mayfield wins the job.

This is a little odd… would have thought they’d have tried Ickey at first team LG, I can’t imagine sitting him for someone like Jordan if Christensen were to win the starting LT job.
-
Some guys that the Panthers really need to step up this year (Wilson, Tremble, Thomas, Taylor, and Burris) seemed to make some plays today… hopefully that continues.
-
You can’t just not give Darnold reps… they’ll start to skew one way or another as camp goes on but it’s day one man… In coach speak, our QB competition is open and the coaching staff needs to make it appear that way until Mayfield steps up… otherwise Rhule will lose the locker room on day one if he’s going to hand out starting jobs today.
-
Looks like Darnold is slinging, also nice to see the TE’s involved early which McAdoo will certainly like. McAdoo’s TE’s usually feast in the red zone.

Did CMC just truck Igo?

In actuality he’s making Mayfield earn his keep which is the right thing to do to someone who has been considered entitled during the entirety of his football career.
