On Matt Stafford and the Carolina Panthers

The closest comparison I can find was the Alex Smith trade to the Redskins.  Which cost a 3rd and a player.

The player was Kendall Fuller, a young decent slot corner at the time, so you can guess how to translate that to what that draft compensation would equal.  My guess is a 4th at best because he only had one year in the league at the time and was drafted as a 3rd round pick.

I don't think that's a great comparison, but yeah, it's probably the best recent comparison. I think Stafford is viewed as a definitely level or two above Smith though.

It's similar age, position, contact length and value (adjusted for inflation).

Yeah the pot would have to be sweetened because Stafford's talent is and should be viewed as greater. We'd also likely be offering a starting QB in return instead of a second year slot corner so that would be a factor too.

Smith did also negotiate a contract extension with the Redskins trade too.

There is zero chance that any trade with Detroit for Stafford would include Bridgewater. None. With his contract, Bridgewater has negative value.

People really underestimate how badly teams seek QBs.  If the Bears were willing to take on Nick Foles and his contract from the Jaguars, then I am 100% positive the Panthers could trade Bridgewater if they really wanted or had to.  Even if it meant we were only getting a 5th or 4th round pick in return.

I don't think we would trade him unless we were getting another QB though.  But if we need him traded we could find partners.  Broncos for example.

How many 30+ year olds switch teams and lead them to a SB win?

since the year 2000 all I’ve seen was:

Manning

Brad Johnson

Trent Dilfer

The common denominator amongst those QBs, they all rode on the backs of amazing defenses and did ‘just enough’ to get that Lombardi

In short, we’re not the Ravens, Tampa or #gulp Broncos defense of those SB runs so a guy like Stafford is a bridge of continued mediocrity of 9-7 10-6, 7-9 seasons

you either go for bust with Watson or use draft capital on a rookie and develop them

Oddly enough, it would take some work on the Bridgewater contract to make it attractive. In a trade he is still going to have an $18 mil cap figure next year and a $21 mil cap figure in 2022. It's a pretty rough contract for another team to assume.

That’s not relevant every Qb is different

Let it be known that Deshaun Watson is my first, second, and third pick for a veteran QB.

Another QB has been brought into the mix, Matt Stafford of the Detroit Lions.

Here is a breakdown of Stafford's stats.

stafford.jpg

Positives

Good arm, can drive the ball down the field.

Has maintained a very good QR rating despite playing for a bad team.

Has stayed healthy mostly.

Negatives

Not especially mobile

32 years old

I think most of us can agree he would be an upgrade over Teddy, but is he the right guy to build a long term championship caliber team with?

What say ye, oh Huddle of infinite wisdom?

I don’t know how you go from TBs contract to Stafford’s contract unless you trade TB....and I’m not sure the Lions are doing that without some other significant compensation. Which crosses Stafford off the list for me.

If we’re talking a TB/Stafford swap and maybe including a 3rd day pick to the Lions then I’d be down for that. But nothing significant.

If Wilson is gone, I absolutely would like Stafford. He can be what Teddy was thought (by some) to be. A good bridge QB that can get us by until we can get a good rookie QB. Would probably mean we’d either have to get lucky in the latter part of the first on a QB or trade up, but we’d have options without having to endure torturous, embarrassing seasons like this year until we find him.  Do I think Stafford can carry the team in his back to a Super Bowl? Probably not. Can Stafford be a contributing piece to a Super Bowl caliber team? Absolutely.
