Not just Patrick Mahomes. The last four NFL MVPs:

  • Rodgers - sat three full seasons.
  • L. Jackson - sat 9 weeks. Started due to injury to Flacco. Though to be fair he played in every game in certain packages.
  • Mahomes - sat 16 weeks. Only played in Week 17 because KC was locked into the fourth seed and resting starters.
  • Brady - sat 17 and half weeks. Started due to injury to Bledsoe. The rest, as they say, is history.

Even if we pick Fields, it might be a great idea to let him sit for a while and learn while Darnold plays.

All four of those guys were also picked by pretty good teams with established starters at their position.

Ahh I forgot TD was a safety at first. Yeah we can get a QB later, they just have a MUCH smaller chance of working out and we would be drafting one just to do it. The whole point is that IF a top one falls to 8, we shouldn’t hesitate. Verge had a great post about the success of QBs taken past round one in the past decade. It was heavily favored by First Rounders. I think Dak might be one of the rare ones that is a great QB taken after round one in that past decade.

The FO might feel different about hesitating due to not liking whichever QB falls. At the start of last season people talked about Fields being 1B to Lawrence's 1A. Since the season ended, he has slipped down boards for some reason. The most I've seen against him is the college he went to and something about processing speed. There might be more that I've missed. Lance went to a small school and played against lesser competition. He is also supposed to be raw. Wilson has injury concerns and only one really good year from what I've seen. Jones is supposed to be a product of his school and the talent around him. All have question marks and most of them probably wouldn't be top ten picks in any other year. This year is just the perfect storm for QBs. I've said I prefer taking a tackle as that is a huge hole that has needed to be addressed for a long time. I wouldn't be mad if the Panthers take a QB, but I would be disappointed as I feel tackle is a bigger need. I would feel the same if they take a CB, WR, or Pitts over Slater or Sewell if they are there.

Every first rounder has a greater chance of success than later picks. That's why those guys are in the first round.

No he’s not. He’s a bum. He’s been in the league 3 years. Name me a damn player that turned into something different after 3 years in the league. He is who he is. A backup QB.

If I read the news article correctly, the Jets are 0-10 when he's been injured.

Whether he turns into a guy we can build a franchise around is another matter, but he's clearly a talented player who elevates the play of those around him.

Oh yeah it’s 100% up to our front office on how they feel about these prospects. The link I saw stated they “love” Fields and “like” Jones. My only point has been Darnold shouldn’t stop them from taking a QB they are high on IF they fall to us at 8.  Agreed on the first round picks, but it’s amplified with QBs. Outside of Dak has their been one outside of the first that’s a solid starter in the past decade? I know there are always exceptions, but the odds are not in their favor.

Fans talk about smokescreens FAR more than teams actually do it, I'd bet.

I strongly doubt the Panthers, a week or so before the draft, are still wasting time and resources like sending Brady to a pro day for a prospect they aren't actually interested in.

There's also that guy in Tampa.

9 years ago in 2012. Sweet. Although we do have the GM that may have been part of it.... 🤔

Tom Brady was drafted way before the last decade.

I was thinking he was over a decade ago. Seems like he has been there forever!

That I can understand, but yeah, 2012.

As far as others taken outside the first, Derek Carr is probably the best.
