Interesting quote on Sam Darnold from the Athletic article grading all QB’s in this draft class

Also from another Athletics article:

In three seasons with the Jets, Darnold has had trouble staying healthy, protecting the ball and not getting sacked. He is 13-25 as a starter and has only nine games of throwing for more than 8 yards per pass attempt. In 16 of those games he did not throw an interception, and in 12 he threw only one.  In his 38 starts, Darnold has been on the ground 98 times; 723 of his passing attempts have occurred when his team was losing, as have 25 of the 39 interceptions thrown. The point is that Darnold played badly, but he was often playing from behind.

By choosing Wilson, Douglas must believe Darnold won’t play well if the Jets are in front, either —  though when you examine the numbers, Darnold shined with the lead. When the Jets were ahead, Darnold threw 19 touchdowns, eight picks and averaged 7.57 yards per attempt with a 94.4 quarterback rating, well above his career 78.6 average. It’s easy to say that Darnold is the reason the Jets were always behind, but that is not accurate. Douglas can say he wants to start anew, but he’d better hope that Wilson plays as well as, if not better than, Darnold when the Jets are actually in front.

You have to take risks to get what you want. Risks always involve the unknown. You gamble on the odds, making the best decisions you can.

We had no franchise QB. So, what do you do? If you feel none that you're interested will fall to you in the draft and the one in the NFL (Watson) that you thought might be that answer ends up compromised, you've got to be creative and venture off the beaten path.

Getting a QB from a historically dysfunctional organization with poor coaching that provided no protection for the young player - a player that has shown he has tools - while only spending modestly to acquire him is about the best you could hope for, given the overall set of circumstances.

Of course he could flop. He may never develop. But what if he ***does***?!? There are sufficient reasons to believe that is a possibility.

The risk to reward dynamics of the decision are sound imho.

Donald is as huge of a risk as any of the top 4 rookies coming out. He has some seriously bad habits and he may improve them or not. Projecting hope doesn't actually improve the situation.

The facts are he was at least option D for us. He has some serious issues and has not had a good coaching situation. Bad habits are very difficult to unlearn after years of negative reinforcements. He has a much better physical toolset than Teddy but Teddy has a much better brain.

Build it up all you want but it's still a huge gamble. Not the investment but in actually getting a QB worth playing. At this time it is a MAYBE until proven otherwise. We should still add a QB and then it would show competence in team building from the staff that they understand more than the all knowing sports journalists and random & unknown 'expert'.

My huge and known positive is he isn't Mac Jones lol. I'll take that all day.

if you look at our 2nd round draft history you will see more misses than hits. I’ll risk that for a chance to get a 23 year old who could be your answer at QB.

Most of our existence as a franchise has been with Hurney as our GM. I’m going to assume that with Fitt we will see a massive upgrade in how our drafts play out.

Those of us that could think logically and didn’t throw a tantrums said as much. I said 3-4 times that Darnold would be the 2nd QB taken in this years draft if he was in it.

He might not be a league MVP ever but he’s absolutely capable of being another Jake and given us 28 TDs a year. Everyone saying he should have done better with the Jets are being a bit short sighted and we’re too emotionally attached to drafting a QB.

Only thing going for the kid,he is young.

If Belichick was his coach he would still throw more picks than TDs like he did last year.

Highly doubtful that is true, given he has more TDs than INTs in his career and only one season with more INTs.

Not sure he will be the all star we all want as our QB of the future, but it is extremely likely he plays better next year than last.

Sounds like it’s you deeming yourself all knowing by simply stating if they don’t do what you want them to do in the draft then they are incompetent at team building, and which again I find odd when Huddlers or any fanbase fancies themselves more qualified than career coaches and scouts.

Maybe he won’t work out. Same can be said for Mac Jones and Trey Lance. One cost us a 2nd. One would have cost us a 1st and possibly more. That already shows an acumen for team building in itself.

    • I don't think the tag "disappointing" is fair for Schoony and Meyer as rookies. They both had to play beside a volume WR sucking up touches (top 2 in the league in targets).  Schoony was the #2 TE behind Ferguson, so tough to be impactful as a rookie - Mayer barely played till week 5 and got hurt and missed the last 3 games, not to mention playing with a rookie QB.  So once again - context matters alot.   That said I believe there is 1 stud, 1 high potential overpay, and 3 big value TE's in the draft - Bowers may be Kelce so probably worth 1st round value.  Sanders is getting a bit overhyped with his potential so he might go earlier than he should.  I think we should be looking to snag Sinnott, Wiley, or Stover - my preference is Sinnott but Wiley could be there in rounds 4-5 or later and could be well worth it. RB I definitely think Chubba is underappreciated - again context!  Our OLine was horrendous and he averaged 3.8 Y/A!!!  I mean come on - dude easily lost 0.3 at least on those idiots.  But that said his pass catching and pass blocking were pretty poor most of the year also.  An upgrade would be great, but I tell ya, with the RB market as it is now where I can get Sequan for $12.5M, I am NEVER drafting a RB above round 4 unless he is the next CMC.....just go to the FA market and find some pocket change in your couch and get a top 5 RB.  We just screwed that up with Sanders.  But the guys in the 3-5 round range could be OK....there isn't a top tier RB in this draft IMO.  I would sit it out this year on RB unless you can get a decent guy who falls far.....Sanders and Chubba are likely better then most anything in the draft.
    • A great weight loss tip is to move around constantly. Even if you aren't doing much, studies have shown that people who can't keep still tend to be thinner. Therefore, you should take every opportunity to move. If you are sitting at a computer for hours, stand up and walk around every hour or so. Having a weight loss buddy can help you get and stay motivated as you progress on your weight loss journey. A close family member or a friend that also wants to become more healthy keeps you from slacking off. Not only can you motivate each other, but you can talk to each other about your struggles and help come up with solutions for them. Nuts are one of the best foods that you can consume to reduce your hunger and cravings. Instead of going out for fast food, drive to the grocery store and purchase a can full of nuts. There is a wide selection of nuts to choose from and they are very tasty and filling.
