Panthers PFF Grades - Offense

It's going to be hard to gauge a QB with these ratings all the time.  For instance, a good bit of INTs in the league yearly are ball tips that should have been caught by the WR, I'm assuming those are against the QB?   It's obvious Cam led us to the win but he definitely is inconsistent as a QB and has a few "wtf" moments each game, but the rating does seem a bit much.

The worst thing is Oher's run blocking, and Tolbert, but as long as Cam isn't getting killed by JJ Watt I took that as a victory.   The line would be fantastic if we could run a bit better, but I'm not sure that's all on them, as the play design isn't the best for running under Shula and Cam's rushing always pads our stats when it comes to overall rushing.  But like I said, if Cam isn't getting killed by the d-line it's a win, especially with what we've had the last few seasons.

You want to talk about our WR's eh? Our current #1 WR has 95 yards, that puts him right at 67th in the NFL. Behind 6 running backs.

Now tell me more about how our franchise quarterback is inconsistent.

He should go watch the god QB's game from last night, then come back and talk about inconsistency.

The more I watch other teams play, the happier I am with our team. At this point there are a few teams that are gelling early and seem to be in the highest echelon. I would give ourself a B team rating. If we can continue to get the ugly wins it won't be long before we are firing on all cylinders and could potentially run with the A-teams. I love it when a plan comes together.  (Some of you will get that)

Take out the first few drives and he would probably be positive.

Yeah, we had a very poor 1st quarter on offense.  But once we got going, it was nice, especially the 2nd quarter.  That's where we've been dominating on offense.  Here's the breakdown of our offensive production by quarter for both games:

Also, I noticed we had a LOT more "big plays" on offense both running & passing in the Houston game than against Jacksonville.  It was 10 big plays against Houston (7 rushing / 3 passing) vs. 4 big plays against JAX (3 rushing / 1 passing).  ["Big plays" are defined as 10+ yard rush, 25+ yard pass.]  They were key in creating scoring opportunities.

This week's offensive grades from PFF highlight why their grading system should be taken with a very large grain of salt. One only needs to see Cam Newton with a negative grade to realize they are very subjective and lack context in the grading.

I feel like PFF is the exact opposite.  They are extremely objective and grade the game by what a player does good and bad.  As a casual observer or a fan we can look at Cam's performance and subjectively say "well he carried the whole team on his back and willed the team to victory when it seemed everything else was against him".  But the PFF team isn't interested in that sort of thing.  They simply grade a player on the plays they make or don't make.

I personally think PFF is great at exactly what they do, which is to give a completely unbiased, objective view of what the players do on the field.  Are they always right?  Of course not, but they are one of the most accurate sources for info like this around, feel like we should understand it for what it is.

3 touchdowns (would have been 4 if not for the drop that turned into a pick), 271 total yards, and numerous first down scrambles (he was also our leading rusher) against one of the better defenses in the league.

I don't honestly know what game some of you guys are watching. Without Newton, we would not have won. It's that simple.

For real. Cam is playing the best football we've ever seen from him. He's throwing darts out there and if wasn't for our WR's dropping balls we'd have blown out both Jax and Houston.
