NO TO WATSON, NO TO STAFFORD.... YOU WIN THROUGH THE DRAFT

Jake Delhomme almost won the Panthers a Super Bowl against Tom Brady if not for variables outside of his control.

The OP's Super Bowl list has several QBs that weren't even drafted by their teams.

Bottom line:  There is more than one way to win a Super Bowl.  The QB is only one of countless factors.

Montana didn't do terrible actually, and for that time period in the NFL his stats weren't terrible either.   Also his first season there he took them to an AFC Championship.   They won 13 games that season.  The second year wasn't as good but still led them to the playoffs.    He was also 36 when he was traded.

Joe Flacco was really never that great.   He won a Super Bowl yes but he's quite inferior to someone like Stafford.

Vick actually had one of his best seasons as an actual passer with the Eagles.    He was never that great before, was just flashy.   Stafford is a much better QB.

Cousins has been great since joining the Vikings, he just had a 35 td - 13 int season for instance.

Favre had his best season of his career way late with the Vikings.   If not for the NFL letting the Saints headhunt him in the playoffs with late hits over and over, they probably go deeper.

Palmer was already an injury risk years and years before he went to Raiders.  Stafford also is much better.

Cam..... was broken and everyone knew that.

So really, that isn't totally true about not having success.

That Favre game is the only other game that can be talked about on the level of that week 1 Bronco rematch.   Favre was abused.

Never understand "build up your team first, then get your QB". Well what makes you so sure you'll be able to get your franchise QB? By the time you're able to, you might have to rebuild your team again because your other pieces have gotten too old. Get your franchise QB whenever you can. Watson is the best option.

How about we flip the Packers script and if they want to keep Rodgers happy and trade Love. Would you pay a 2nd to get a young athletic big armed QB with a 1st round rookie contract?

This isn't a terrible idea . . . but the dude hasn't thrown a pass.  I really would have liked to see him do some mop up duty this year.  There have been many two score+ wins for the Pack where he could have gotten some snaps.  Might be reading too much into it, but I really would have liked that.

...and yet the Bucs are going to the Superbowl with Brady, when they had no shot beforehand.

Favre spent a full season with the Falcons before being traded, so I wouldn't count him as being "drafted" by the Packers.

I think if you look at it from a different perspective, say the 2nd (aka big) contract of QB's, then Drew Brees falls right into that category.

Stafford is on or going on his 3rd contract, so he'd be a short-term plan. But Watson is just beginning his 2nd contract term, aka the prime years. Like Brees. Like Favre. Like Warner.

Granted, I just don't think we have the space or capital to give up what they'd want for Watson, so this is all speculation.

But for me, I'd put Watson in the Brees/Favre/Warner category.

Super Bowl Winners per season

1991- Giants (Hostetler was drafted)

1992-  Redskins (Rypien was drafted)

1993 and 1994- Cowboys (Aikman was drafted)

1995- 49ers (Young had been with the 49ers for 8 years prior to winning SB, was a long standing Montana backup)

1996- Packers (for all intent purposes Favre was Packers, can't count his ATL year)

1997-1998- Broncos (Elway, technically drafted by Colts but he was a Bronco)

1999- Rams (Warner, 28 year old who was grossly underseen and caught lightning in a bottle)

2000- Ravens (Dilfer, 28 year old signed to backup T. Banks, was brought in to manage the offense)

2001- Patriots (Brady, drafted)

2002- Bucs (Johnson, 34 year old free agent who guided a studded defense)

2003- Patriots (Brady, drafted)

2004- Patriots (Brady, drafted)

2005- Steelers (Roethlisberger, drafted)

2006- Colts (Manning, drafted)

2007- Giants (Manning, drafted)

2008- Steelers (Roethlisberger, drafted)

2009- Saints (Brees, 30 year old FA who was supposedly busted due to a shoulder)

2010- Packers (Rogers, drafted)

2011- Giants (Manning, drafted)

2012- Ravens (Flacco, drafted)

2013- Seahwawks (Wilson, drafted)

2014- Patriots (Brady, drafted)

2015- Broncos (Manning, free agent signing, rode an impressive defense and Roger Goodell)

2016- Patriots (Brady, drafted)

2017- Eagles (Wentz led them and was drafted, Foles won the game)

2018- Patriots (Brady, drafted)

2019- Chiefs (Mahomes, drafted)

With the rarity free agents like Brees, Brad Johnson, Dilfer or Warner, if you want to win the big one you don't trade for a soon to be 33 player like Stafford or give up a kings ransom for Watson. You get there by nailing it in the draft

Well, I’d say the Bucs are fairly happy with their FA QB

He wasn’t active a lot he’s raw but they drafted because of his physical tools

The stats make sense, but it’s primary because elite QBs never get traded in the NFL. They only get traded or sighed like Warner and Favre before they prove how great they can be or are starting to decline like Montana to the Chiefs. Watson is demanding a trade at the peak of his career as one of the best QBs in the game. It never really happens, so it’s more of an unknown.

That's even scarier.  You've got a rookie first rounder who can't even get on the bench.  It's exactly the sort of thing that terrifies me about Trey Lance.

Or we can play the Buccaneers route build a team and then become a destination for a disgruntled QB.  Watson and Stafford will have some say in where they go and we are not built to win just by adding a QB.  Broncos did the same thing with Manning.  The defense was the MVP for that team.  Long game y'all.  One more off season and draft. Let 2022 come around and once again some QB will decide they are unhappy somewhere and here we are.

I agree with your first phrase, but not so sure about the second.

It was mentioned in the TB broadcast that Brady's reason for going there was the wealth of "weapons" (i.e., WRs) that he lacked at NE.  Surely Watson could envision the same potential weapons with the Panthers' WRs.  Ask yourself if the Bucs were any better built for a comparable addition than we'd be, were we to land Watson.  I'd guess that with Watson at the helm, our Offense could easily average 30 a game.

Stafford would be worth it to trade if TB was involved and no first round pick. If this was the case I would be more comfortable taking a chance on someone like Lance. I really want Kyle Pitts at 8 or trade down if we feel he will last until later. If a Stafford trade doesn’t work out which I feel it wont since the Colts will most likely give up their first for him, I wouldn’t mind taking on Sam Darnold for a 2nd or 3rd if the Jets go for Fields. No harm in seeing if the guy has it even after Gase especially when this year TB can’t be cut unless we just wanna say fug 20 million. All I know is this isn’t the last year we will have a chance at a decent QB. I know everyone is upset about the fact we lost out on the 3rd pick but honestly I feel we would’ve fuged it up and gotten Fields. Unlike the rest of this forum I have 0 trust in OSU QBs in the NFL.
