Fug. I preordered Battlefront like 5 months ago or whenever you could. Guess the joke is on me. I have the Beta but have only played it once. Haven't had the time. I don't mind a grind away, ignore loot crates type of game on my phone. But when I sit down to play on my tv, I want a real game.

Yeah if you want weapons with the addons to them you will be grinding for a extremely long time.. I saw some reddit post that it would take more than 100 hours to get all weapons with addons for them without paying for loot crates.. that's beyond insane to me.

Yeah did you see where battlefront 2 is making progression only by lootcrate?? how dumb is that?? They made it where if you spend enough money on lootcrates you can get gold level skills that will dominate those who don't spend the money... so basically pay to win.

Battlefront 2 has came out with some changes/news on loot crates though.   The biggest is:

  • And lastly, you have to earn the right to be able to upgrade Star Cards and unlock most Weapons. You can only upgrade or unlock them if you have reached a high enough rank, which is determined by playing the game.

That's pretty huge and important.    You still have to put in the time to level up to use said Star Cards.    I'm torn on the Battlefront 2 thing.   When the first one dropped in 2015, everyone was whining about two things (omg no single player and omg this season pass is so expensive).    EA (and I'm not a huge fan) added a single player to this one AND offered free DLC by way of MTX.    We can't always have our cake and eat it too.    It's obviously $60 is cheap for what games should be nowadays because of inflation.    Also EA's license to make Star Wars has to be super expensive.    There also isn't really a better looking game than SWBF, or very few.     I think if you play the game, you'll be fine, it may be a slight annoyance but should be OK.

Now the Mordor game is different to me.   You bought a single player game where they added a giant grind to FINISH the game at the end, with no warning to anyone.    THAT kind of MTX is way worse than SWBF2 has in mind.    Way worse.

Also, NBA2k17 may have the worst of all these games with how much VC it costs to upgrade your character and do anything (even hair, my god).    I actually have skipped it so far this year, because it WAS a release day purpose (also my annoyance they aren't allowing Amazon to sell physical copies at launch).

Here is the full text or a large portion they released a few days ago:

Crates will include a mix of of Star Cards, Outfits, Emotes or Victory Poses.

Players earn crates by completing challenges and other gameplay milestones, or by purchasing them with in-game credits or Crystals, our premium currency.

If you get a duplicate Star Card in a crate, you will get crafting parts which you can then use to help upgrade the Star Card of your choice.

And lastly, you have to earn the right to be able to upgrade Star Cards and unlock most Weapons. You can only upgrade or unlock them if you have reached a high enough rank, which is determined by playing the game.

- Getting crafting parts for dupes is great as well.

Seems like the beta only added to the confusion about what the system was all about.. all this outrage and speculation could have been avoided if they were clear about it in the first place..

Yeah though I'm not sure these explanations were originally intended until people's opinions/backlash AFTER the beta, which is good, which means EA is listening (something they didn't do much of for BF1).

I'm glad they did. I tried the beta and really liked it but the progression system was f'ed from the get go.

Yeah the game play itself is fantastic. Super fun. I preordered it for the single player mode anyway. So I guess I shouldn't get my panties in a bunch now that I think about it. However, the thought of the model changing is disturbing but I guess is the way going forward. They found a way to monetize playing the game after you bought it. I guess this was inevitable.

Also EA already has the mobile game SW: Galaxy of Heroes. So they're already deep into the SW world. Which is another game I play.

Good news, even better changes to the system.

Here's a rundown of the changes planned for launch, courtesy of EA:

  • Epic Star Cards, the highest tier of Star Cards available at launch, have been removed from Crates. To help keep everyone on a level playing field, these Star Cards will primarily be available through crafting, with the exception of special Epic Star Cards available through pre-order, deluxe, and starter packs.
  • You'll need to reach a certain rank to craft upgraded Star Cards. You won't be able to buy a bunch of Crates, grind everything up into crafting materials, and immediately use them to get super powerful Star Cards. You can only upgrade the ability to craft higher tier Star Cards by ranking up through playing the game.
  • Weapons are locked behind specific milestones. While a select few will be found in Crates, the rest can only be attained by play. Want to unlock a new weapon for your Heavy? Play as a Heavy and you’ll gain access to the class’s new weapons.
  • Class-specific gear and items can be unlocked by playing as them. As you progress through your favorite class, you’ll hit milestones granting you class-specific Crates. These will include a mix of Star Cards and Crafting Parts to benefit your class’s development.

We can blame the gaming industry for games being released before they are ready, for microtransactions, et al. However, at the end of the day, it's a combination of things.

From a consumerism standpoint, we've become obsessed with having the best right now. This applies to everything. Every year, there's a new line of cellphones. Nothing wrong with the old model that has only been released for a year, but here's a new one. Go buy it because we added this feature and that feature. You need it. Buy it. Here's a new model of this shoe. We know we just released the old ones, but they're out of style now. These are the hot thing. Go buy them, go get it now.

This applies to games in the same way. Want to be competitive in online play? Just pay us a little more money, we'll give you this thing right now that you can grind for days on to maybe earn. Better yet, here's a thing that is extremely rare to get on a random drop. Pay us a lot, you'll have it right now and be one of the few to have it. Come on, do it. And certain people will. Want to have the coolest thing? Pay us for it, get it right now.

Then you have a generation now that just wants things. Even when they get the thing they want, it's not perfect (even if it is). There's always something that could be better about it. Look at EVERY game released over the past 4-7 years. You can find an "angry review" on Youtube. Probably several. People ranting about any and everything they dislike, and people loving it. So rather than being patient for a game to be released completely and appreciating a game, faults and all, they nitpick the games. Instead of asking "am I having fun?" they ask "why did they not include this? why did they leave this in the game?"

Then you look at the "I need to win" crowd. You see them everywhere. If they are losing in an argument, they won't concede and consider the argument presented to them. No, they'll either become loud and angry or simply storm off while calling you names. It's either win or bail. If you play ANY sports game online against a human player, you know this to be true. If they're under the age of 25, and they're losing, they're out before the game ends. Damn near guarantee.

Look at movies. Look at books, even. I remember a time only 6 years ago when people were still avid readers of novels. They had the patience and appreciation for the medium. Movies weren't always just go-go-go, action now! types of movies. There were a lot more slowburns. There was more exposition. For sure, those movies exist. For sure, some of those movies are received well. For instance, let's look at Inglorious Bastards. A movie beloved by literally everybody I know that watched it around the time of release. Some great action, but a lot of it is story building and exposition. I have met people recently that say it was boring. Same with O Brother Where Art Thou. A masterpiece in its time that everybody enjoyed. Now? Several people I've met hate it. A more recent example is Mother! with Jennifer Lawrence. Not a movie for everybody, but a good movie with a solid message and a bit of a mind-bender (unless you are just really good at seeing the metaphors immediately, unlike I was). I know 3 people who like it and dozens who said they absolutely hated it and that it was boring. Games are getting the same treatment. Story-heavy games don't get the love. Some game producers know this and have stated as much recently. What IS getting the love is constantly releasing content for online multiplayers and microtransactions to give players a shortcut to things in-game that they'd otherwise have to work towards earning via completing parts of the game or getting via random drops. RNG is tough in some games, sure, but it is part of the appeal to keep playing certain games (at least for me). By taking this route, we're not getting GOOD content as often in games. Instead, we're just getting more average to below average content, because more is better right? Why have less content that is better when you can have more content that is worse? It's more to do. Don't get bored, here, distract yourself with this. Continue playing.

The shift in our society between the 90s, 2000s, and now can be witnessed through the games that are released. Games cater to society. As society goes, so will gaming.

It's definitely not as hard as the OG ones, but the fun factor is still there, which is what I really care about.
