Video games are dead *rant*

Man, that's disappointing to hear that the ending is simply repetitive grinding.  I'll wait on picking up for cheap later.  I really loved the first game.  The game play was so much fun.  I would sometimes just go and workout frustrations on orcs.  Was a blast.

That's why you shouldn't support games like this. Also, the best thing anyone can do for gaming is stop buying EA titles.

As much as I love the new direction in Madden (Frostbite/new gameplay) I'm exhausted with the money aspect of Ultimate Team. I thought last year EA found a decent balance but this year its pretty heavy on the money aspect and soured.

I'm a big fan of the Ultimate Team concept but money conquers all these days.

Yup really enjoyed the first one.. such a shame that greed had to ruin the second game.. ugh.

For years they have been complaining about how games should be more than $60.   I guess they may have a point considering SNES games were $50 if I remember.     Though even if they were $80 they would still milk it.

Yup. The Nintendo and Sega Genesis games I remember buying as a kid 25 years ago were $50 or more (Sega ones often over $60). In terms of sticker price there hasn't been any inflation whatsoever, but they've diversified through special editions and the like.

It seems like there's a massive backlash for the micro transactions in this game, so maybe that will make a difference in the future.

The Witcher 3 developers made it clear they were not about that model, even including a little note in the game case stating that your $60 should entitle you to a full game and then some.

micro-transactions and the whole free-to-play model are the worst things to ever happen to the gaming industry. it's the reason why 99.9% of mobile games are complete garbage (coming from someone that develops mobile apps)

Yup.. all the idiots screaming that it's just microtransactions you don't have to buy any just ignore them.. well guess what?? devs now pushing lootcrates which is even worse.. so should we keep on ignoring it you dumb gaming peasants.

they have the same loot box micro-transaction pay-to-win crap in the upcoming star wars battlefront 2 game. i avoid mobile games like the plague because of this crap but now it looks like it's infecting AAA $60 console/PC games too. i'm worried that this will become the industry standard and it will be in basically every new release. as long as people keep spending money this way (and believe me, they are) devs will keep pushing it.

good breakdown

Sadly, OP is 100% spot on.  Excuse my following rant, but I needed a place to unload it, lol...

We are venturing into uncharted territory, and I think it is make or break time for people who believe the content they play should be accessed with their initial purchase, not non-stop microtransactions.

I've shallowed myself out over the last decade or so and slowly whittled down the titles I play to just sports and shooters, but almost exclusively Madden, 2K, COD, and Battlefields.  That list got even smaller with the last few installments of both COD and BF - The jetpack/wallrunning bullshit with laser guns just got to be more bullshit than I could stand, and then BF went the opposite way with Battlefield 1 and stripped everything down to WW1 weaponry and the game itself sucked and the lack of refined weaponry made it worse.  If the gameplay had been fun, the weapons would've been an afterthought, but it played like an arcade WW1 shooter.  They abandoned their old structure of unlockable attachments and daily battlepacks, and the gameplay itself felt like Starwars Battlefront set in 1915, lol.

All that being said...  it just left me with Madden and 2k.  I used to only play H2H on Madden and I was top 200 back in 09 and 10, and that was with hardly playing it.  But, I got into Ultimate Team 3 years ago, and it was a horrible mistake.  This may be my last year of Madden until they change poo up.  I only play it because I love the sport and it is the only virtual outlet we have (yay exclusive rights allowing for monopolies!).  But, it's getting to where that isn't even worth putting up with EA's bullshit.  If you asked me 10 years ago what I thought about someone spending $5 in a game they already own to get "more game" so to speak, I would tell you that person was retarded and they need to sell that game.  And here we are, where now, $5 isn't an option, it has become the standard microtransaction expected to be spent for the average gamer in Madden, per week, at a minimum.  Ultimate Team was still tolerable the last 2 years because they still rewarded grinders who didn't spend money with great players, allowing them to compete with guys who did spend money...  But, this year, they actually put out a set of solos that required you to pay $5 to complete them in their entirety.  They also have now made it to where you can't resell the majority of your cards on their auction house, so you can't generate in-game currency, and thus, have to buy packs ranging from $5 to $100 per pop.  So, I've reached my limit with this.

Again, 10 years ago, I would've laughed at any idiot that spent additional money to play a game they own...  but, slowly, and subtly, developers perfected the craft and insidiously brainwashed their customer base into accepting that as normal.  And now, we're at a point, that some games will just be for spenders and those who won't spend will not play the game.  Map packs for games like COD and BF, I understood, because that was basically like getting an entirely new game, and it was only done every few months.  But, with sports titles, there is absolutely no excuse.

2K is heading in the same direction...   The greed is unreal, and I'm just about done with EA.

There's a lot of indy games on Steam that don't do this.   People should gravitate there.

Steam has some incredible games and many of them slowly making their way to consoles. I still think Stardew Valley is a Top 5 game of all-time.

Payday 2 is a great example of how micro-transactions can change the tone of your game from incredibly fun cult classic to micro-transaction infested garbage.

I was worried Forza 7 was headed that route but it seems that the loot crate mechanic (thus far) is only related to in-game currency.
