Wilks won't interview with Colts

The GM does the hiring, no? I’m pretty sure the Giants will be looking for a seasoned guy that stabilize things.

As for Wilks, the jury is still out on his coaching abilities, tbh, the defense looked confused at times. I’ve never seen Luke so frustrated over coverage busts.

Collaborative effort, which is what Gettleman has always said he prefers (even here).

John Mara has joined into the process before. This year, Steve Tisch joined in too. Reports I read seemed to indicate that was unexpected.

Mara made it clear up front that he wanted either someone who had been a head coach before or someone who had been a coordinator for a long time. Wilks didn't check either of those boxes.

Getting interviews per Rooney rule

I know people won't like this.... but this is highly likely. He hasn't accomplished much as a DC. I feel like he's going to be back. He definitely will get his shot, but its likely not this year.

And who knows.... maybe he's OUR next head coach.

I don't get why Patricia is a hot commodity. His defenses aren't very good.

Its the idea the Patriots have figured something out that leads to their success, and that one of those assistants could bring that secret sauce to your franchise. Part of the reason that doesn't work is the assistants can't take the Bills, Dolphins and Jets with them to play against twice a year.

Going forward can we just rename Wilks to Rooney? DC Rooney? Bueller? The Colts aren't getting McDaniels, they interviewed the Baylor coach which is sad.

The Colt's just may be the worst situation in the NFL for a coach to take on.  They make the Panthers FO look like a well oiled machine and the Browns seem almost competent.

Yeah, especially tough situation for a defense-oriented coach to step into... the cupboard on defense is especially bare right now, it's a rebuild.

You know what they say about a family tree that doesn't fork?   *Banjo plays in the background*

Well, this one doesn't seem to branch out at all.

O'Brien is the only head coach I can think of off the top of my head with the Belichick connection. Crennel didn't do so good as a head coach. Weis was a disaster. McDaniels failed in his first shot but might get another. Vrabel and Patricia may get their chances too.

Belichick has a connection with Greg Schiano too, though as far as I know they haven't worked directly together. Schiano was awful in the pros and got vetoed by fans when Tennessee tried to hire him.

Basically, Patriot assistants just don't really seem to succeed much outside of the New England system or away from Belichick.

Makes you wonder how the hell old Bill can make magic with those guys.  Apparently he must micro manage the hell of them as they seem incapable of retaining anything he's taught them.

There is one other factor to consider.

Last year, the secondary guys had Wilks as their position coach.

This year, they had a fairly inexperienced Curtis Fuller and Richard Rodgers.

I still support the decision to elevate Wilks to DC, but I do find myself wondering if we could have done a better job of backfilling.

Well there you go.

He's been here as long as Rivera and he keeps getting shifted around to a different coaching position all the time and it seems like every friggin area he starts to coach ends up sucking.

He and Rivera are college teammates.

Ron seems determined to keep him employed.
