The video showing Jacksonville Jaguars coach Urban Meyer fondling a woman in a bar was shocking within the NFL for reasons beyond the actions themselves. As the news was breaking, coaches from other teams struggled to comprehend how it could have happened when it happened.

“It wasn’t something from six months ago?” one coach asked as the news was unfolding.

By now you’ve heard just how uncommon, even unprecedented, it is for NFL head coaches to stay behind while their teams return home without them. Head coaches typically would have been evaluating game video as early as the flight home, meeting with their teams the next morning and getting injury updates from trainers. Meyer remained in Ohio, site of the Jaguars’ 24-21 defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals last week, to visit family and, ultimately, to star in a video that brought embarrassment upon him, his wife, his broader family and the organization.

The fallout remains intense. Across the league, the situation continues to spur discussions regarding leadership,

What the hell?  Why in the world would this woman be fired for that?  She didn't do anything wrong...

I’m not either, momma should have taught her daughter better….you would think she’d (mom) keep her mouth shut and draw the family around her daughter till it goes away, or media loses interest.  Incidents like that is why I’ve never drunk or put myself in stupid situations.  Mama taught me that.

This is absolutely spot on. If you are a celeb or pro athlete or politician you really got to walk a tight rope if you doing something you not supposed to do - like have ongoing extra marital affairs with women and porn stars like Stormy Daniels - better make them sign a NDA!

Her career shouldn't be fuged and she shouldn't be getting harassed for what was honestly pretty silly and ridiculous on her part. 

Meyers job is in jeopardy not because of what he did in the video itself, but because he left his team obstensibly to see his family and ended up going viral in a bar... All while his team just suffered a huge loss and was on an extended losing spree.

D.J. Byrnes, a Columbus, Ohio, union electrician’s apprentice, had already put back a few drinks last Saturday when he checked his phone and saw that someone had sent him a doozy: a brief video of Jacksonville Jaguars coach Urban Meyer at a restaurant with a young woman dancing on his lap.

Byrnes, 34 years old, has worn many hats. He once got in trouble for allegedly trying to rob some drug dealers in Montana. He took classes at Ohio State, though he never graduated, and still roots for the football team. He ran for the Ohio state House of Representatives and lost, garnering just 24.5% of the vote. 

Almost immediately after Meyer made those remarks late Monday morning, Byrnes sat down at a table in the breakroom at his job as an electrician. That’s when another source reached out on Twitter with a direct message and an even juicier tip. 

"Are you aware of the other video?" the message said.

Nobody outside of his family cares if Meyer danced with some ho at a bar.  What players & NFL execs do care about is his lack of leadership and work ethic:

  • he didn't take the team plane home (which is HIGHLY unusual for a head coach and shows very poor leadership)
  • said he needed to "clear his head" with the weekend off - suggesting he's already overwhelmed after just 4 NFL games
  • instead of breaking down film for his next opponent (coached by one of his former Ohio State staff), he's dancing around and getting drunk

NFL coaching is all about the grind.  If you're not plugged into your team 24/7, you're not doing your job.  Why should players trust coaches who aren't preparing the offensive / defensive schemes & putting them in positions to make plays.  They shouldn't.

A lack of work ethic is the kiss of death in the NFL.

      Very good points.  I also think you reach an age where your enthusiasm wanes, you quit learning and start relying on experience, and you lose touch with the younger generations of players--it happens.  And you are right about Bryce.  He is frustrated and he took a ton of heat--I can't imagine where he was mentally, but I have some idea.   Bryce is very smart-he needs to beat teams with his mind more than his arm.  He could not play chess when everyone around him was a confused pawn.  This season, he will use more motion to tip coverages and he will use more pre-snap reads.  Than means he should not be breaking the huddle with 12 seconds on the play clock and rushing to get the play off--there are so many things that can impact a QB's play, and there are many signs that he was provided the least possible chance to succeed.  In my view, this is his rookie season.  Last year was a fire drill.

      I also find it curious we decided to practice at home instead of up in NY… not sure I would have made that decision. Need a feel for the ice and boards. Maybe we’ll do a very limited morning skate tomorrow.

      It really was crazy. The NFL hype on him was nuts. And I think for our FO, we basically outsmarted ourselves. Some of that has to do with Tepper going against the grain and wanting show how much of a genius he is. Stroud should have been the guy. I thought it might end up being an NFL horror story of sending an undersized kid to get crushed as first overall. I'll give him this though he is tough as nails.  This season will give us a better measure of where he's at, I think. I was hoping he'd come back a little bigger muscle wise though.
