so in effectively 12 seasons of play he amassed 19,500 all-purpose yards, holds the record for most all-purpose yards in a season, and is 6th all-time behind Frank Gore and ahead of Marshall Faulk.

I mean, of course he has more All-Purpose yards.  He returned punts and kicks for 14 years.  He doesn't even have 9,000 YFS.

Being good enough to return for 14 years says a lot, and he still had a role on his team's offenses during all that time as well.

No question about a guy like Luke who competed, even setting the performance bar, at a key defensive position. I'm just pointing out that Sproles had a very good career in his own right and accomplished quite a bit, putting him IMO rightfully in the conversation even if he's always an also-ran.

Yeah, he'll get in. First ballot wouldn't surprise me.

The only way I don't see Eli getting in easily is if somebody prominent vehemently opposes him (like King did with Monk).

Would probably be a Brady/belichick fan.

He has no place in any HoF discussion.

Rushing : 3552 yards 23 tds

Receiving : 4840 yards 32 tds

This is over 14 seasons, 183 games.

Nobody cares that he has yards as a return man. They allowed him to be a return man because he was not important enough to the offense, they did not care if he got hurt.

CMC in 51 games

Rushing : 3145 yards 29 Tds

Receiving : 2672 yards 16 TDs

I've seen arguments both ways.

Some point to the Sam Mills factor (Sproles was 5-6, maybe 170ish) and that despite being primarily a specialist he's in the top ten for overall yards in league history. Others say that utility players like Sproles don't get elected to the Hall of Fame.

Either way, King isn't necessarily saying he'll get in, just that he'll "get consideration". Significant though is that in ranking the chances of the first time eligible players for that year, he puts Luke behind only Vinatieri.

Worth remembering that King is a HOF voter.

Also kind of a dick about it (he fought to keep Art Monk out for years).

I had forgotten that he was one of them and a prick about it.

As a disclaimer here I grew up playing against Sproles, my team getting toasted by Olathe North year after year. I've followed his career if only due to that interest.

Sproles played for 3 teams in his 15-year career, so not a journeyman. He missed most or all of 4 seasons die to injury, so in effectively 12 seasons of play he amassed 19,500 all-purpose yards, holds the record for most all-purpose yards in a season, and is 6th all-time behind Frank Gore and ahead of Marshall Faulk. He's a 2x first-team All-Pro and was selected for the All-decade team.

Journeyman? Not even close. Hall of Very Good? Absolutely. HoF? On the fringe IMO, and there are guys who definitely get in first like King describes. Don't know if Darren gets there, esp  since Brian Mitchell hasn't. But Darren had a great career in his role, especially given his stature.

It was a joke. Calm down Karen. We all know he was a good spell back.

One of my favorite plays he ever made that I don't see mentioned much was against the Falcons in 2013.  He more or less ran Tony Gonzalez's route step for step and picked off Matt Ryan.  Ryan didn't even see him:

fuging beast that we were lucky to have the privilege to watch in Carolina.  If aliens came to Earth and for some reason wanted to know what the middle linebacker position in the NFL was about then Luke is it.

If that response truly comes across as not calm or 'Karen-ish' to you, then you live an easy life my friend.

I don't think it was not calm or a Karen post, but you are advocating for guys like Sproles and Mitchell?

This is not the NBA HoF where every decent player gets in. Those guys were basically return men who only got to see the field when the #1 RB got tired.  They have very low TD numbers and only have yards from returning kicks for an absurd number of seasons.

They did not have enough impact on the overall game to warrant a HoF nod. Nobody cares what size Sprolles was. If they are taking size into consideration Steve Smith is a first ballot guy, but they dont care what size a guy was. They care about the overall impact a player had on the game.
