Panthers 2020 Offensive Line Ranked 18th of 32

Final 2020 offensive line rankings | NFL News, Rankings and Statistics | PFF

18. CAROLINA PANTHERS

The Panthers haven’t had any disastrous efforts along the offensive line this season, but they also don’t have all that many players to highlight. The clear choice for the best player along their line this season is right tackle Taylor Moton, who enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent along with the majority of the Panthers’ starters on the line.

Moton has delivered three straight seasons of quality play as the starting right tackle for Carolina, but his career-high PFF grade of 81.2 this season — third among qualifying right tackles — came thanks to his run-blocking grade catching up to what he’s been able to do in pass protection throughout his career. Moton’s 76.3 run-blocking grade in 2020 was nearly 10 points higher than his previous career-high mark of 67.4 in 2019.

Offensive linemen often don’t get the recognition they deserve because it’s a difficult position to evaluate — one without readily available statistics to pull up in seconds. That's why the PFF play-by-play grading gives us a unique perspective regarding offensive line play, as it separates the play of the offensive line from the play of the quarterback it is protecting or the runner it is blocking for.

Using those grades as a guide, this is where each team’s offensive line stacked up during the 2020 regular season, with the important caveat that this list is meant to reflect how each group played this season rather than serve as a projection of future performance or talent.

Interesting that Daryl Williams (now with Carolina North) had a nearly identical grade to Moton last year.

Despite the grade, I still believe we need a LT and some competition on the interior.  Playoff teams really need to top 10 line play.

In comparison the Jets' offensive line was 29th in the league. Huge step u for Darnold but still  not that great.

Overall, however, it was a disappointing season for the offensive line for the Jets. They allowed pressure in 2.5 seconds or less on 28% of their drop backs — the worst rate in the NFL. The line wasn’t creating many lanes in the run game, either. The Jets averaged just 1.1 yards per carry before contact per rushing attempt in 2020 (30th).

Easy to see why QB Sam Darnold had issues, considering  this dismal  Jets offensive line. The rookie they Jets draft this year will have the same problem unless their offensive line is upgraded.

The biggest problem on the OL was horribly inconsistent play at Left........Guard.  Once that position is addressed, the LT and C will improve.

LT was bad, but there were times when the LG should have picked up an inside move and he was staring at a LB.  He gave up A gap a bunch--golden rule of OL play--A gap is off limits for DTs.  Yet Reed got beat in A gap.

So on the right side, Miller, Paradis, and Moton should have solid communication and know each other.  On the left side, we are going to have new faces.

Frankly, the OL as a group is tough to rank because it depends on the QB and his release time.  If Teddy was checking down quickly, they look better than they were.

The oline wasn’t that bad. Teddy just sucked.

Funny because when cam’s oline averaged better throughout his career no one seemed to say his oline was never that bad for his career;

2011 - 7th

2012 - 27th

2013 - 7th

2014 - 22nd

2015 - 2nd

2016 - 17th

2017 - 10th

Avg: 17th

2018 - 17th (doesn’t matter limited playing)

Avg: 17th

2019 - 8th (doesn’t matter no playing)

Hmmmmm by saying the oline wasn’t that bad and TB just sucked I wonder what this means for the oline over cam’s career?

Probably a good idea to know what you’re looking at.

Considering almost no one goes to the super bowl or even deep playoffs without a top ten oline in the past two decades, yea 18 is pretty bad.

Probably need to understand that before saying 18 isn’t that bad. There is not a lot that separates the bottom tier olines in football (big drop off). It’s ironically like saying TB didn’t rank that bad last season altogether. Except when you realize you need an above average QB to really go anywhere. Oline is just as, actually even more, important.

Lastly if you have a stud like Moton, it skews things. For some teams losing 2-3 olineman make or break them, for the Panther’s, it’s just one near perfect player/anomaly keeping us above water. One. Out of 5. That’s bad.

Sorry but 2020 was a result of TB and the Oline playing like garbage aside from Moton. And cam had a garbage oline average as well.

Because they're always picking first or somewhere around there, they fall for the hype too often. Teams traditionally in the back of the draft have to do their homework.

I'd be ok with 2 of our top 3 picks being offensive linemen. Imagine us adding both Penei Sewell and Creed Humphrey to protect Darnold.

Sorry but the line is garbage outside of moton. The whole left side needs to be fixed,  i thought miller and moton were pretty good on the right but even miller had rough stretches when i go back and watch.  He is just outside of back up material. I just can't in anyway imagine one of the first 2 picks isnt LT, then i actually go o line again in the second and shoot for a OG/C. When you really look at the offense, OG is the next biggest need after LT is taken care of.

Humphrey

Meinez

Dickerson

One of these guys can play guard this year and move over to center next year when paradis is gone. Kinda of killing 2 birds with one. I would even look in the later rounds for somebody like aaron banks if still around it would be great value. My big issue is while line was serviceable at times it was missing toughness and the guys we signed in the off season is not gonna cut it. A lot of guys in this draft would fix that.

Even if Sewel is not around at 8 we can take the next best tackle who can excel at run and pass protection in grabbing Darrisaw from VT and then hope either Little or Slater would be around in the 2nd round.  Little by most pro scouts would be the better guard in the NFL due his lack of size and strength although his quickness would be a huge asset as a LG in the NFL.  The Left side could be set for years.

    • I’m all for double dipping at WR with our 2 first pick. Our offense needs to be the main priority this draft.
    • I can’t recall the source or time but I’d swear that sometime around one of Tepper’s tantrums, he supposedly asked, rhetorically, "what have they/he done to my team” and I think he was referring to Fitterer.  I can’t find the quote. IMO I get why they moved CMC, but the DJ Moore thing was inexplicable considering how much help he might have offered.
