Rookie Camp - Day Two

Literally not long at all considering it was shared when we drafted him. He had more drops than TDs. He moved down the priority list at that point. Then they gave a true freshman an opportunity to catch passes and he was supremely better at it than Tremble so he became a backup backup backup plan catching the ball.

As far as comps and being rated higher than Kittle? Lots of guys are misrated coming out of college. He will not be Kittle. He will not be as good as Kittle. Book that. That doesn’t mean he will be awful but thats the reason why he not only fell in the draft but also fell on the Notre Dame depth chart.

Your kungfu here is the most lethal on the planet!! The new Tremble cult is already pissed about asking simple logical questions, they reached litterbox status in record time. God help us....

I’m not saying he is going to work out but I’m not sure if you can consider him an outlier if he got drafted close to where some teams had him ranked.

We will see how it turns out. I expect he will be a very good blocking TE/H-back and fill a role in that regard. The people expecting him to be a consistent pass catching threat are very likely to be disappointed.

That's what I meant by the "outlier" comment. The examples of outliers are easy to remember precisely because they are outliers. The averages don't work that way, however.

I guess we have to hope he is an outlier. If we somehow landed a class of outliers, then you have to consider the new FO and coaching staff to be hitting on genius level drafts. I am certainly perfectly happy if that is the case and my skepticism is unwarranted.

Im old enough to remember people calling Tony Pike -"Tom Brady 2.0"........The ones who disagreed were just hating, not his fault it didnt work out that way.... All 6th round QBs should be compared to the goat QB, it makes perfect sense!

Why stop there???-

Daviyon Nixon comp is Aaron darnold 2.2

Terrace marshall is Jerry Rice 3.1

Shi Smith is Steve Smith 8.9

Straight facts homie!11!!1!

Yeah, any of the guys past about the 4th round that stick around on the roster for even 3 years are basically a win. Not even as starters, just as depth guys. Statistically, that is a big win based on the history of the draft.

That's why I try and remind people to pump their brakes on a lot of this draft class. Don't come in here trashing them when they don't meet your unrealistic expectations. I feel the same way about Darnold and Horn. If Darnold is who he has been the past three years, you guys better be directing your vitriol towards Fitt and Rhule. Sam didn't trade for himself and he didn't draft himself. If Horn isn't a first or second year star, don't come in here trashing this kid when it often takes these rookie DB's a little bit of time(2-3 seasons) before they start hitting their stride.

Be patient and direct the butthurt where it should be directed.

Very true, Ive overrated past draft classes, so I know better. I do reeeeaaalllly like the finish haul and Ive labeled Moore and Brown as two 2022 OL with important roles. Dumb to place bets on a late 6th and a UDFA, but I can not deny it either. Sam has played AWFUL for three years, another fact that many hate to know. I do hope new environment, new coaches, new team-mates turn Sam into a SB MVP.

Plus one of my rules is no judgement on rookies unless they are cut or all-pros. I wait til the end of their 2nd full NFL off-season, best method and proven. That how patient I am and do the same for coaching staffs.

100% agree. I think it was pretty clear how poorly Troy Pride Jr. played last year but I am not gonna write him off until the end of his 2nd or 3rd season without obvious improvement. We have Josh Norman, James Bradberry or even to some extent Daryl Worley as recent examples if guys at the position that took a little time and experience before the light clicked on.

I am interested to see how the "spray and pray" draft method works with all these trades for lower round picks. I certainly hope that increases the chances of us getting more two deep players.

I agree with you that I'm not a fan of chasing exceptions.  Its a dangerous slope that usually ends up being a losing gamble.  My only point was I don't think his draft position was the reach that alot of fans thought.

In regards to the rest of the draft class I agree with your POV.

Rookie DBs struggle, look at Okuda and Henderson last year.

OTs often struggle, let alone one from the 3rd round, who might end up being a guard anyway.  How many good LTs are there in the league? 10-12.  Some of which are in their late 30s.  So in the last 15 years the league has only found 10-12 but we found one in the 3rd round?  I hope so but we have to be realistic.

I actually feel the best about Marshall, for whatever reason WRs seem to transition a little better recently.  Also he is going to be asked to be the 2nd or 3rd option.

Darnold I'm rooting for, but honestly players are usually what they are by this time in this career.  He definitely has tools, and I think he will be set up better for success here.  My big fear is he improves just enough for us to pay him a big contract but not really be elite.

I remember tom sorensen writing crazy articles about how baker was going to light the world on fire.....

You got me beat in the age department/follow/remember player, sad I think he pasted away not long ago. Soon after baker there was a looong run of pre-season WR MVPs..... Gettis got me and Adams did too far as me on the hype train.... Many Many others, Drew Carter era was one hell of a ride....

I am anxious to see RB Chuba Hubbard in action and hope he is all and more that Coach Rhule says he is.

If that is indeed the case, we may have gotten a steal drafting him in the 4th round  of the 2021 NFL Draft.

What about Beau Sandland and his amazing catches? Still can’t believe he never had a catch.

There’s being hopeful and then there’s people thinking we could get 7-8 contributors it of this draft. They may not realize that there’s only 22 starters and a handful of key contributors. Replacing 1/3 of those in one class is a wee bit crazy or it means we have had the worst injury year in a long time.

The evaluation process Rhule described today sounds really different from what we typically heard from Ron.  This was the best Rhule presser I've heard...he was just so focused and so beyond just normal coach-speak platitudes. Gave me a much better feel for him, and I liked what I heard.

Welcome back! I very seldom watch the pressers, although I will read the quotes that are thrown out there on social media. I decided to take your advice and watch the whole thing and was not disappointed. It's a whole new world that what we saw with Ron or Fox.
