Completely disagree (which is ok) that Tepper sold Young to the org. Fitt loved him for years and it has been reported over and over that the whole org was sold on him. But I agree that Tepper was probably ecstatic that his preferred face of the franchise was the same player pushed by the GM and coach.

That could be and probably was, but even so I'm sure it was an easy sell to the teppers.

I'm not sold that Reich was sold on BY, maybe he was, but considering the majority of work he had done with QBs was older established vets I'm not sure he knew much about how to develop a QB or what to look for.

Really not a great fit for what we were trying to do on many levels.

I think Canales is much better suited for developing QBs or really any position. Considering his early passion/focus was trying to get a training center going, it wouldn't surprise me to see early mini-camps taking that kind of direction. Have everyone work on shoring up fundamentals.

#33 - trade back and draft a WR (Worthy, Legette, Mitchell) ; acquire additional picks.

3rd - Cedric Gray or Jeremiah Trotter. Gray may already be gone.

I've been targeting those two in the third and coming back around 2-3 rounds later and picking up Tommie Eichenberg. Hopefully through trading back we can add a couple picks to make this more feasible. Adding that to Luvu and Shaq (if he's still here) would be fun to watch.

  3. A couple things I've noticed

If I don't pick a WR first, I typically end up regretting it. I never feel good about the way it falls after that. Usually it's Ladd, Adonai, or, on occasion, Brian Thomas Jr is there (and if he is I jump).

I e been going back and forth between going OL or defense with the 2nd pick, but find myself drawn more to defense lately.

Kris Jenkins is often a target there just because I'd love to see Brown with another huge terror on the interior and id also love to see another Kris Jenkins at DT. Seems like destiny.

I find myself more trying to get two LBs who are big-time tackle machines with that alpha dog mentality. I will grab either Cedric Grey or Jeremiah Trotter in the 2nd and then typically Tommie Eichenburg a couple rounds later or some other high tackle dawg complement for whoever gets picked earlier.

I'm just thinking that adding two terror tackling machines to add to Luvu would be great. I figure it would have to be appealing to Morgan as well and Evero probably wouldn't hate having a stacked LB corps managing the middle.

Whatever picks I have left (usually a few from trades) I just get the best OL I can find.

And if Jared Wiley is available I might try to grab him as well.

  4. This one made me laugh.

    Adonai Mitchell @ 6'4

    Johnny Wilson @ 6'6-7

    Jared Wiley @ 6'7

I typically have been having one or two WRs under 6' (mcconkey, corley, thrash, wilson, cowing) and trying to pair them up with a tall target, but this was just too hard to resist.

There might be truth to that but Bryce was clearly ranked above Stroud on the majority big boards. It's revisionist history to suggest the Teppers were out on an island with this. Those who preferred Stroud were mocked on the Huddle

I don't think they were on an island. I think there were a lot of people who bought it. But there are also mega doubts about him as well.

Also, people who preferred bryce were mocked by those who didn't think it was a good choice. It was pretty heavily divided and the ebb flowed back and forth between the two regularly.

I think people loved the idea of Bryce and there was just enough to see that people felt ok with that choice.

Confirmation bias played a role in the decision and people's opinions about both guys, but particularly with Bryce. Those who didn't want a short QB weren't going to hear anything that could possibly change their minds that it might not be the issue that they thought it would be. Many just wanted a big QB. Many wanted Cam...again.

Also, many who loved the idea of Bryce the guy and the super processer and weren't willing to consider anything that might point to the idea that he may not be the best choice. Not the strongest arm. Not a powerhouse. Not a big personality that can help take command. Not a big guy. I mean he really is tiny. That's not an insignificant point to consider.

But people were willing to overlook stuff with Bryce because they liked the idea of him... including me.

I'm not sold on him anymore, but I am hopeful that Canales and his crew can make it work.

I’m still not buying that Bryce was the original consensus. I firmly believe this test screwed Stroud and subsequently screwed us into making potentially the dumbest sequence of trades and draft picks this franchise has ever seen.

I think it was a perfect storm of misconception made by a couple who happened to be the owners of the team. They weren't just looking for the face of the franchise. They were looking for the voice and they were looking/hoping for someone who sounded like they did.

I really think they were looking for someone who wouldn't just win games, but who would win the hearts of the market they were try appeal to who had the money. They were looking to make the typical middle /upper-middle class fan comfortable so, between the two top prospects I think they didn't rely on talent, but marketable personality.

Tepper from the beginning has tried his best to get media attention to the team he bought. Trying to make the biggest splash possible. He didn't want the best team. He wanted the most hyped team. The most marketable team.

Just my opinion and I could be totally wrong, but I think that he and his wife WANTED Bryce to be the best prospect so they believed it and sold everyone else on it...or just flat out pushed it on people who wanted to please the boss and his wife.

Bryce was the well-mannered polite kid you could take to your grandma and who would comment on just how well-spoken and well-mannered he was.

I think the kid has talent and he might still become a good QB. I hope he is. But I really do believe that he fit the personality mold the teppers were wanting for the face/voice of their team.

"People" might just be David Tepper and possibly other Panthers' brass at the time. I mean, Stroud still went #2 overall. It's not like he went tumbling. Listening to Tepper and the Panthers racing about his "super processing" does leave me thinking that the S2 likely played a significant role in our evaluation process though.

Yep. Most important thing to remember when thinking about Tepper is, he's just a dumb football fan (like most of us in here) that bought a team.

We think we know what we're talking about, like we're experts and occasionally one or two of us might get something right and we think that means we know what we're talking about...and that's perfectly ok because we don't own a team.

Tepper is what happens when a fan owns a team.

What do we know about Joe Gilbert?

Gilbert started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Albany back in 1987. He go on to make a number of stops throughout the college ranks—with runs at the University of Pennsylvania, Northeastern University, the University of Maine, Mansfield University, the University of Toledo, the University of Central Florida, the University of Houston and the University of Illinois.

His NFL coaching career kicked off in 2012, as the assistant offensive line coach for the Indianapolis Colts. He’d be promoted to offensive line coach in 2013, but bumped back down to assistant in 2016.

The Arizona Cardinals then came calling in 2018, hiring Gilbert as their offensive line coach and run game coordinator for one season.

He then moved on to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he was the offensive line coach from 2019 to 2023.

    how much is burns wanting?

who would we benefit more from.

i'm not crazy about throwing big money at any one player, but this is probably the only exception i would make.

if the organization is set on bryce being the guy, then we need to make sure that he's got the best chances possible to succeed. if we hadn't traded moore, we'd probably be paying him a couple more a year than that.

  10. this was an interesting one. surprised to see chop robinson there and if we lose burns this might not be a bad opportunity.

i usually try to get a WR early, but the way it was falling i didn't like the values there.

definitely broke me out of some drafting ruts i had gotten into.

Chinn is in essence a bust. We drafted him with noo idea what to do with him and therefore he got little to no playing time. Why was he drafted in the first place? Because he's an athlete with no role in the defense. That my friend is a wasted draft pick and essentially a bust as far as we are concerned.  Move on and let someone figure out what to do with him.

a case of us being fixated on this RAS crap. i'm sure it's important, but if they don't football well, they are worthless.

being athletic means nothing if you don't have anything you do well.

WHAT?  I just noticed Chinn's snap percentage.  Heck, he was in on only a few more defensive snaps than me.  Does he not fit the Evero way?  I think they wanted him to play big nickel--what the hell happened?  Was he injured and I forgot?

Hendership played much more than Chinn

what happened with chinn is a big mystery. i've lost interest in him. let him hit the market because we sure never have known what the hell to do with him.

Open up the vaults for Brian Burns if he hits free agency. That man is a terror. I'd take Burns over Hunter or Allen.

the legend is greater than the reality.

the legend is not worth the price tag.

We need to draft a Chris Jones.

Paying for one now is boneheaded.

    this. right. here.

we're not going to be a playoff bound team this next year. probably not next year either.

    build wisely and frugally.

consider what greg olsen said a couple weeks ago

I don’t think you need to panic and go out and pay $25 million to whoever the top free-agent receiver is just to check that box. I don’t think they’re one player away. I think it’s gonna be roster depth, great drafting, signing the right free agents. And then it’s going to be about coaching and playing to the strengths of the guys you already have under contract. I think you saw Ejiro Evero do that on defense this year. They developed a lot of talent on defense, a lot of guys that weren’t expected to play. And I would argue they played well above expectation. That’s coaching. That’s what the NFL is. You’re not always gonna inherit an amazing roster. You’ve got to make the best of what you have. I think that’s what Dave’s approach will be.

    https://theathletic.com/5238442/2024/01/30/carolina-panthers-greg-olsen-dave-canales-bryce-young/

draft well and pick up not star or elite FAs that you have to pay $20mil/year for. get the decent role players who can help fill out the roster or who can be developed. build from the bottom up.

it's not sexy, but it's smart. we've got limited resources to rebuild this team. should we have to rebuild this team after waiting so long? no, but we have to because tepper hired the wrong people. hopefully he hired the right ones this time around, but until we get the right guys rebuilding this team we're going to be stuck and there isn't a chris jones or any other high $ player is going to fix that. it will only put us in a worse cap situation.

He's clearly made it known he is about money. He is a 2x champion what else does he have to prove?

It's not crazy to say he will go to the highest bidder. Hell for s defensive player we are probably a good destination for him. Evero one of the better DC's in football. He might view himself as a great piece to the this defense. He's also playing with another great Dlineman who will take away some of the double teams.

Jones is absolutely going to the highest bidder. He's made it known no discounts. This his last big contract.

Ok..... here's something to consider. Why the hell would we want to be the highest bidder? I can't think of a bigger mistake...going all in on ANYBODY at this point.

We don't need to be throwing all our money at one or two players under the impression that it will make us competitive next year.

As exciting as it would be to make a big splash, isn't that what we've been trying to do the last few years? And how has it worked out..

We have to use all our resources to rebuild the team. A team isn't made up of one or two big stars . It's made up of a bunch of Joe's who are decent players...not stars, just decent players who can do what they're told.

We don't even have that kind of team. We have do do the boring route. We have to use all our money on bringing in average Joe's who are decent players who can do what they're told.

Throwing all our chips in to get a Chris Jones won't help us build the team.
