Are you the one that wants to draft a second round safety at 8?

    Probably only wants a Gamecock..

I’d be cool with Mason Graham, Abdul Carter, Tet McMillan, and maybe a couple other guys. That has no bearing on the fact that I think Walker is this years guy who gets overhyped because of potential.  Happens every single year.

Agreed. Shrewd signings need to happen, as well as drafting well.

I am just saying we can't keep shelling out top 5 and 10 contracts every offseason or this period of misery is going go continue far longer.

Agree with shrewd being key. And don’t disagree with the rest. But counterpoint…

if we drafted Hunt, Lewis, Williams, etc would it be an issue giving out these contracts to retain them?

Sounds right. That's the difference between professional sports fans and college fans. Once you aren't on the team, pro sports fans move on. College sports fans care zero about pro football except being homers for their typically underwhelming players.

You can absolutely be both. I love the Panthers and have followed them for as long as I can remember. I also love the Gamecocks and keep tabs on former players. And, fwiw, I don’t think it’s any different than the mass of people who play fantasy football and have a favorite team. You want the players on your fantasy team to do well but still have your pro team as the priority.

Anyways, we’ve strayed wayyyy off topic. I would be all for Nick E even with pick 8. I want a stud no matter what position.

It isn't gate keeping. Most of SC is either ambivalent or openly hostile to the Panthers for reasons I cannot fathom.

I remember being in a packed sports bar in Columbia and not being able to watch the Panthers game because all the "fans" wanted to see some 28th string Cleveland QB make his first NFL start.

There are almost no pro sports fans in SC at all. They care only about college football.

Connor Shaw is one of the most beloved players in Gamecock history. Of course they would want to watch him (assuming that’s who you’re referring to).

I have lived and worked all over SC. The level of support is fuging pathetic.

I have encountered far more rooting against the Panthers than for them.

Hence, I have never considered it SC's team. It is definitively a NC team.

To be fair, NC people have this weird hatred for all things SC and try to gate keep the team.

He might not go that high bc he quit on his team at halftime. That was him, right?

I also love him as a prospect. Wish we could have landed him with our 2nd round pick, but that’s probably out the window now.

He definitely pissed a lot of people off with that. I’m still pissed as a Gamecock fan with how it was handled. At the same time…

    1) He played the first half in a game that is essentially meaningless when most guys like him don’t play at all.

    2) Sitting out bowl games has no correlation to how they act in the pros.

    3) I would take his body of work and leadership for every practice and game up until that point over his last half where he made a pretty dumb decision on how to handle the situation.

Trading down would make more sense for a guy like him. Get more ammo in the 2nd or 3rd.

Like the prospect, for sure, but top 10 is tough. High price to pay for a safety. He would have to be a generational player to justify that.

I agree with you but also think some team is going to draft him very high. Also, I do think he is generational.

  8. I’ve been holding out on this because I knew I would just be called a homer. I’m sure some will still say I am and that we shouldn’t care about the underwear Olympics without seeing the tape. That being said….

this guy is an absolute freak. 6’3 220, 43” vertical, and 4.38 unofficial 40. And I can tell you I am not surprised in the slightest by following him since he was an under recruited high schooler putting up 232 tackles, 4 sacks, and 8 forced fumbles his senior year of high school (ONE YEAR!). He developed into the leader on the defense and was always the one making clutch plays.

He is going to be the Luke Kuechly for a defense at safety for a decade. I expect some team will draft him top 15, maybe even top 10. I go back and forth on whether you use a top 10 pick on a safety but at the end of the day, I think you pick a superstar no matter what position. I would prefer us get a top pass rusher or maybe even WR but I would be thrilled to land Nick E if we don’t get one of those guys. Would much rather have him over a guy like Jaylon Walker who is super intriguing but doesn’t have the production to back it up.

  9. Hate losing Necas but he was going to be moved at some point between now and the trade deadline next year. And always good to get the best player in a deal. Keep in mind that Mikko and Sebastian Aho are pretty close so may help us to retain the big guy. Now we need to figure out 2C and G if possible.
I could very well see us flipping a 1st round pick plus a couple prospects to shore these up.

Would rather have Deone Walker but he is a guy I wouldn't be opposed to getting later in the draft

Walker as a second round pick would be great. But only if we stay as 3-4.
