Carolina Panthers to be 'aggressive' in pursuit of potential Deshaun Watson trade

Situational player from a small school with high athletic upside... Had a breakout fourth season which is close to on par for defensive tackles... Aaron Donalds don't grow on trees. An emotional ejection seems to give him a bad rap... A bust would be Eli Apple the 10th pick of the same draft.

...and in his 5th year he had 0 sacks. And don't tell me you can judge a rotational DT on how good his team is.

But enough about that scrub in this Watson thread, lol.

Dude that was 2016 chuck go home and put not the rock.

Sigh. It was 15 for the Panthers during their SB year. JT for the Panthers first rounder was the offer. What’s noting the rock? Just curious. You’re so wrong, but yet you keep thinking you’re right. It’s the cutest thing.

Your wrong it's okay to be wrong... Again I love Watson and I'd love to have him, now with your infinite knowledge please tell me how we would plan on keeping him vertical.

We are coming off of one of the most boring reboots of a team in order to have a CHANCE of drafting a future star at QB, and the closest we got was the #8 pick. If we have to sell the farm in order to get a sure-fire Top 5 QB who has proven himself, you do it. For those worried about it setting us back, we’re already in the set back position with no truly competitive team and the #8 to show for it. You get the elite QB and trust your organization can build around him even after what you give up. You’d have to have that same trust in them to build even if you didn’t have him.

The Packers (which one would consider not the best run franchise, but no where close to the worst), screwed with a RD1 pick and selected a backup while having the soon-to-be MVP QB under center they pissed off while doing so. You might easily deem that to be one of the largest wastes of a 1st round pick. And the franchise suffered all the way to ARod leading them to the NFC Championship. THAT is how important having THE guy is. Three first rounders is nothing for that type of guy. We’re in year two of a rebuild not five. If we have to start from scratch again, that’s what we do, because we’ll be starting with a much more proven and higher ceiling.

From Aaron Reiss, Texans reporter for The Athletic...

Where could Watson land?
Reiss: Only where he wants, as the $156 million contract extension he signed before the start of this season possesses a no-trade clause. A limited number of suitors could drive down the price for Watson in the trade market, but so long as there is more than one bidder, the Texans should still be able to flip him for a huge haul of assets.

What's next for the Texans?
Reiss:
Team officials are adamant that they do not want to trade him, so McNair, Caserio and Culley will try to repair the Texans' relationship with Watson. But if they don't make progress toward that by the 2021 NFL Draft, the team will face a big decision: Deal Watson and begin the rebuilding process with a ton of high picks, or wait until the season to see if Watson is willing to exercise his only leverage, which is sitting out games.

If he is indeed willing to give up game checks, the Texans will have to wait until the following offseason to deal him. Trading him at midseason, when they won't know the slots for the 2022 first-round pick(s) they'd be receiving, is the worst-case scenario.

This doesn't sound like something that's gonna be over quickly.

Vernon Butler is a late round pick who is a starter for a AFCG team, He had 7.5 sacks his last season here and was foolishly not tendered, Hardly a bust for the 30th pick of the draft....  Also Joe Thomas retired 7 months late HARDLY worth a first rounder.

Butler had zero sacks this season.

BILL BARNWELL:

Panthers send: Eighth and 39th overall picks in 2021, 2022 first-round pick, 2023 first-round pick, QB Teddy Bridgewater
Texans send: 2022 third-round pick, 2023 fourth-round pick, QB Deshaun Watson

The Panthers probably aren't in position to get the quarterback of their dreams at No. 8, which means they'll either need to trade up a few spots or make a massive deal for Watson. This would be a dramatic move for Matt Rhule and new general manager Scott Fitterer, but Carolina was frustrated with Bridgewater by the end of the season and might be inclined to swap draft capital for a long-term solution at the most important position in sports.

The Panthers would send their next three first-round picks and a second-rounder to the Texans, who also would get a year of Bridgewater at $18 million before having to decide whether to move ahead with him in 2022 for $21 million.
