Field Turf at BoA?

The Observer ran an article Tuesday about Raleigh and Amazon. But buried deep was this comment below from Charlotte Developer Johnny Harris:

Quote

Harris is a minority owner in the Carolina Panthers, but he said he doesn't know any details about the sale process.

"I know nothing, I'm just an investor," said Harris. He said Erskine Bowles, another minority owner who is representing the group, also hasn't learned details. "He doesn't know anything, because I've asked him."

The Jerry Awards are named in part after team owner and founder Jerry Richardson, who is selling the team in the wake of accusations that he sexually harassed female employees.

Harris predicted that the new owner, who could be named this spring, would not seek to move the team out of Charlotte.

"There's no reason to move the team," Harris said, citing the Charlotte market's growth, fan base and sales. "(The NFL owners) love this market. They love the job Jerry's done."

He did predict one change: "I do think you may see turf field immediately with a new owner."

Something tells me that Jerry's old school mentality has kept the field natural. Here's to change and hopefully the removal of the shield at midfield.

I guess what I'd like to know is why was this  the first change that came to mind? If it was the minority owners who were pushing for turf, well they aren't going to be the minority owners so they don't have any say.

Not just that, if a new owner comes in and says.... "I own an NFL team, and my first order of business is change the turf. Yes, I like this idea."

I'd be a bit concerned, no?

Lastly,

Does it cost less? Is it preferred by the players or owners? Does it offer a competitive advantage? Or is it just something fun and new?

We are voted always voted on by the players as one of the best fields in the league.

Really? Because I remember the 2015 season when players were constantly complaining about the field. I believe it was re-sodded during the season at least 3 times. They did do a complete overhaul later, but they have struggled with the field in recent years. It certainly hasn't been voted on as being one the best.

I have been on most of the artificial turfs in the NFL.

I would not trade any for how the BoA field feels.

Artificial turf is just terrible for all involved. Upside is it's cheaper to maintain and a REALLY bad grass field (i.e. the Redskins in the playoff game where Griffin hurt his knee) is worse than turf at it's worst, but if you have a good field crew that second part wouldn't ever be an issue and really the costs are minimal. Everything else about grass is significantly better than turf.

    • They've gone way overboard with the masking of plays by only filming the ball in air.  Nobody is analyzing camp highlights.
    • Canales up first. Guys got their legs back yesterday and started a little slow when they came out Bryce challenged them in the huddle and they responded "Dominant practice for the defense today." Praised turnovers, "beautiful hits," and being physical Praised Moehrig, Ransom, Incoom, and Jones II Confirmed playing starters. Predominantly a young team and can't pass up an opportunity. Emphasized game day routines such as nutrition, body readiness, etc. Plus it's a bunch of new guys on the defense. Bryce will start. Will play them the first two, but starters might sit for the third game depending on how practice goes that week. Nic Scourton has a mild hamstring that happened in special teams. DJ Johnson had an issue with his hip flare up and is getting checked out this afternoon. Experimenting with approach to preseason games. In Seattle they played their starters in all but the last preseason game and what Pete Carroll was looking for in terms of mental readiness to play football. Thomas Incoom has been getting a lot of work with AC Carter adding to his toolbelt. Getting better as a rusher and being physical in the run game. Looking for a consistency in response. 1pt for a win, 3pts for a TD. Defense doesn't like that, but in games if they give up one go ball the score can swing. They challenged the pass game and the run game today. Guys are getting together before, between, and after team drills to challenge each other Job of the coaching staff to set the foundation for our schemes, philosophy, and expectations of what it's like to play Panthers football. Powerful when players take that and the locker room owns it. That's when it becomes our team, their team. At the end of the day, the men on the field have to rebound from a bad play, celebrate the good plays, and keep each other in tune for a whole game. Robert Hunt is amazing. Size, talent, quickness, flexibility. Really intelligent guy that there will say himself there are technique things he needs to work on. Regardless of where players are at, there's a constant learning curve and loves that Big Rob is challenging himself with the position coach. Thinks the digital down and distance can be really valuable. Getting the information quickly will help with the flow of the game. Thought TMac looked great but there were some near misses that he'll have to get in the room and communicate with Bryce on while reviewing film. James Mitchell keeps doing right and his trust factor is increasing with the QBs. If you're right and the coverage says the ball goes there, it'll come. Had some issues at the start of camp but is trending up. Newton or Person: "It looked like today was beyond thud but short of live. What do you call that?" Canales: "No, that's thud. In my mind, that's what thud should look like. The challenge for our defensive guys is can you put your body in a position where we know that would've been a tackle." Whizzing by, tagging with two hands, etc doesn't show you whether you would've made a tackle. That's not real football. Let's the play extend because guys have to be ready to chase sometime where the ball squirts out from a pit. Can't train to say "Ah, it was a tackle" and relax but instead play with intensity through the whistle. Lathan Ransom is bringing the physical style of play that they saw on film. Has been really into the details and someone that they can count on. Has really given himself a chance to start at the other safety position. Excited for the extra energy from a game-like environment that they'll get from FanFest. Used to have four preseason games and now FanFest feels like that first one. Will give ST full speed reps to evaluate. Making plays and feeding off of the fans. Window closed quickly on the INT to finish practice. CSW baited Bryce with some movement and made a great play. Saw it from Bryce's perspective with TMac coming open. Has played all over the secondary that they can count on to speak loudly and be on the same page with his teammates.
