I wish Watson the best but thats wayyyy to much for 1 player. Id rather build through draft and trade up for Lawrence or Fields than to have to get rid of our future that much.

So trade up and give up probably almost the same amount capital for an unknown. Doesn’t sound smart to me.

Someone is going to trade a ridiculous amount for Deshaun Watson, that is going to happen. Jay Cutler got two 1sts, Khalil Mack got two 1sts, Laremy Tunsil got two 1sts, and Deshaun Watson is 10x the value of all those players. I already made a big long post on why it is worth it, and I stand by that.

It really looks bad on paper, but in the grand scheme of things, Watson is the perfect QB to trade for--not old, proven, local--whatever the cost on paper, the benefit is tremendously obvious to me.

So far, I am very impressed with Rhule's ability to develop the bottom of the roster.  Look who played fairly well in their first NFL season (to speak of):  Larkin, Roy, Hartsfield, Franklin, R. Smith, Cannon, Pride, Colin Thompson,  etc. In addition, look at the role players that were developed and played well (something Rivera was not known for): Elder, Obada, Carter.

So can we overcome the loss of some draft picks and a few good players?  Yes---with the cap in 2022 as it is, we can.

While some are looking at this as "selling the farm", we could look at it as getting rid of some expensive contracts.  What if we have $130m in cap room next year?  We may not miss the draft picks that much and we can replace the veterans we loss, if we shop wisely.

Last year, after drafting Brown, we grabbed YGM, Chinn, and Pride on days 2 and 3.  Not bad.  If you consider that the 2022 pick is worth a second rounder, and that about 55% of first rounders become solid starters....it looks worse on paper than it is.

trading up for Lawerence would cost almost as much as getting Watson.  Watson being the actual proven QB.

If it were possible to trade up for Lawrence I think we would be trying to do that, first and foremost.

I've mentioned this before in many other threads... wherever DW lands... his contract will be restructured and extended. The current contract was a deperation contract by the Texans. DW can still get the same amount of money and not have such a cap impact.

I believe DW may be the first qb to take on a standarized contract.

It's easy for you and I to negotiate millions of dollars away from contracts, since they are pretty imaginary for us. For guys who actually have contracts that pay out $35 million, they may be a bit more reticent to waive those earnings in the effort to be a good guy.

Recap:

1. Texans contract w/ DW is ironclad, he's locked up thru 2025.

2. There is no scenario where Texans are better off without DW vs. with him.

3. Texans have no obligation to trade DW.

4. Texans won't trade DW.

5. DW does not have the stones to walk from $146,540,000.

The End.

I'll just say the DW can show up and make that $$$ for little effort.  If McNair and the Texans want to make his life miserable he can go half ass it with that kind of money to be made.

Is that being professional?  No.  Is it giving McNair and the Texans the same amount of respect they are showing him?  Yes.

its not the amount, its how it is dispursed. Watson could get it all gauranteed and have it dispursed differently and be more cap effiicient... hence the standardization. His pay would grow every year, and never impact the team's planning or overall cap.

Here's the deal. I still think pursuing Watson is a bad idea. It's like being at a used car lot and telling them, nope it's just too much money for a car I really shouldn't buy. The next thing you know, everyone comes out of the woodwork to explain how we can afford it by jiggling the numbers, getting some easy financing, put some additional money down now to ease it up later. And yet, it still comes down to it being a used car, with some very rough mileage (sure, it is just a couple of years old, but...) with long-term payments that I'm saddled with. Sure, it looks fancy, it'll impress the neighbors and all the other people want it sooo bad...

I'm just not buying it. I get a bad feeling about it and what it will do for me (or won't) down the road.

The offer sounds crazy but its probably really not that off.

All along I've thought the over/under from us would be something like three 1st and 2 players.

His offer is pretty much two 1st and 3 players, with 2 later picks.  Of the 3 players none are Burns so that is a plus.

People need to realize that if this was to happen its going to hurt.  If you are comfortable with what you are giving up for Watson you probably need to add to it.

    • LOL, yeah UNC/ACC bet on the “wrong horses” in VT and Miami.  Good take.
    • I don't know who the fug Dan Wolken is but he ain't wrong.  Hubert has to get over his hero ball obsession. If that means RJ can't come back for a 5th year so be it. But the man is so obviously reliant on a "go-to guy" and he absolutely cannot adapt on the fly when the designated go-to guy is having an off night. His TEAM was red hot in the first half but his entire 2nd half game plan delivered around getting his go-to guy going and his go-to guy gunned us right out of the game.
