Shaq Thompson has grown into a leader, and grown

Recommended Posts

Panthers PR force this stuff every season when there still isn't anyone filling the leadership void. Last year it was Tre Boston.

The players choose their leaders, not the people who do their website.

Perceived or real, Shaq has been the proverbial 3rd wheel since he arrived.  He's not as gritty or aggressive as TD.  He's not in command of the Defense like Luke.  He was supposed to compliment the other 2 but that never really happened either.

I've always felt like he was never the right fit.  He needed a team that would bring out the beast, this family friendly org is never gonna do that.

Hes a good player, deserves to be in the league and start for that matter.  I only suggest he may have been better elsewhere.  We have a way of softening players here.  I hope that's changing with the new ownership but it takes time.  But its too late for Shaq to be anything other than what he already is, solid starter.

The players voted Thompson to be a captain last year.

Shaq is the new Rucker.. amirite?

Rucker has a resume.

9 years = 139 games (Only missed 5 games entire career)

416 total takles

55.5 sacks

16 Forced Fumbles /7 recoveries/ 1 INT

Pro-Bowler ('03)

Shaq - 6 years = 86 games (missed 10)/468 total tackles/9.5 sacks/5 FF's/ 3 FRs/ 1 INT

I'm not sure hes done enough to merit the comparison.

Shaq is a good dude, great leader and whether he is over paid or not he has real value on this team. Especially with how young this team is plus he’s actually a pretty good linebacker.

This is a huge year for him.  His salary escalates after this year and that translates to a $10M jump in his cap hit for '22 and '23.  He crosses that line where he is cheaper to release than to hold onto, in terms of dead cap vs. cap hit.

Our cap situation next year is good, so that alone should not be a factor in unloading him.  But, it does mean this year is THE year to show what he can do and is worth the investment.

Here's hoping he makes the cap/contract numbers moot because he establishes himself in the defense.

What a nerve the Panthers players have that play with Shaq and practice with  him day in and day out thinking they know him better than the posters here on the Huddle.:)
