Gettleman: Oher can be answer at left tackle

"Michael is a former first-round pick who got his baptism with John Matsko," Gettleman said. "Michael came out of the blocks and played solid. John left after two years, and Andy Moeller was his next position coach, and John had trained Andy. MIchael continued to improve, and in 2012 they won the Super Bowl with him at left tackle. In 2013 they brought in a new O-line coach, and the fit just wasn't good. Then he went to Tennessee and had an injury-plagued year.

"We did our homework on Michael, and we feel very strongly that he can be an answer for us. He'll be inserted at left tackle, and we'll go from there. The other four guys really finished the season strong – (left guard Andrew) Norwell and (center) Ryan (Kalil) and (right guard) Trai (Turner) and (right tackle)

Mike Remmersicon-article-link.gif – and we feel like Michael gives us a chance to really solidify that group."

the backup plan will be to draft a guy in the 4th or 5th round

The draft is certainly the preferred option, maybe the only option this year. What round is anyone's guess as it depends on the value. At least he will go after some UDFA's, right?

    • In reality it will have to happen at some point. Assuming we keep losing, we’ll need to see if Young can turn it around and be the guy. Or Do we need to move on and draft another QB. most fans (myself included) have already formed their opinions. But has the staff came to the same conclusion??
    • All of this. Derrick Brown is arguably the best player on our entire roster. You lose him, your starting OLB, your starting safety, and your secondary is mostly guys you picked up from the waiver wire after the pre-season cut-downs. This defense has almost no opportunity to be good, because it's incomplete.  We should absolutely bulk it up in the off-season, but to look at our defense on paper and say it's light years away is unfair. We didn't even get the opportunity to see Evero's defense on paper. But 100%, 1,000% do not chase QB this year. We have so many holes. The last thing we need is our Sixth different starting QB in as many years. It should have been glaringly obvious around QB #3 or 4 that QB was not the issue and we have huge problems all over. And every swing and a miss on QB is another missed opportunity to address a position of need. Andy is a good-enough QB for a re-building team. And that's exactly what we need right now.
    • when you are still evaluating/rebuilding --- is there a need to be overly creative?
