Rapoport: Panthers expected to be in the mix for Watson.

I cant believe i am saying this but I like where we are positioned and like the prospects in this class quite a bit, wouldn't feel comfortable upending the entire process with an obscene haul like Houston has suggested

Obviously if that asking price has tanked significantly then pull the trigger

This is very true. However, a couple things come to play when making this decision as a team trading a player away:

1. Will this impact the texans chance of getting back into the playoffs if watson is in their conference? (ie would this make the jets competitive for years to come, therefore eliminating a playoff spot for the texans to grab for the next 5-7 years)
2. Does the team who receives Watson cause their first round pick to de-value based on their division competition? (ie. Dolphins would most likely become AFC east favorites with Watson, therefore their 1st round picks in the future would equate to late round picks)

3. Is the team on the no-trade clause list?

AND they have the cap space, draft capital and equally young QBs to swap in such a trade.  WE CAN'T DO IT.  Dream people.  Some folks will always chase a big name, ramifications and consequences be damned.  Just got rid of Hurney, Just got of rid of most of our dead cap, and finally will have some decent cap space.

Nope, chase the shiny object.

The salary cap would be wide open, especially after this year. And as I posted in another message on this thread, we wouldnt keep Watson at the current contract, we'd extend. Every single team who would trade for watson would do this. Pending on what players were dealt in this deal, we could create a massive cap gap. Also, the cap opens up extremely after this year.

My point is that it wouldn’t be open with a 40.4 million dollar cap figure the following year. You can extend but he is still going to want top QB money, and that figure going down could only be had by kicking the can down the road like with Brees (which is fine, he should be paid that amount because he is a top talent QB)

The issue I am bringing up is fielding a competitive TEAM around him in order to compete. The talent level and holes we have is actually worse than the Texans currently if we give up that capitol, so how do you field a team that can compete for a championship with all the other holes.

Again I would be thrilled to have him, I just don’t see how we compete with the situation we are currently in now.

Not me.  I am in favor of staying put at 8 and play the hand we are dealt.

I'm leaning that way also. I never wanted to trade up, and generally hate losing draft capital (especially in rounds 1 and 2). That being said, how could I really get mad at acquiring Deshaun Watson if it happens? If you make a move like that, you just tighten your belts for a time, be smart and particular about your choices for a time, get through it and move on.

There would not still be that 40.4 million dollar cap figure. The Panthers literally could front load his entire contract to 2021 if they wanted to and build for years to come. The way watson's contract is currently written is a big fug you to the texans. It's a bad contract. Even when it was occurring many sports outlets were saying the contract was a desperate attempt for the Texans to keep him. Whoever his new team is, they are going to throw that thing out and turn it into a long term deal that is manageable for the franchise. The current contract is way too risky, and no one will trade all these assets without revising the entire contract.

Our 1st and 2nd, Tedward Scissorhands, and Shaq.

add another first and that deal would be probably pretty close to what we offer. Maybe a 2nd and 3rd pick swap. I don't think we would offer much more than that, bc the Texans arent in a place where they have much leverage.
