Matt Rhule defends Joe Brady

No game will play out perfectly, despite design. There are many moving parts and variables within both teams that interact on the field of play. If you come out with more points than your opponent and see that you could have played better with some small changes/reversals of fortune, you had a good week. In the end, half the teams in the league would trade places with us today. (talking about W/L - don't be pedantic. :P)

Maybe they went vanilla when they were up to save something for the Saints. They were holding Back so the Saints couldn't scout as good.   Two steps ahead...

Good take.

Look on the Jets' game as the 4th pre-season game, with the reps given the starters equaling a tune-up for the season to come.

Now we get down to business.  Look out for Robby, who was underused.

We purposely kept ourselves out of the end zone of the worst team in the league for an entire half so we wouldn't give the Saints extra game film?

Not that, but it may just be that we were setting them up not to expect quick slants over the middle yo Robbie, in the 10-15 yd range we so studiously avoided.

THAT would be chess, 3 moves ahead.

I mean this is the type of game football is. If we convert those chances early in the game and win comfortably no one would be talking about questioning Rhule and Brady. Just like how a quarterback is only as good as his kicker, so too is play calling only as good as its execution. I find no issue with what Rhule is saying here.

Just my opinion, but I'd be inclined to say Brady.

History, says, if we are playing conservative football, sitting on a lead, and playing to the defense....that is Matt Rhule.

That's how he made his name and got to the NFL.  Putting it on the defense.

Brady did fine. It came down to execution and being subpar at some positions on the o. The theory that we purposely didn't score in the red zone to not give up game film... might be the most ridiculous thing Ive ever read on this site  (except the Hurney 2.0 bullshit, that takes the cake).

From the Athletic

So perhaps some of us were too hard on Brady. The calls could have yielded points if the execution was there.

Football is ALWAYS about execution.

Why did Miami beat App State? Execution. App has a bad snap on punt team that goes for a safety. App throws an interception inside their own 10 yard line. App's QB overthrows the TE in the endzone and has to settle for a field goal. App missed a two-point conversion on their final touchdown due to a fumbled snap.

The game was decided by 2 points.

Execution friends, is what decides football games that are close.

Anyone who immedietely turns to blame coaches without breaking down the plays that they disagree with don't know football. Part of that is why I left the Huddle for a couple of years. Andddd it's still the same.
