Urban Meyer's NFL coaching career continues to get off to a very Urban Meyer start.

The Jacksonville Jaguars and their new head coach were both hit with heavy fines by the NFL on Thursday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Jaguars were fined $200,000 as well as the forfeiture of two OTA practices in 2022, while Meyer was hit with a personal $100,000 penalty.

...the Jaguars' fines are for violating non-contact rules during team OTAs, specifically in 11-on-11 drills between wide receivers and defensive backs.

Meyer's NFL career had already experienced a rocky start thanks to his hire of former Iowa strength coach Chris Doyle, who was let go by the Hawkeyes after a litany of accusations including racist treatment, stepping on players' fingers during workouts and putting 13 players in the hospital with rhabdomyolysis. Doyle eventually resigned from his Jaguars job as well, but criticism of Meyer for his decision didn't go away.

...the Jaguars weren’t the only team fined by the league this week, as the 49ers and Cowboys were also tagged for OTA violations according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.

According to Schefter, Meyer has been hit with a $100,000 fine while the Jaguars have been fined $200,000 for their violations.

Meyer was fined twice as much as 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan or Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy.

Looks like a fine start to his NFL career.  It will be interesting to see how long he lasts given his history.

Lawrence will do enough to get them to the playoffs as soon as year 2, and likely keep them there for a while. I see Meyer lasting 4-5+ years with moderate success but without a SB probably getting replaced at some point.

I think he will get frustrated that he can't game the system as much as he could in college. I predict three seasons and he develops another unexpected medical crisis.

He succeeded in college in large part to having superior athletes and bending the rules for his players to keep them on the field. Will be interesting to see if he is truly as smart as he thinks he is.

Three seasons might be generous.

He may be another Schiano.  He doesn't know the rules, doesn't listen to anybody trying to tell him what they are, and thinks he somehow has discovered ways to get an edge that no coach before him in the history of the NFL ever thought of.  All he needs to do is get desperate enough to start having his defense attack the V formation after stinking the place up for 59 minute so he can say "we give it all until the end."

Schiano lasted about two years, so we'll see how this goes.  It will likely be another example of Jerry Glanville's statement that the NFL stands for Not For Long.  Unlike Schiano, Meyer will feel the water getting hot and bail out.

A "fine" start indeed. Not a big Urban Meyer fan but geez that's brutal.

Of all the college coaches who moved from college to the NFL, only 2 have made the playoffs within 2 years. Chip Kelly and Jim Harbaugh. None did it with a rookie QB. So if Meyers takes them to the playoffs with Lawrence within 2 years it will be a first in the NFL. In other words it ain't happening.

Jacksonville Jaguars coach Urban Meyer defended the hiring of a former Iowa assistant accused of racism, saying Thursday he “vetted him thoroughly along with our general manager and owner.”

Iowa agreed to pay strength coach Chris Doyle $1.1 million in a resignation agreement last June after more than a dozen former players said he bullied and discriminated against them. Doyle denied the allegations. An investigation by an outside law firm later found that the program’s rules “perpetuated racial and culture biases and diminished the value of cultural diversity,” and allowed coaches to demean players without consequence.
