I may need a throat punch, cause part of me thinks theres a chance at a KK return...Hes got close to 20 milion in base salary for 2021. Change that into a signing bonus and add 4 years with minimum salary. KK would return for 6 million cap number in 2021. Panthers do need a running mate for Brown. With injuries and such, 6 million per seems fair. 0% chance happening, could cut him after 2 years with little issues tho. I may also need a baseball bat to the head too....

Bold statement, but creative thinking.

Nah. He is done. There is no reason to keep him around. Kerr was a fine replacement.

Yup, and use the cap savings from dumping KK to extend Kerr (final year).  That way we have Brown, Roy and Kerr under wraps for the next few years.  Either we attempt to turn Obada into a full-time 3-tech and/or draft a 3-tech...at any rate, the interior DL will be set for the foreseeable future.

Nah. We need to draft a guy still. Roy is a backup, Kerr is a journeyman that will need to get replaced eventually. Still are gonna need 2-3 DT's in the next two offseasons.

Kerr graded out very highly this past season when healthy.  Injuries/Covid curtailed what could have been a really nice year overall.  We could extend him now, say 2-years, based off his past deal rather than him breaking out in 'contract year play' and then potentially being too pricey when he hits FA.  His current contract is a $1.5M average.  I'd be willing to extend him at that price now, especially after the promise he showed.

We generally only keep 4 DTs on the 53 man roster along with a DE that is able to move inside.  We currently have that with Efe.  I agree we need a starting 3-tech to replace KK, but really if we keep Kerr and Efe in the fold, that's all the team really is lacking.

I like Kerr but he is also 30 years old. I have no issue keeping him around be we still need to draft for the future.

Designating Paradis and Short as post June 1 cuts along ditching Weatherly & Palardy frees up nearly $30M in cap space.  Add that to the $12M in current cap space and we are looking at roughly $42M heading into FA.  That's not too shabby.  If Fitts spends wisely, we can finally dig out from the mess Hurney kept us in.

What if KK restructured and took a big pay cut knowing he may not get a decent new deal from someone else? He's a great guy (locker room and community presence) and 2018 was not his fault (Washington was the DC). He's got some thread left as he's rested the last 2 years.

I'm not a cap guru but if it is possible to rewrite all of Short's 2021 salary including roster and workout bonuses into a league minimum salary (roughly $1 million rather than $14.5 million), I would offer him that. It would drop his 2021 cap hit to about $7.5 million, saving us +$13 million this year and then we're left with the roughly $4.5 million of dead cap in 2022 that was part of the restructure. It would be a way to free up even more cap this year without waiting until June and gives you a former pro bowl DT to at minimum mentor the young guys and if he can stay healthy, get some snaps at a position which we need bodies. If he wants anything more, I would let him walk. Since he basically hasn't played in 2 years and most teams are cap strapped with the diminished 2021 cap, he probably wouldn't get much more as a free agent. He may decide he'd rather take the $1 million, rather than uproot his whole life to make maybe a million more elsewhere. Either way, we have all the leverage.

    • Adonai Mitchell has potential for sure, but from what I've gathered he isn't as physical as you'd think for his size, and like some of the others (including even Coleman), he can be rerouted by physical corners who press him.
    • I think this is what got me thinking about it. When you have the worst record in football, you have problems on all fronts. The obvious first step in correcting that is changing out coaching staff. Defense was far from perfect, but it was also far from the biggest issue. I think we made corrections there where needed. Then comes the personnel. It's not just improvements in talent that is needed, but you want a fresh start on the identity. You keep too much of the losing team, you risk keeping the same losing mind  may have contributed to it. You need major upheaval and turnover. I still remember not having a great team when hurney was around when they bragged about keeping 20 of 22 starters or whatever it was. I think I was just surprised seeing just how drastic and massive it was in one snapshot. I've been watching it all happen, but spread out over a couple weeks it didn't strike me how big it really was.
    • Rods got them practicing again before they fly up to Canada. Hopefully he’ll do a Monday lite and a Wednesday practice while the boys have the 4 day break. We got Boston twice, the blues and Caps once, the other 4 remaining games are teams not making the playoffs but looking to play spoiler. We also end the season with a 4 game road stretch.    We have 1 more back to back after the 4 day break and we also have a 2 day break between bruins game 2 and the blues during our last 4 road stretch.    Rags have 4-5 games against wildcard hopefuls left but no more for sure playoff teams.
