This was an exceptionally weak LT class and the BYU wasn't exactly a top tier prospect at LT.

If he ends up as a starting OG and a good one, I am fine with that. IMO, he doesn't have the skill set to be a very good NFL LT. I am fine being wrong about that, if it makes the team better. I just don't think he is an NFL LT.

As much as we have ignored the OL line in recent years(this one included), I will just simply accept "above average" NFL caliber. It is better than what we have been fielding.

This regime has only been in power for 2 years. You cannot hold them responsible for past misdeeds.

Also, this regime got our line up to mediocre last year. Which was an improvement over past lines.

Now, over the last few days we've added talent again.

You can be all worse case you want. But this regime has given the rest of us some hope for the future.

This ain't your daddy's Panthers anymore.

Our line performed a mediocre to bad level in 2020, depending on the statistics and metrics that you look at. It's pretty similar in make up this year, with some potential upgrades and/or downgrades. I would expect LT to be much worse this year, and it's a coin flip on the OG's. If we can just scrape one decent starting OG out of the FA signings(highly, HIGHLY unlikely) or the draft(much, MUCH more likely), it's a step in the right direction. Last year's OL was so exceptionally bad when you went past our starting OL(which unfortunately we had to do all too often). That's what I have the most hope for improving this offseason. Perhaps we won't go from mediocre to horrific when one of our starters goes down with injury. Again, that is another area we can dramatically improve on if these offseason moves work out.

Still not convinced we have a FO or coaching staff that really places much value on the OL. Time will tell.

Ok, I give up. Lot's of people excited for what we have going. You? Not so much.

I get Jordan Gross vibes from Christensen i.e. a guy that looks like he's doing just enough to survive out there, but 60 minutes go by and you realise the DE hasn't done anything all game.

If he pans out I think he'll be a very solid Zone LT. I don't see him having the strength to move inside.

scouts have been saying for years they didn't understand why Notre Dame didn't throw to him more often. Most likely because it's Notre Dame and you Have To Play The Right Way At Notre Dame and That Means NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL or whatever dumb bullshit

when you get stuck in a role it's hard to break out of it.

I think this point is over looked. Just because you were not asked to do something, doesn’t mean you can’t do it. I think he will surprise people with his catching. Especially when they focus on getting by his blocking and he pulls off of a block for a reception.

We will see what they have in mind for him. I am just glad we have at least a couple of younger guys to try out rather than these wastebin JAGS they like to keep cycling through.

My bar is pretty low at this point, so if we can even get just quality two deep guys(something we haven't had consistently in a while), that's ultimately a win.

I know we seemed ahead of schedule because of how close so many games were last season but this roster is still pretty weak(especially in regards to depth) so I am still being patient with the process of rebuilding. I don't need us to be successful next year, I want to be successful in the long term and actually sustain it at some point.

I really can't help that you can't fathom that not thinking this was the best draft in Panthers history is possible. That's really basically a you problem.

I am not sure I would necessarily buy into the notion that Notre Dame doesn't have pass catching tight ends under Brian Kelly. He has had Kyle Rudolph and Tyler Eifert. I would say it's probably more so that they didn't view Tremble as that kind of player.

On the positive side, if you look at ND's track record under Kelly, they have put a lot of TE's in the NFL in general. So, they do have an established reputation as developing NFL caliber talent at the position.

We lost 8 games by 1 score or less and basically every bit of that was TB. The line performed well enough to win and the rankings have them in the middle of the pack and were never even remotely close to being as bad as the hyperbole always posted here.

If you look at the full spread of OL stats, that shows how they were, at best, a bottom half of the league unit. In certain cases, bottom quarter.

Keep in mind that ol checkdown Teddy and our scheme also masked some of the problems. Also keep in mind how rare it was for us to be starting the same 5 linemen in consecutive weeks.

Make no mistake, it was a pretty bad unit, although it had some pretty good individual contributors.

That is gonna have to improve because we have a QB that is far, far less comfortable with pressure in his face than Teddy was.

    • Hi Gang, after talking a look at the roster (I will post below because it has been updated) I no longer see (or think they see) OL as a need that MUST be addressed in the draft.  They added 2 starting guards, creating a starting and backup center (jury still out, I know), and a solid swing OT.  Behind that, they have former starter Brady Christensen and at least Cade Mays.  Most all NFL lines have areas they would like to upgrade, but if they can get Ickey balanced, this could be a very special OL.  This list represents a shift away from a prioritized need at Edge as well.  Based on Canales' comments, they are going to go with Clowney and Wonnum and develop players like DJ Johnson, Barno, Leota, and Chaisson.  Good plan.  It suggests that Canales thinks these players were not coached up or developed, but he would never say that.  Athletically, the OLB room is full of studs. I still think our biggest need is a solid WR and if I were the GM, I would take 2 in this draft.  But nobody on the Huddle is talking that much about the second and third biggest needs, imo.  So here is what I put together this morning for you hacks to attack (includes long term needs--to me, since most rookies do not produce immediately, it is stupid to draft a player based on immediate needs): Wide Receiver:  Johnson and Thielen, the top 2 WRs at this moment, are possibly in their final years.  Mingo was overdrafted and his performance has not matched expectations.  In my opinion, in a WR-deep draft, you grab 2 Wideouts.  Longterm:  You do not want to enter 2025 with Mingo, draft pick, Smith-Marsette, and Marshall (who may not be on the team by then).  In my view, you can take two and still find the essential depth pieces at ILB and CB. Cornerback Depth:  Of course, signing Dane Jackson to replace "Action" Jackson and re-signing Troy Hill is not enough, considering Horn’s injury history--and even if Horn stays healty--you need 3 starting caliber CBs and a nickel.  I think we have to proceed as if Dane Jackson is the only starting caliber CB without an injury history and Bootle is a roster fringe CB at best.  We need a CB who can start if necessary.  Longterm:  Horn is a huge question mark at this point, so we have to draft as if we are taking a developmental starter.  For this reason, I see a second rounder being spent on CB. Dane Jackson is not elite by any means, and if we do not get pass rush this season, the secondary will be exploited. Troy Hill is 33 and this is obviously his last season here.   Inside Linebacker Depth:  With only Thompson and Jewell with Wooten behind them, ILB Depth is needed.  I fully expect Morgan to go after an ILB on day 2.  He understands their importance to a defense.  I am assuming the new kickoff rule may make LBs more valuable as well. Longterm: Jewell was just signed to a 3-year deal, but I doubt Shaq is back, having just signed a 1-year deal at age 30 for 2024.  We will be signing an ILB early in this draft.  Morgan guarantees it (not really, but I bet he does) Tight End:  I think they feel that TE is “covered” for now, but if they can upgrade the position, they will.  In my estimation, they want to see what they have in Tremble; that suggests they do not think the TE position was used properly in 2023.  Pure speculation.  Sullivan flashed as a pass-catching TE, and Ian is a suitable #3 TE as a blocker, but I have not seen that much from him in that area.  The could add a TE to the room, but with three other needs that are more pressing, I am not sure they will add someone who helps them improve.  However, they want to surround Bryce with weapons, so a TE would kinda be necessary–See the Super Bowl–their TEs were pretty good. Longterm:  This team needs an Alpha TE, and if Tremble cannot be that guy, they will bring one in.  I do like some of the TEs later in the draft, however.  A player like Ohio State’s Cade Stover would be a nice addition.
    • It looks good so far but yes we thought last year was good too.  I don't really feel like the season is going to be about wins but more about "how" we play the game and more importantly how Bryce plays.  We're giving him a better cast than last year to see what we really have.  If we're terrible again, we can draft another QB.  I'd be excited winning 5 games to be honest but just hope we play well in the losses.  I mean I don't think we can get worse than last year anyway.
