How does the Rhule hire help us strategically?

Rhule sounds like Dave Gettleman, and he couldn't be more wrong here

He parrots old time conventional wisdom that has been disproven with data.  Most of you will likely agree with the following quote, but it's because you're too ignorant to know any better and were raised on football cliches.

i mean after this season i'm pretty ok with a coach that wants an offensive line and a defense that can stop the run

Ok, so we have analytics to bring in the raw players, who is teaching all of them?

All of this excitement about how he's going to use 'data' to bring in raw players is misguided, given he's not our general manager (and ostensibly not going to handle the draft or free agency).

I don't really care if he found some raw gems for Temple, as this skill is not transferable to the NFL.

And if we fire Hurney and somehow elevate Rhule to both general manager and coach, we might as well move the team to London.

The only skill set he excels in that might transfer to the NFL is commanding the respect of his players, but we already had that in Ron Rivera.

I don't want a coach who is all about the schemes and calling plays. Then they don't coach up players. He is perfect for what we need. A change in culture starting with the trenches. It reminds me of Bill Parcells, a regular guys who coaches and gets the most out of players. I hope we have a program like the Patriots where we compete every year for the playoffs. That's culture, getting the most out of players. Teams like the Giants who won 2 super bowls with not a lot of great talent or even our 2015 team didn't have a lot of great players but we got the most out of them that year. Picture that every year. It's about team not just the stars.

If Cam plays out his last year and Rhule gets some Olineman in there, we could have a decent year while building. If not and they blow it up and start from scratch, then so be it.

I think the future looks bright even if it's 2 or 3 years down the road.

So you don't believe he meant what he said (especially given it was reflected in how both Temple and Baylor were run)?

Is your theory that he's really a brilliant guy who understands the data, but chose to lie in his talks to disguise his true thoughts?

No I agree I think he likes to run the ball and if you wanted a guy who was going to throw the ball constantly its not your hire, but I think you also have to understand who his audience was and what his goals are.  That was his introduction to Texas High School Football coaches, the people who guide the players he had to recruit to suceed.  Its also fair in my mind to say he was pushing a narrative that he felt he needed to in order to relate to a lot of the old school tough minded Texas High School coaces, though yeah its probably got a little truth behind it.  Also Baylor was run and developed with a lot of the principles he said he hated in that article already.  Its not like they were running it 60% of the time, they hovered around a 50/50 run/pass ratio his last two years and were in the top 15 in pass % his first year, right around Texas Tech that year.  I think its pretty clear he works with what he has regarldess.  All i'm saying is there is a lot more data to look at with him than a single article that has been the foundation of a lot of hate on Rhule, whos quotes had a clear audience in mind.

Newsflash, our culture was exceptional under Ron Rivera.   Ron Rivera is one of the greatest culture builders in the league, and his players were absolutely willing to die from him.

We even had a pretty good culture under John Fox.  That has never been our issue as a franchise.   A lot of empty platitudes being regurgitated in this thread without much critical examination.

And how is Rhule going to 'get us some Olineman'?  Is he taking over for Hurney as general manager and handling the draft and free agency?

They liked Rivera, not sure how many respected him as much as you think.  He threw players under the bus at pressers.  When you hear your coach do that, you feel betrayed.  Players pay attention to that.

Yes, he is a bit unknown in the NFL, but those of you comparing him to other college coaches entering the NFL need to understand one thing:  He did things in college they never did.

About your dismissal of his finding the best athletes--do you know how critically important that would be in the later rounds of the draft?  It means he DEVELOPS players.

Ron was not developing young players--he was benching them.

There are 2 categories for Rhule at this point:

What you like about him and what you don't know about him.  Anyone dismissing him is just being a pissy little baby who did not get his choice.  The more I read about Rhule, the more excited I become.

I feel like Rivera was always playing catch up in the league. He was behind in the strategic trends, how the winds of the nfl were blowing.

My hope is that Rhule and Tepper are more forward thinking and creating those trends and not reacting to them years later.

Would have been much happier snagging a coach in the NFL that is already responsible for those new trends.

Our ownership/leadership has put the team at a huge competitive disadvantage for the longest time.  Time to take a chance and try to get out ahead of everyone.

That depends on how you define culture--and you know no more than anyone else--probably less, which explains the condescending sarcasm.   To know a culture, you have to be part of it.  Ron trashing players to the media?  Good culture?  Nope.

For anyone missing Ron, I hear Washington is looking for new fans. Most of us didn't mind him taking his coaches so we will support you in joining him in proving us all wrong. As a positive, you get your Josh on. Good luck.

I haven't heard anything bad but there are a lot if unknowns to go along with the positives that need to be comfirmed. One thing that keeps popping into my heard with the koolaid being thrown around is whats his learning curve going to be? I think it unrealistic that someone is perfect and won't take lumps. So far it's looking hopefull but not guaranteed

Those of you who like this guy, sell me on how he helps us outsmart our opponents.

Because that's just something we haven't had in at least the last two coaching staffs.

I was led to believe that analytics was going to be an important part of the decision making process and that having an aggressive or at least progressive offensive mind was desired.

Does this guy have it? If he does, show me, because I don't like this feeling we made an epic mistake.

So far all I've seen is that he believes the players should be healthy (duh) and that his strength is essentially coaching up a team of Rudy's. Taking garbage players and turning them into average Joe's by inspiring then or whatever.

Seriously, I'm not trying to poo poo the decision. I just want to be sold on an aspect I think is important and that I'm afraid we just missed out on because a coach who built his reputation on motivating people motivated Tepper to give him a 7 year deal to the tune of about $65mil.

(Btw, I think anything more than a 5 year deal is a mammoth mistake for a HC).

Apparently he has a passion for not losing to the same team twice. (Eg Penn State)

And though I didn't watch the SugarBowl, I saw a bunch of people impressed with Rhule's halftime adjustments.

You're missing the point of the hire.

The intent wasn't to chase the McVayvian trend of hiring super offense Mastermind guy.

This was more of a John harbaugh hiring. Finding somebody with experience all over the field who lacks an almost partisan attachment to some kind of schematic methodology (thus liberating the team to quickly adapt), who has an affinity for building newer systems and techniques ala analytics while still maintaining a concern for traditional toughness and fundamentals. Throw in the communication skills and you describe John harbaugh to a tee.

Idk if it will work out but the intent is obvious.

I believe it was lacanfora who stated on numerous occasions last season when harbaugh was on the brink of getting fired that he felt if Harbaugh did then Tepper would be all over him.

Now that has played out, at least in prinicple.

    • I think you're being short sighted, if you need a wr next year draft one or get one in FA.  I guarantee that if we double dip at wr and one gets 30 targets, 90% of the huddle will call him a bust and want another wideout next year
