  1. The offense was Reich’s baby. @CRAwas right in our debate. Reich designed it and called the plays until he saw how bad it was. The plays were dull and boring with little PA, or pre snap motion and the OL was playing in a scheme that they weren’t suited to run. I’m not sure you can blame an OC that wasn’t calling plays at the beginning of the year on that. Don’t get me wrong, Brown didn’t look any better calling plays, but I think that is because he never called them before and it was Reich’s offense.
  2. Same page matters when you are trying to build a solid staff to develop a rookie QB. Sure Stroud was the better choice, but Young was far from the only issue with our offense. In fact I'm not sure what was right with the offense from the play calling, protection, and weapons it was all a disaster. I'm just reading what the players commented about last season and Young. It appears the staff was definitely an issue... AT "Yeah, well, I'll say this: I mean, I think everything was stacked against him last year, unfortunately," Thielen said. "And I'm not gonna get into detail as to why that was, but I'm just really excited for him to have a fresh start, an ability to have a good coaching staff that's gonna put a good plan together to help him be successful, and also to put people around him to help him be successful." Hurst "I think it was apparent, if you were in this locker room, you could tell -- just a lot of voices," Hurst told the Charlotte Observer this week. "A lot of people trying to, I guess, right the ship. And I think it just got to the point where there were just too many voices." These are both older veteran offensive players who have played with several QBs and offenses.
  3. Brown and Evero where flashy names that worked under McVay. I think Evero worked because Reich never really has anything to do with defense. He let Evero hire his own staff and run the defense without interference. I'm also not sure McCown ever worked with Reich before. Most GMs let their HC pick his own staff and if you hired the right person you should. I think we were trying too hard to make sure Bryce had the best group of people around him but instead he was pulled in several different ways and probably overloaded. I also don't like how we still have Caldwell on this staff. He would have been one that probably approved of the Reich hiring. Let Canales have his own advisors/staff without any other people overseeing it or "consulting."
  4. I'm sure that was the idea behind it. To get the best people possible. It just didn't work because you had too many different ideas on how things should be ran. You need to let the HC hire his people so that everyone is on the same page. To his credit Tepper seems to be adapting. Reich was a completely different approach than Rhule. Now we have another approach through the help out of outside agency. If he keeps adapting and trying different approaches he is bound to eventually get it right. I also give him credit for cutting his losses on Rhule and Reich when it was clear they weren't the answer. That was millions of his dollars he was throwing away for a chance to get better.
  5. "That’s what made Panthers owner David Tepper and GM Scott Fitterer’s directive this past winter to new head coach Frank Reich worth discussing. They told Reich not to hire people he knew. They wanted the best coaches, not coaches who Reich could personally vouch for. That’s a massive difference." https://www.si.com/nfl/2023/03/22/panthers-coach-frank-reich-hiring-assistants-david-tepper He was told not to hire people he was familiar with. The same thing the Giants did with Dabboll and looked how it turned out... Hire the right HC and let him decide who he wants on his staff. Then it's easier to hold him accountable IMO. We had a group of individuals with all different philosophies that went behind each others backs. Like I said the good news is he let DC pick his guys this time.
  6. This is also not breaking news. Reich said they had weekly meetings and Tepper wanted him to use more RPO like Bryce did in college. There was something about him writing a play design on a a piece of paper and asking them to run it.
  7. I agree with part of this. However, with all of his faults, I don't think Reich is the one who put his staff together. I think they were sort of forced on him from what I've read. Regardless Reich wasn't the guy and it looks like Canales is bringing in his guys this year. So hopefully that's a lesson learned....
  8. Yeah swapping picks is rewarding another team. Just take away their pick like they did with the Dolphins the other year.
  9. They should be forced to send Bijan and Pitts to the last place team in their division. Whoever that was…
  10. Riley Leonard at Notre Dame now is an interesting one to watch also. I’d also take half of those over 24 year old Nix who sucked until he transferred out west in a wide open Oregon offense in a division where they play no defense.
  11. If we could magically walk away with Ladd, JPJ, and a 2nd next year I would be all for it. I doubt those players will be available at those picks though....
  12. Is Robinson NT or DE for us? He is a great run stuffer too. I kind of want him at NT and Tuttle over to DE. Tuttle is undersized for NT. Throw in Wonnum and Clowney on the edge and our run defense SHOULD look better.
  13. I wasn't for it. I thought he played "meh" at Oregon based on expectations. I was wrong, but I still think he is slightly overrated.
  14. Yeah something like that could work. I bet he wants more than $15 mill for one year. Especially with the cap going up. Maybe if he is still doing great in our new scheme we look at extending him next year? I still think it’s a possibility this year but only if we need it. If some player becomes available we really want maybe we look at his contract then?
  15. I mean if you extend him, he will still want his money from his contract plus more to play more years IMO. I’m ok with just taking it in the chin this year if we have to.
  16. I hope someone like Penix is still there and it’s a small bidding war for him.
  17. A few little clips from the first couple days.
  18. It was never high end but they are saying it’s average now, which seems more accurate. I think it’s probably below the average QB but it also gets overblown on here. Somewhere between the average fan and the Huddle sounds right.
  19. I think most teams want a good running game. It’s safe time controlling offense than can wear down a defense. Wanting a strong running game doesn’t mean you don’t like or trust your QB. Ravens, Niners, Lions, Dolphins (3 of which were in the conference finals) all averaged over 130 per game which was towards the top. He paid out for 2 solid OGs. He wants to develop that pocket and keep the defense off balance. It’s also a good way to develop your young QB and get him comfortable before opening up the offense. Who knows it Canales will achieve this goal, but it does look to be a goal he is working on.
  20. Yeah I believe the 2nd half of the season it was much better. He stayed committed to it and it paid off.
  21. To go from the worst roster/team in the league to 6-11 in one offseason is solid to me. 2 wins to 6 would be tracking better than Dan Campbell's quick turn around for the Lions. 6 wins to me means we are looking at possibly a winning season the next year or a playoff push. If we are doing that in 2025 then Canales is legit.
