So the owner keeps a powerless GM around to blame and fire when things go bad, then leaks the blame to select people to post on message boards to restore fan faith. (because the team only makes money when the message boards are happy.) Makes sense.

Shitty GM getting poo canned for doing a poo job = crazy conspiracy fan fiction.

Washington fan perspective...

I'm pretty sure most of us have wished Rivera the best. We may have hated his coaching but we all thought he was a good guy.

stockholm syndrome

also this guy’s take is very inaccurate. i 100% haven’t believed in hurney as a GM since that horrible AZ divisional game in january 2009, and that was a few years before ron rivera’s name was ever associated with this organization

Washington is getting what they need. Someone who will get Rivera the guys he wants and who has a great relationship with him. At this point it seems to be a good plan. Just because Hurney's future wasn't here doesn't mean he won't be effective working with an old school coach who believes similarly to him. Neither Hurney or Rivera were a good fit for our analytics driven approach but for old school traditional football they both seem to fit in fairly well. Hurney can train his successor.

I mean he did that here and it didn't work at all either, before and after Tepper.

No winning seasons as a GM since Fox was our Head coach.

Those two have never put a winning team on the field. Marty  and Ron. It's a dynamically bad duo.

Why anyone would expect anything different is beyond me. All they do is lose together. 4.5ish years and yup, no winning. This is built to fail.

Well if WFT signed cam wouldn’t that indicate that hurney wasn’t behind the release of cam, therefore making his role in the teddy signing even more questionable ?

I mean he wasn’t the future here and may not have wanted to take that backseat role if he knew he had another gm job lined up in Washington. Plenty of reason to move on from hurney besides performance

This is...eye opening 😳

Okay, Hurney didn't pick all the players the way, say, Bobby Beathard picked just about everybody who played for the Redskins in those four Super Bowls. "I am not," Hurney said in a conversation yesterday, "an evaluator at all."

But he did have critical input in identifying and hiring John Fox, the head coach. "He does get involved with personnel," said Beathard, Hurney's mentor and the man who facilitated the transition from covering an NFL team to running one. "He's a great guy to sit around when the scouts are in and he gets the conversation going. But I don't think he's pushy or thinks he has the experience to make those decisions."

Hurney is a facilitator, a consensus builder, an administrator who can pull together all manner of resources, start a very democratic process that works well for the Panthers, then sit with the coach and owner and come to sharp, well-reasoned decisions.

The above excerpt comes from a profile of Marty that was written by Michael Wilbon in 2004 when the Panthers were headed to the Super Bowl. You can read the full article at the link below:

MARTY HURNEYGM, UNSIGNED FREE AGENT

Washington is "close" to hiring former Carolina general manager Marty Hurney as the team's next general manager.

Fired by the Panthers twice over the past eight years, Hurney is the frontrunner to land the Washington GM job and rejoin former Panthers head coach Ron Rivera. Hurney's personal issues and questionable team building make him a curious hire for the Football Team, though he could fit well with the team's dysfunctional and toxic culture. Hurney in 2018 was investigated by the NFL after claims of harassment by his ex-wife and eventually cleared of wrongdoing

It sure explains a lot and kills some fan theories about Hurney.  Also why he did so poorly when Fox was a lame duck. Also raises the question, if those two did so poorly here then how bad can they be with WTF?

"I am not," Hurney said in a conversation yesterday, "an evaluator at all."  My new favorite quote lol. Thank you Scott for this gem.

That is a gem.  Not a talent evaluator at all, and not a contract negotiator at all.  That does explain some things.

    • Be careful, I was told yesterday that our defense was solid. While signing Clowney helped that, I still agree that CB, and ILB are big needs and day 1 starters can be found at 33, 39, and 65. The same can be said for C and WR (deep draft). I would love for those 4 positions to be addressed with our first 4 picks. I have a feeling that if the right ILB is there, Morgan will have a hard time passing on him.
