I think that's what they want to do.  Move some money forward into this year if they can get Teddy off the books.

Why? There is no reason at all to give him 19M before he takes a snap. None. No matter when you pay it. It still won’t be there when they want to sign FAs. Or extend Moton, Moore, Burns.

that’s what? 15 mil a season?

More sense than just actually seeing if he improves any before handing him another 20M. This is the thinking that rationalized Teddy’s deal as a good one.

Makes sense because trading 3 draft picks, including a second, for the youngest qb ever to start in the NFL who will clearly need more time than one year to show anything.

With this logic Allen would’ve been cut in Buffalo after his first year.

If he shows promise and you don’t pick up the 5th year, you have 2 options a tag or a new contact that will be 1. Longer than just one more year and 2. Probably much more expensive. If he improves you won’t just be ‘handing him 20 million’, since the option has to be taken before the season, you’ll be offering him more than that.

So yea, logically it makes the most sense. If you’re already investing draft picks, do it right, the picks were more valuable than the cap.

Trading a second rounder for a 1 year 23 year old former top five pick on a 1 year rental is just dumb.

What would be the worst case scenario if we don't pick it up?

Darnold balls out and, despite having $3 trillion in free cap next season, we get outbid by another team.

Even in this scenario, we get a 3rd comp pick back. At that point we paid about 2 day 3 picks for one season of play.

IMO, you either have him play out the rookie deal as motivation to get better. Or, you sign him 3+ years in the hopes he improves and you get a few years of quality QB play on the cheap. No point in splitting the middle.

Here's the report that said we picked up his option.

Not long after Adam Schefter at ESPN reported that the team is trading three draft picks to the Jets for Sam Darnold, Jonathan Jones at CBS Sports reported that Carolina will in fact exercise Darnold’s fifth-year option.

It definitely makes the most sense to at least wait until the draft. If we draft a qb at 8, it doesn't make much sense to have him sit behind Darnold for 2 years or pay Darnold nearly $20 million to be a backup in 2022. If we don't draft a qb at 8, I do think we'd be a bit obligated to pick up the 5th year option. You don't make an evaluation on a guy that he's worth a 2nd round pick plus change and worry he'll be damaged goods after 1 year. The 5th year option is a huge bargain for a decent starting qb. And as others have said, we probably need more than a year in our system to truly find out Darnold's potential. If he's still not the answer in year 2, we did our homework and can confidently move on with no additional commitment. But if he shows some potential next year but has his ups and downs (which is the most likely scenario) what do you do? Give up or pay him a Teddy-esque contract and hook yourself for a couple years? That's the last place we want to be again.

He’s already had 3 years in the NFL. What reason would any team have to give him two years to prove himself? So if he’s his usual below average to average self, you still want to be tied to him with 19M guaranteed. Just like they are now.

And how does this relate to Allen in any way? The Bills didn’t guarantee him another 19M after his rookie year. Darnold has 3 years of subpar play. Nothing similar at all.

So giving him 19M, based on his body of work so far, is better than waiting and probably spending less than that for the first year of a contract if he actually becomes good? Tannehills was 22.5M his first year of new contract. Does it make fiscal sense to commit to 19M to save 3.5M, or wait and see.

What happens when Darnold is the same player he has always been? Then folks will wonder why the Panthers still don’t have a decent QB going into next year. But will have 24M tied up in the position anyway. But I’m sure things will be alright. Just be positive like with Teddy.

    • I know you’re upset about today’s UNC loss, but if you insult my team I’m coming back at you… VT Football has won the ACC football title FOUR times, including in their 1st year. VT Basketball won the ACC title in 2022 and we beat UNC and Duke in the process. Miami has some huge creds too, so I don’t understand why you’d suggest those programs are dragging down the ACC either.  They aren’t.  The ACC needs to get out of it’s own way.
