Panthers "lining up" an interview with Jerry Reese

Per Ian Rapoport: A look at all ongoing head coach and GM searches

Also "expected" to interview Jeff Ireland, Ed Dodds, Adam Peters, Joe Schoen and Seahawks VP Scott Fitterer.

Fitterer is interesting because he doesn't have a connection with the Panthers that I know of, but co-VP Trent Kirchner does. It was generally believed that if we went after one of those two, it'd be Kirchner.

Carolina Panthers (GM): Coach Matt Rhule will have a heavy influence on the process, and it wouldn't be a surprise if they hire someone with a connection to him, as they did in bringing in Pat Stewart as director of player personnel last year. The Panthers are lining up an interview with former Giants GM Jerry Reese, who worked with Rhule in New York in 2012. They are also expected to interview Saints VP/assistant GM of college personnel Jeff Ireland and Colts assistant GM Ed Dodds. Other names to watch include 49ers vice president of player personnel Adam Peters -- who played for Rhule at UCLA in 2001 -- as well as Seahawks VP of football operations Scott Fitterer and Joe Schoen from Buffalo.

Reese is 57, not as old as Marty but older than the other candidates.

He's got two rings as a GM but in his last few seasons the Giants really went off the rails.

Not sure how he feels about analytics.

Kinda wonder if bringing him in means Marc Ross gets a job here too.

Was planning to research him anyway due to the Rhule connection. Will need to add Fitterer to that list now. Most of the others are already done except Pat Stewart, who still seems like more of an Assistant GM candidate to me these days.

His coaching hires are what baffled me the most.  Maybe coming here with a coach already in place like he had when he first started would be a positive thing for him.

Jerry Reese was with the NY Giants for 23 years and was fired and replaced by Ben McAdoo then DG. He helped NY Giants get to 2 SB's with his 23 year stint there.

Reese wasn't replaced by McAdoo. He hired him as head coach.

Tepper needs to be involved in this process and hire the right guy, not some guy Rhule worked with a decade ago or something.

The guy who kept "great evaluator of talent" Marty Hurney around for the last few years?

Yeah...No thanks

Give me Dodds all day. He doesn’t like the spotlight, which could work fine here with Rhule being the face of the staff. Just go look at what people credit Dodds for, it’s impressive as hell. Big part of the creation of the Legion of Boom and the Colts great drafts and undrafted free agents.

I hate to ask because it is always a factor one must consider, but is the "Rooney Rule' applicable here?

He does have 2 rings, but one was earned by a 9-7 team that was one of the luckiest runs I have ever seen.

Still, do not discount experience, and I imagine that GMs with experience are going to be in demand.

Is Marty going to interview in Washington?  Abbott needs his Costello or he is just Abbott.
