seems like there's a lot of optimism.....

Darnold is going to be better.  His WRs will be better, his OL will be better, his defense will be better.  Running backs? better.  TEs? better.  Coaches? Better.

The hesitation that he was showing in the QB tape video is central to his problems.  Note early in the tape the 2 WRs are engaged in communication at the LOS and then run the same route.  Confused WRs kill QB accuracy--they vary speed, alter routes, etc. Play calling?  Terrible, from what I hear.  The OL?  pressure not from one area--from several.  Running backs?  Nope.  Defense?  Very Terrible.

I think, when he gets confidence and has 4-5 Stud Wrs, a stud RB, a better line----his confidence will improve and the hesitations will go away.  He will anticipate and throw it with authority.  He was 23 and human, expected to carry a terrible franchise.

We found a gem.   You will see.

I feel like things turned out fairly decent for us this offseason but not enough to say we are going to be  a guaranteed contender.

Things we have learned as the offseason has progressed.

1. It was pretty clear that Stafford was option 1A. with the 8th pick. We were trying to trade for him months before the draft. That should have tipped everyone off to the fact that we weren't impressed enough with any of the QB's outside of the first 3 who were clearly going to be gone by 8.

2. The fact that we traded for Darnold further provided proof that we didn't really covet Fields or Mac Jones all that much.

3. Sewell would have reportedly been the pick at 8 if available, leaving a huge need at CB still.

Had we landed Stafford, we'd still have holes at LT and CB.

Now we have a fairly large unknown in Darnold but at least got a stud CB to help solidify the defense. Still need a long term answer at LT too. The o-line as a whole looks average at best so that will be a big question mark.

Darnold has a fleet of weapons to work with, plus having CMC back should boost the offense a good bit. The defense plugged a major hole with Horn at CB and made some other upgrades this offseason.

I'm looking forward to see how things unfold but know better than to set unrealistic expectations.

Love the optimism and info backing it!

We’ll see. Y’all will find a way to blame Hurney. Always do, even when Gettleman was here.

They didn't do much in the way of house cleaning back then.

Rhule and Fitt deconstructed and reconstructed this team in a way that hasn't been done before. There are no carryovers that they didn't want  (except for maybe  little and a couple others on the OL) it's on them now.

Cap hit for Teddy is on hurney, but that's about it.

Of course it is.

What I like about it is that it was done so subtly that no one realized they were doing it until this draft ended with 11 picks and a 23 year old former 3rd pick at QB. In the last months I've even read posts by people complaining that we should be rebuilding the team instead of trying to win now which is wrong and will leave us as a middling team forever.

Yet, in reality, they made this team as competitive as they could in the first season, fixed our cap problem that we've suffered since what seems like forever, signed a lot of interesting FAs and brought in  a plethora of rookies at positions of need and creating what should be some challenging battles to make the 53 which should finally give us good depth on offense and defense.

By the end of this season we should know who has worked and who hasn't, keeping the good players and having lots of cap room to make even more improvements in FA and hopefully another solid draft. This team is now almost completely different than 2 years ago and it never felt like a rebuild. That's been a real joy to see even if I only recently realized it.

    • Any QB worth his weight in gold is going to get his guys the ball. Of course he has to have the protection, coaching and experience to do that. Moreover, it has yet to be determined what type of situation this is for a rookie wideout. The most important thing that will determine that is coaching.
