Washington Football Team finalizing deal with Marty Hurney

We have to stop giving Hurney credit for his 1st-round picks.  Yes, it was nice to not have to worry about drafting a bust.  But a big reason for that is because Hurney always went with the high-floor player in the 1st.  The only time he took a prospect that would have required NFL-level scouting and could be deemed a risk was Cam Newton.  Otherwise, there is a reason we drafted RBs and LBs in the 1st round often under him.  Easily the positions where it is easiest for young players to transition into the NFL immediately.  I mean look at Kuechly.  Anyone who saw him play knew that worst-case scenario, he was going to be a solid starter.

And I think Hurney's track record after the 1st round proves this.  He's not good at evaluating talent.  He's just good at taking the safe route in the 1st.

Hurney isnt the talent scout and drafts who the people that work for him tell are a good fit.

The unfortunate thing there is that he was also the guy who hired the scouts that evaluated the prospects.

Marty had zero experience as a scout or talent evaluator before he was elevated to a job where you really really need to have those skills.

Richardson making him GM was like taking a kid that worked in the mailroom and making him CEO of a major corporation.

Every OC/DC hire seemed to be from within and we noticed that the talent and coaching prowess seemed to go down every time. A new GM that might tell Dan that Ron isn’t the right guy is a threat. It might even be subconscious but even the Norv higher was someone who had 0 interest in being a HC again.

It’s just a guess but based on this news, Ron absolutely goes with safe hires he knows and is happy to promote from within. Sometimes that’s OK but he clearly never went with a hot commodity especially since he was on the hot seat the last couple years.

What's funny about that is that making those safe choices helped cost him his job here, and very easily could there too.

Missing on literally everything else other than 1st round picks clearly sets us back for years too.

He had some other hits. Not a ton and overall his drafting was definitely below average, even with the 1st round hits. But drafting wasn't his main weakness, it was choosing who to pay and when to pay and how much to pay. He was an absolute pushover in that aspect and that's what set us back much further than his drafting.

That was his problem in the draft. Everything was hit or miss. We couldn't build an overall roster because there was no roster filler available. Those good backup types and serviceable starter types that other teams typically find in the mid to late rounds. He always swung for the fences and when you do that you're going to strike out and hit a lot more pop flies than home runs.

One playoff appearance, one winning season together in 6 years right? Go get 'em WFT!

Ron Rivera, Marty Hurney, Taylor Heinicke...good luck Washington.

I’d take heinicke over our backups

maybe Marty will take Grier in a trade for a third

I had read on Twitter, many times (even before Hurney was fired), that him joining Ron in Washington was a good possibility, but a part of me didn't really believe it.

It is mind blowing to me that Ron would look at the past three years and say "yeah, I want to recreate that."

    • Eye care is a topic most people know nothing about. Sure, we all know that you buy glasses when you're unable to see, but what more is there? If you want to learn all about caring for your eyes the right way, the tips and tricks found in this article will be sure to help you out. If your eyes are irritated by pollen or feel dry, use an eyewash. The eyewash can rinse your eyes of the impurities and make them feel more refreshed. Follow instructions on the package carefully. After the eyewash, your eyes should feel much better. Use the product a couple of times a day or as directed. A wide-brimmed hat can be your best friend when outdoors, especially when the sun is shining. A hat offers a lot of protection for your face, including areas like your eyelids where sun can sneak in around the edges of glasses. Eyelids are a fairly common place for melanoma to develop, so cover up outdoors with a stylish hat whenever you can. • Nah, Baker definitely wasn’t better than he was a couple seasons he had in Clev.  I mean, he was that guy.  That’s the dude we thought we were getting.  We just happen to a QBs worst nightmare.  Bakers best seasons are his 11-5 season, his rookie season and his Tampa season.  You can play with the order but you do it because it’s all comparable.  the defensive part….is being defensive about Canales.  Because the only QB you can claim he was a QB whisperer for was Geno….the dude that walked in on a team that won 10+ for a decade.  Canales had 1 year as a NFL OC  where he lead the 20th ranked O in a trash division.   And only Carolina talked to him.  Everyone isn’t going to be searching and arguing everything to positive given our consistent track record. Maybe he surprises.  Maybe Morgan too.  They certainly aren’t excitable hires though
