QB coach Sean Ryan presser: Sam Darnold has the arm, now they're working on feet

So you've got a guy that is already a micromanager being given a super young QB (I think he was 22 at the time)...that translates into 'no way in hell is he going to let that kid make decisions'.

Did Gase limit what Darnold could do because he didn't trust Darnold? Absolutely. But that's more on Gase's inability to trust anyone to do their job.

The sad part was, Darnold might have known better had Gase trusted him.

The media seems to be sheltering Darnold by not asking questions about his performance, and the coaches dont seem to be providing anything either. I know they ate protecting him, but I still wonder how he is doing on the field. I know there isnt pads yet, but i still want to know if he has been accurate and if he has been throwing interceptions or not.

I feel like if he was playing well, they would tell us... i hope he is going to work out.

You're looking for something that isn't there.

They're rebuilding his confidence and his mechanics. Don't expect miracle results in Minicamp.

The media is there one day a week. They can see how he's doing with their own eyes. No one is saying he's struggling. They are saying that he's looking good. Zod said that he was looking as good as any QB he's seen there.

They aren't sheltering him. He is doing as well as you can without pads on. I've heard that he's in command (stepped up and looked to as a leader) and that he's sharp and in point in his throwing.

How much more can they ask Sam, who has taken all the blame for his and the teams failings on himself?  On draft day, didn’t that group of four, including Mel Kiper (can’t remember other names) say that Sam went through a meat grinder in NY, but they couldn’t get him to blame anyone but himself.  He never even complained to friends.

Gase was an egotistical micromanager, it was his way, or else.  He didn’t draft Sam, doubt he knew how to develop him or his skill set....a QB who would dare to go off platform, a backyard playmaker when things broke down.  He’s a smart kid, held offers from Duke, Northwestern and Yale, as well as Utah and a few others.  Some coaches don’t like that.

Meatgrinder is the exact word they used, and they, all 4, said Darnold would be #2 pick this year behind Lawerence.

Add to that incompetent, and you get the jets

I didn't know that.  That's fascinating because he really doesn't come off that way.  He just seems like a nice young kid.

I hope Darnold uses this season to make them all eat crow...with a side of humble pie.

Son of a teacher.  If you listened to Jamis Winston, you’d never know he qualified academically for admission to Stanford - they do not make academic allowances for athletes, or that Kris Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar.

USC makes academic allowances for athletes, but at the end of the day, they’re surrounded by classmates in the top 10% in their classes.  We’ve had some great athletes not make it.

To be fair, these are the same guys that were really focused on Darnold's couch.

They tried to bait Ryan to dis-on  what happened at the jets.

They asked questions like How are you going to "all of a sudden" make his decision making better?

The "all of a sudden" is an unnecessary douche move.

These guys leave out what would be a lot of good questions, like

How is he progressing, what are you expectations and goals, are you doing anything special considering the history?  Is he developing chemistry with his wrs?

They watched the practice, they knew he looked good (per Zod) and then didn't give Ryan a chance to talk about it.  If anything its the opposite.

They're asking people "are you vaccinated" and if they don't get the right answer they rush out and tweet about it....and then its picked up by the national rags.

The media is NOT sheltering Darnold.

Forgot, Harvard also offered…they don’t throw those offers around to just anyone, even athletes.

*We're doing that with all three guys*

Cool

*When the draft comes, you put in your input but the higher ups make the decision*

So he had little to do with any selection in the draft, nice way to say I didn't make a mistake if any...

Now when asked, hehe, disclaimer I did not suggest her to asked this even though my mother knows her first cousin...

* How do you view PJ n Will, is it a competition between the two of them???

Sean Ryan response " yeah, I view them like the rest of these 90 guys, it's all a competition, it's competition for all of us.*

Competition??? Really for all the guys, you don't say...well some may think that's just stupid but hey what do I know.

Why should the OC have a say in who is drafted? Like he said he can tell them who he likes, but when its time to pick that is on Fitt and Rhule.

I would rather have a competition for all 90 guys than just to hand guys starting positions because of their names. That is how you build a football team. MoRon never had competition, vets started until they got injured. Thats how Amini was starting over Norwell.

Igo made very favorable noises about Sam’s early OTA performance but thank  you for your expression of concern.  Duly noted.
