OP is reminiscing on the ''older'' Drew Brees. 

When they had guys like Colston, Devry Henderson, Robert Meachum, and a handful of others they challenged deep often, same for LSU. 

The thing was they could ALSO dice you up underneath when you played to protect versus big plays, as Drew's arm weakened they became more of a run / defensive oriented team with a shot here and there just to keep you honest.

That's basically how a West Coast attack works.

We haven't used one here since Seifert. Fox and Rivera were both Coryell guys and Capers ran an E-P.

This is a two fold problem. Your OC called a play short of the downs, and the QB threw it there.

The thing is, we really didn't get an opportunity to see what this offense is really made to do. Not having CMC for the majority of the year took away the underneath routes, screens and pitchouts that keep linebackers up close and safeties edging into the box. We did begin making the most of Curtis Samuel, but it was already too late.

Mixed in with a defense that couldn't hold ground to save its life and yeah, that offense stood no chance.

Maybe this year it will be able to work and we can move down the field consistently and give our defense some time on the bench. 

Sheesh, we really came into this season with a lot to fix.

what it really sounds like isSam Darnold is new to the offense and also historically not very good to date.  And the Panthers plan is to just have him safely check down and not ask much of him for awhile as they continue to work in their project. 

Reports have been pretty consistent that he has been just checking down in camp and playing it safe overall.  Probably because he is being told to do that.  But that isn't ideal.  That is simply what you do with someone who you don't believe can or should have the O wide open IMO. 

it was clear Joe Brady ripped of the Sean Payton model and took it to LSU....and the risky deep shots are just as much part of the offense as the short yardage game.   I think we are going to see a heavy CMC start to the season and a lot of small ball by design.

The key for Darnold this year will be the situation surrounding him.  If we are keeping the game close, if we are staying ahead of the chains, etc he will have less need to be the hero and hopefully he'll just play within the system.

If we start to get behind in games, get behind the down and distance, it will encourage his less desirable traits.

Which I guess you could say is the bad version of the Coryell

If we implemented a majority WCO system I would be deeply disappointed, honestly.  It's the most boring thing to watch.

When done right, it wins a lot of games.

Can't speak for anybody else, but I'd much rather watch boring wins than exciting losses.

It's a fine line. For instance, Teddy always took the safest and quickest option instead of gambling. He was cautious to a fault and hampered the offense as a result. Darnold, by his nature, is a gunslinger. Hence why we saw so many awful and ill advised INT's in his career. He leans towards trying to make the big play like most gunslingers do. 

We just need to get him somewhere in the middle of that scale. "Taking what the defense gives you" while also having the nuts to make throws to score and try to make plays when they are needed. 

Teddy couldn't finish the drive.  He would go limp inside the 20.  Hopefully we may actually finish most of those this season.

Honestly, the fact he threw one of his two passes out of the endzone on Sunday shows that he might actually be making progress because in years past, I'm not sure if he would have done the same thing instead of forcing a ball into the EZ to make a big play. 

I remain cautiously optimistic. 

Smitty gave Sam a lot of props for that decision. Good decision making. Live to fight another down.
