My mind is prepared for Darnold to be hot rancid trash but my body is ready to be wrong

Yeah, I don't mind eating crow but I really dread the scenario where we are all-in on Darnold and he still remains....Sam Darnold.

I don't want to see that because I don't want to already lose faith in the FO and coaching staff.

Hence why I would be all-in on a QB at 8 if one is available. At least we have a very good hedge for that bet. Maybe you even end up with two good QB's.

Either he a steal or he's a complete bust .. Either way we didn't risk alot and could easily move on next season...

What make me more okay with this move is .. IMo it's going to be 1 extreme.. Either really good or really bad.. Which is better then being middle of the rode..

I still would have preferred to not have given up that 2nd rounder(which if he is a bust would be really nice to have). We gave up the equivalent of a late first round pick for him overall, so I guess it isn't the worst gamble in the world.

I just don't like that we had to resort to a guy that has such an unbelievably low floor. The history of these reclamation projects is pretty unkind overall.

I guess other than the "sugar or poo" outcome, we are also going to have a pretty strong idea of how good the coaching staff is, as well. If he shows that early first round talent here, Brady and Rhule can be lauded as the guys we need to get this rebuild accomplished. If he flames out, it's a pretty safe bet we will be headed towards having a new coaching staff in a couple of seasons.

Exactly..

Alot of question answered about the QB, The HC, OC and GM .. All for low risk of future paralysis... Add in the fact that they might even be able to improve to down spots on the team giving (if needed) a new QB a better team around him.

Giving up a 2nd round pick hurts but reality is.. Not as much as what I was really ready to give up for Watson, and Lawrence and maybe for Stafford,  , and Zac Wilson. ..

Yeah, and if he is a true disaster, we could be in position to draft a top 5 QB next season.

What I like the most about this trade is the fact we lose nothing this year other than a 6th round pick.  Since we have an extra 6th we have picks in every round this year to build a team behind him.  If we gave up a 2nd and 4th we lost 1/4 of our draft this year.

Options in the draft.

  • Take Rhule's preferred OT and build a great line for Darnold to work with.
  • If a QB is available
    • take him as insurance and competition for Darnold
    • Trade down with Chicago or New England or anyone who will trade and pick up an extra 1st in 2022.
      • If Darnold Fails we have 2 first rounders to use to move up and get Howell or the best prospect in the draft.
      • If Darnold is solid we have 2 first to add more help and replace players that we cannot afford.  This trade would also offset the lose of the 2nd rounder we gave up for Darnold.
  • Take Pitts or another offensive weapon to help Darnold
  • Solidify our defense with another stud at LB or DB (no D-line worthy of a top 8 pick)

The only people saying this was a horrible trade are the folks who would find the negative in free ice cream.

It's an average trade that's being referred to pretty much everywhere as a fair trade.

They are the products of their environments.  The were not breast fed.

I think we have to make up that 2nd rounder for the reasons you provide.  But trading Teddy will recoup the 4th and 6th, and if we move back a bit at some point, we could recoup the second.  If so, then the Teddy for Darnold swap was good for us because we get rid of a lot of TB's salary AND we still have our 1st rounder that we did not spend on a QB

I really want that to happen, but I would hate missing out on Sewell or Slater. I'm not sure if getting one of the big uglies would indicate that we're intellectually all-in on Darnold as much as it simply says we'd be taking the BPA.

On an off note, If Pitts or Chase is there and we pick one of them over Sewell or Slater, I don't believe that's necessarily an indicator that we're all-in on Darnold either.

why would anyone be against him?  You are right--he has a chance, and with the exception of Mr Pecker massage, all other candidates would too.  At least we did not send anyone 3 firsts for a bust.

Lot of people have been expressing very anti-Darnold sentiments. 🤷‍♂️ They’re a mix of people that are just weary from having to watch Teddy last year and trolls.

Nice piece but I'll bet 8 bit coins that this guy's full of shizz and zero chance he competes with Teddy. Teddy gone.  Sam has been historically bad. Now enough of my negative Nancy. Some pundits as well as some of you fools have at least made me see the hope in this move. Joe Brady either is a head coach next year or an actual goat. If Sam is worse than Teddy the QB whisperer montage may be true. Problem being he should have spoke up. No one could hear him! Gonna give Sam a shot before talking shizz about him again because even my opinion matters somewhere in this universe or maybe a multiverse.

Career #'s are no better than what Teddy's was last year when he came to us. The problem with this whole thing is we are once again banking on a guy to become something he has never been. Just like we did with Teddy last year. Part of that problem is we are essentially getting a rookie Qb without the 4 year + option year contract which is actually really valuable.

This is my problem with this franchise and the decisions they made to put us into this position and I just can't ignore the fact we allow a former NFL MVP, proven franchise Qb to walk out of the door so we can constantly sign retreads and pray to the football Gods they transform into a player they have never been before and are pretty much no longer on a rookie deal. Instead of you know, giving the guy one season to see if HE can still be the player we needed him to be but yet here we are.  One year after the decision to move on from Cam and this is the position we find ourselves in, in the exact same position as last year with a new FA addition at Qb with no solid plan in place to get better at the position we are essentially throwing poo at the wall to see if it sticks. Yikes. What if we pass on a Qb at 8 and Darnold turns out to be TB 2.0? What a poo show this will turn out to be.

But anyways the past is the past best of luck to Darnold he legit has every opportunity to succeed here, just like TB did last year. Hopefully he can come in and be better than he has been in the NFL thus far but I won't be holding my breath.
