Darnold's QBR was higher than Tannehill's

Darnold will surprise people if the offense can stay healthy and our OL can merely act like a fine sieve as opposed to a breached levee.  Let's not kid ourselves, this OL isn't going to be great, but even better than average would be welcomed.  Keeping Darnold upright and healthy will be key to any hope of success this year.

Will Darnold look better than he did last season? 100% absolutely I guarantee it. Better coaching, better scheme, better playmakers, better culture, better everything.

Will Darnold perform better than Teddy Bridgewater? That's a tough thing to predict. Bridgewater played well at times but mainly failed in the red zone and at the end of games. If Darnold can perform around the same as Bridgewater but deliver more success in critical situations, the Panthers could be a playoff team.

He could also be a colossal failure if his psyche is broken and the Jets truly ruined him.

They also both didn’t really start playing QB until junior year in high school. Darnold played WR and LB in high school, Tannehill WR and CB before taking over the QB spots their junior years. So both players were still new/raw to the position and had Adam Gase coaching them to poo early in their NFL years. There is definitely still potential there for Darnold. Hopefully our staff can coach him right and help undo the crap he saw at NYJ.

I've focused less on a question of his ability or his intangibles and more on the decision making. We know he was in an unfavorable position with the roster and the staff. He still didn't make the best decisions with the football and had issues fully reading the field at times missing receivers. The arm isn't a question. The drive isn't a question. The leadership isn't a question. Now the staff and surroundings are not a question as long as the line holds up. Whether or not he takes the next step in processing on the field is what will separate Darnold from the Panthers lengthy list of failed quarterbacks who had potential yet were unable to put it all together ultimately. In that aspect there is a very long list across the league of guys who couldn't do that despite their physical talents.

I agree, and would add two things.

QBR should reflect decision making to an extent.  If you are seeing the field, following your reads, hitting open receivers, not throwing ints, that is going to be reflected in a higher QBR.  I understand QBR is not a perfect measure.  I would argue Tannehills decision making was on par with  Darnolds.  Tannehill threw 9 ints in 11 games that last year, to Darnolds 11 ints in 12 games.

Secondly, Scheme affects decision making ability.  If the design sucks, the reads suck, and its 4th down, you try to make something happen.  Also Gase has been accused of discouraging audibles because he doesn't trust his QBs post Manning.

I think he will be better than Teddy simply because he has a stronger arm, is not afraid to take risks, and is not afraid to chuck it down the field.  Teddy would have been fine had he thrown more TD passes.  I predict Sam to have around 4000 yards passing, 25-32 TDs and 12-14 INTs.

Im excited. He's boom or bust. Either we got a 23 year old Franchise QB or we will get a top 3 draft pick.

I think they didn't keep a backup plan on the roster for a reason. They must like next years prospects better than Justin Fields if that was the case

Thats a good point, but I would disagree a bit. I think they liked Sam better than the value of Fields at that draft position.

Adam Gase was coach of Miami 2016,2017 & 2018 and the jets 2019 & 2020

Tannehill QBRs under Gase were: 45.6, 48.6 and 33.2 for an average of  42.5   Ryan Tannehill Stats | ESPN

Darold's QBRs under Gase were:  45.6 and 40.1 for an  average of 42.9 Sam Darnold Stats | ESPN

This surprised me...but under Gase,   Darnold's QBR was higher than Tannehill's.

Tannehill was ranked 32nd by QBR in 2018, his last year under Gase. In 2019 after he left Gase, he was ranked 9th in the regular season, and 4th out 12 in the postseason.    2018 NFL Season Leaders Total QBR | ESPN

In 2018, when Tannehill was under Gase, Darnold was under Bowles.   Darnold, as a rookie, was ranked higher than Tannehil that year. 2018 NFL Season Leaders Total QBR | ESPN

Tannehill's QBR went from 33.2 to 64.2 after he left Gase.  Where will Darnolds 40.1 QBR go to?

Another fine example of why Sam could improve this year. I mean if that Tannyhill character can do it, so can Sam.

Now prepare yourself for the inevitable but, but Sam sucks crowd. They all just know he is destined to fail. You can't be allowed to buoy folks enthusiasm for Sam. Check outside your window for those dark SUVs. lol

    • Any QB worth his weight in gold is going to get his guys the ball. Of course he has to have the protection, coaching and experience to do that. Moreover, it has yet to be determined what type of situation this is for a rookie wideout. The most important thing that will determine that is coaching.
