Intermittent Fasting

Jackofalltrades

I don't think I could do more than 24 hours. Do you drink more water or chew gum or something to suppress the hunger?

No, just water. It depends on what type of fast you do. An absolute fast is nothing, but it's not recommended. I do just water and some salt. Some people still consume fats, etc. Realky depends on your goal and what works for you.

My goal is rapid weight loss so I'm being strict and I'm trying to achieve autophagy.

I do it. Typically do a 36 hour fast followed by 36 hours of eating. 3 day cycle.  Really cuts the weight. Add in Keto and its pretty insane

saying its "starving" is completly ignorant. You dont starve until your body doesnt have any fat to use and you break down vital body tissues

wana lose weight? Stop pitting food in your mouth. That simple. Obviously dont go too far with it.

Serious health and spiritual benifits of fasting

Exactly. Perfectly safe and natural. It's also common sense.

Fasting is any time you're not eating. I suggest people start with 12 eating windows while going Keto. Then 18:6, then progress from there.

Have you read either of Dr. Jason Fung's books? They're awesome. Easy reading where he uses every kind of data in addition to common sense to explain why both low carb and IF work.

I follow a fitness guru that is big on this. to each his own, but I can't go that long without eating.

all you have to do is eat the right macros 6 times a day, workout 5 days a week, and drink a bunch of water.

I went from 285-185 in a little over a year.

I think you'd do even better eating twice a day rather thank 6 times simply due to insulin secretion.

Awesome job job on the weight loss. I'm down 130 pounds with diet only.

I would have zero energy for the gym if my fasting was that extreme. I'd worry about my body going catabolic on me and losing muscle. But if you aren't exercising and don't care about losing muscle then I guess it's okay. I think we have different views on intermittent fasting. I believe you have to eat AT LEAST once a day.

The human body works best on a schedule. Adding chaos into it is not good for you, no matter what results you think you're getting mentally. If it's all about losing weight, maybe you shouldn't have to resort to fasting to achieve loss. If it's about so-called mental advantages, I'd suggest yoga, meditation, etc. The human body was not designed to fast.

Pretty sure fasting slows down your metabolism so you might be doing more work for less reward than if you ate smaller meals and exercised regularly.

I think people that do this are looking for alternatives to exercise and eating right, I've previously lost 105 lbs at one point. want to know how I did it? cut carbs, and exercised 5x a week doing mostly cardio, it takes only 1- 1 1/2 hours a day to exercise and for food you just have to show some control and watch what you eat.

it's nothing that hasn't been out there forever, you just have to be willing to put in the effort and a lot of people just look for the easy/new shiney way to do things.

I'm right now in the middle of trying to lose some wieght again after having to take 4 months off of exercise on any kind due to 2 surgeries, and I've already lost 10 lbs in the last month and a half with regular exercise and moderate dieting. I'm also only trying to lose another 15 lbs between now and august 1st. so I'm well on my way to getting there.

who knows, everyone's body and chemistry is different - but I'm sure I would see results.

130 pounds is a lot, congrats to you as well. losing it without all of that running I did would've been nice. it's created a nice gym habit now though and now I'm working on my strength and muscle mass.

I'm afraid to run at this point. I'm having both knees replaced on June 5th. I haven't run in about a decade because of my back and knees...and then my weight which just exacerbated everything. My personal goal is to run around the bases with my son next baseball season.

It doesn't, it actually speeds it up. Another myth is that you lose muscle, you don't. People eating smaller meals is part of the problem. Calories in v Calories out (CICO) is a myth as well.

It was quite the opposite for me, I had far more energy and my workouts have exceeded my expectations. You don't lose muscle fasting until you hit around the 3% body fat mark. You don't have to eat at all. I ended up going 75 hours and felt great. Again, world record fast was 382 days, we don't need to eat every day.

If you're interested in more look up Dr. Jason Fung on YouTube or read his book The Obesity Code.

Our body stores up fat for when times get tough. You burn it when you fast for sure. Having enough fat to last a year is a very new phenomenon evolutionary speaking. Humans now have that luxury.

However, as primates (frujivores in particular), our anatomy is made to eat mainly plants. At least 90%. Our bodies get into problems the more processed foods and animal based foods we eat. Fat builds up, and sure fasting would be a way to deplete it quickly.

Why do you think humans are a cholesterol storing machine while Lions for example don't store it. Because we went for hundreds of thousands of years not having much in our diet. Now we have all we want, and we also have all the cardiovascular disease to go with it.

All of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom forage on plants all day long. \They don't get obese. They don't get heart disease. They don't get cancer.

Also, CICO is definitely not a myth. Anyone that says that is looking to sell people who are fed up with eating less a few books. Any doctor or nutritionist that says that I would stop listening to instantly. Zero credibility.

In short, look at the natural state of our closest relatives. Do what they do if you are actually interested in what our bodies are designed for through evolution.

This is pretty hilarious...

Dr. Fung: Obesity is often considered a problem of excessive calories. This caloric obsession has been indoctrinated into all of us since we were children. Too many calories in, too few calories out, or some combination is what we believe leads to weight gain and obesity. If it were indeed true that excess calories leads to weight gain, then the solution is simple: Reduce calories eaten. This has formed the standard dietary advice of the last 50 years. And it has failed spectacularly. Obesity rates have skyrocketed upward despite continual exhortations to cut calories. So, the proof is in the pudding. This advice does not work

Yes, it is a simple solution.

The ONLY time that advice does not work is when people just don't do it. This guy is selling books to people who want to believe they can eat all they want and still lose weight. Sad.
