Carolina Panthers will target offense in round one

I think Jeremy(?) eluded to the possibility that we only meet with prospects with whom we have questions about.  If the FO is sold on a guy they more than likely won't bring him in so that they can use that time to answer questions about other prospects.

That's pretty typical for every team in the NFL especially when it comes to visits to the team facilities, but when we've met with or privately worked out every early round pick in the last couple years then logically it would seem that we are using them for more than just that. at the least we would have met with him at the combine or his pro day because no one is using a 1st round pick on a guy they've never even talked to.

so supposing we think DH might get taken by the Seahawks, what would it take for us to move up with the Steelers pick at 25?   I know it's expensive to move up in the first, but we'd only be moving up 5 spots.

Our 3rd round pick would definitely get us to 25, our 4th would be a stretch. Our 1st and 2nd for their 1st and 3rd is another possibility to move up a 5-7 spots.

Yeah something like our 1 and 3 for their 1 and 5 works out pretty close as well.

Technically we already have their 5th for this year. They traded it for Brandon Boykin lol. They don't have a 6th either but I can't remember where that went.

Hunter Henry will definitely not be the pick. Derrick I can definitely see but Hunter is a very below average blocker at this stage and there are other TEs with better athleticism that will be available later. No need to go TE that high.

If we are going to target one of the Henry's, i can see Hunter being the guy.  Gettleman has said many times he worries about replacements in the event of injury.  That's what led him to move up for Funch last year.  The same can absolutely be said for Olsen.  If would not be happy about D.Henry being the pick.  He has a chance to be a good, intimidating player, (or he could bust out like most Alabama RBs) but i feel that there are other prospects who would be of better value in the first if they reach us.  Those include Ryan Kelly (Kalil's replacement next year), Von Bell (Ballhawk who could immediately come in and play at SS), Ogbah or Dodd (both can be solid DE additions to replace CJ next year), William Jackson (we have a big CB hole) or the previously discussed Sua Cravens.  Cravens especially who in addition to Shaq would give the Panthers one of the most diverse defensive units in the league,  with two players who can move around all over the place attacking the QB off the edge, guarding the run, and being excellent in coverage.  I would be thrilled with any of the players i mentioned, including TE Henry, but not a first round RB.

I think Hunter Henry's draft prospects are being inflated quite a bit - possibly a lot - due to the fact that this is an overall terrible TE class.  I don't see anything impressive.  Neither did Olsen when he was at the combine analyzing the TE prospects in this class.

If he's really the next Jason Witten, then by all means I hope we're the team that drafts him, but in reality I don't even think he's close to that.

I'll always be leery of Bama RBs.  They all look like beasts in college running behind dominant OLs, but if the staff and front office think he's Stew's succussor then I'm all for it.  We are a run heavy team and our workhorse back is in the last year of his contract and coming up on that dreaded age of 30.  A future workhorse is definitely a significant need.

But just in case I have not convinced you yet that the Panthers will be going on the offense in round one, take a look at Dave Gettleman's draft pick history...

2013 - Defense

2014 - Offense

2015 - Defense

2016 - Do I see a pattern here.... ?

i mean, g-man said the pick last year was between shaq and dj humphries... i don't think he is making a conscious decision to go back and forth. a neat tidbit but not a philosophy or basis for a prediction imo.

i think g-man goes best value available (no one actually picks BPA). which he did with shaq, who wasn't a need...

The history you speak is chock full of Hurney driving home the importance of BPA, whether in pre draft pressers or as a defense for not taking the players he was "supposed" to take afterwards, and every sheep on this board taking it as a parchment of sacred knowledge  still persists to this day

" but but Hurney=bad and Gettlemagic=good so there's no way he could've actually been doing that because BPA never fails!

You really are a dumbass.  Hurney drafted for need every draft. It was the reason why our drafts failed so often after the first round.

But don't let the facts get in your way.

    • I think you're being short sighted, if you need a wr next year draft one or get one in FA.  I guarantee that if we double dip at wr and one gets 30 targets, 90% of the huddle will call him a bust and want another wideout next year
