The will be the partial fallacy in comparing the trade though. It isn’t just Fields vs Darnold. It’s Fields vs Darnold + Horn. Let’s say Fields comes out and puts up good rookie numbers. Let’s say he throws 23 TDs and rushed for 3 TDs and has 14 turnover. That’s a great season for a rookie QB.

If Darnold comes out and throws 20 TDs and 12 turnovers but our defense is elite due in large part to the fact our secondary can jam WRs at the line giving our pas rush that extra second to get to the QB, then where does that put us?

Many on here will simply compare Fields to Darnold. But it’s Darnold + Horn as a collective that we should be comparing

True, but I would add that at some point it has to become about the question of a legit franchise QB. If Fields and Darnold become one, then good. In my mind Darnold doesn't have to be definitively better than or equal to Fields. But, if Fields becomes a legit superstar QB and Darnold basically flops, then any criticism that Rhule gets, well, he's just going to have to suck it up and take. Sure, we needed a DB, but we needed a franchise QB more, and legitimate franchise QBs don't fall off of trees. Mind you, that it may take years to fully answer these questions. But, if Fields comes out lighting the world on fire and Darnold is the Darnold of the last three years, Rhule will not only be talked about on the Huddle, he'll be discussed across the NFL for years.

The quarterback outweighs any other positions. If Fields turns out to be a star, it will hurt us for many years until we find a franchise QB. I would trade Derrick Brown, Jaycee Horn and Terrace Marshall right now for Justin Herbert. All 32 general managers would too.

All we ended up with in 2011 was Cam Newton. He changed this franchise for almost a decade. You would still take Cam with the first pick again in a redo draft.

We went to two Divisional playoffs (one Super Bowl) and were barely over .500 in nine years with this 'franchise changing' QB on our roster.

Yes, it's a QB driven league, but as Aaron Rodgers shows (or hell Eli Manning if you want to go the other extreme), it takes 52 other talented guys pulling in the same direction.

Let’s be that good team without a QB. How have that fare for the Bears?

Why not build a good team and keep throwing darts at the board if we're still struggling for a QB in a year or two?

I'd rather be one missing piece away than multiple.

Once Aaron Rodgers hit his prime…he is basically an automatic winning season.   Which is basically true for Russell Wilson, Brady and almost every elite QB in the NFL.

Cam’s body failed him and the fact the NFL refused to treat him as a QB.

I like Horn, and I'm not going to pretend like I know how Fields career pans out.

BUT...

You still have to take Fields in that draft unless we just absolutely hated him.  Should he have success, this staff then deserves all the hate in the world for buying Teddy stock, (potentially) Darnold stock, and passing on (potentially) a franchise QB. I feel like a lot of our plans got shifted after the Watson news came out, but I sure as poo hope the Panthers FO knows something about Fields that a lot of media, fans, etc. don't.

Cam changed our franchise for almost a decade.? Check out all of those back to back winning seasons… You need a team around the QB as well, in which we failed Cam. First thing the Chargers did is try to beef up their line, because they know it starts there after you have your guy.

    • This is a two-part quiz that takes 5 minutes to take--if you need modification, they are available. Once you submit the answers to the first 2 questions (3 total answers) you take the USA Today online NFL Draft Quiz.  Complete the template below in your response.  Later tonight (after 8 pm), I will share the answers to the first two questions--please do not share your results until after 8 PM.  Obviously, if you choose not to participate, just don't participate and leave the replies for those who want to do this. (Honor system--Googling is CHEATING) 1.  Franchises with the most #1 picks in NFL History (2 are correct), so this counts as 2 points, 1 for each correct answer:  a) Bucs b) Jets c) Colts d) Rams e) Oilers/Titans 2.  How many #1 overall picks for the teams above were the most in NFL history? a) 3 b) 5 c) 6 d) 7 e) 9 OK for the next 10 questions, go to the link and take the 10 question online quiz.  Report your answers for the 2 questions above and the number correct from your online quiz. https://draftwire.usatoday.com/2021/11/01/nfl-draft-history-trivia-quiz/ SCALE:  12-13 correct:   Draft Royalty - you probably cheated though. 10-11  correct:  Stud.  Your brain is full of useless information. 8-9  correct:  Mr. or Mrs. Mediocre, which has probably been your goal for some time. 6-7  correct:  Snorkeler:  You can't quite reach the surface of the NFL knowledge pool, but you are close. 4-5  correct:  Life Support Recipient.  The people around you are Huddlers voting when to pull the plug.  0-3 correct:  Blue Tent Dweller.  You scored below random chance, meaning a toddler or monkey could have done better.  Stay in the blue tent.  The team is doing well without your input.   There is a non-monetary reward and consequence for being the top and low score.  All in fun.
