Darnold might be the next one out the door

Nobody is going near Watson until his legal troubles are behind him, which means he isn’t playing this year. I wouldn’t doubt for a second that Tepper would snag him as soon as he’s available.

Trading the farm for a qb who won't play for over a year? Sounds like a panther thing to do.

Arguable... can't say your wrong.

But extending Darnold?  Did they actually think he'd perform so well this year under their brilliant leadership that extending him for $18+M was a better bet?  Because, if they did, I question their judgement.

The SAFER bet would have been not to extend him and if, yet again in 2021 he was again Sam Darnold, if they *wanted* to keep him they could keep him at a lesser cost and, if the fool chose to leave anyway, have no impact on the salary cap.

But, like I said, its as if Hurn-Dawg's ghost continues to haunt the GM offices.

It was a 5th year option.

Had they not taken it and wanted to resign him they’d be on the hook for a multi year contract.

So, they actually side stepped being stuck with Darnold. And being sure about him with two years of play before resigning instead of one.

They did choose the safer option. No problem with it.

The only less harmful option requires hindsight, in that Darnold isn’t extended, then fails, then walks. But at that point why would you trade a second for a guy you don’t believe in enough for two years?

They chose the best option.

He needs to have more than 1.23 seconds to throw

he’s also an above average QB, not elite but not trash

Average is 16/32. I think he's in the bottom 16.

He also had plenty of time today on a good amount of throws and missed open people/took bad sacks

what metrics would rank him as above average QB?  You have to cherry pick games and certain stats IMO to set that narrative.

He hasn’t been average in the NFL.  Throughout his career he has been a below average starting QB.

People forget Darnold was like our third maybe fourth options. We were in both the Stafford and Watson sweepstakes, and the rumor is we wanted to trade up to the second pick.

So this organization settled for Darnold.

Yes.

Obligating themselves to MORE money to Sam Darnold.

"The best option"

lol

This is why the Carolina organization is doomed for the foreseeable future.

Have fun! lol

There's no way in heck Tepper will let them "test" out another project.  A rookie deal paired with an 18 mil contract at QB for 1 more season is nothing, nada, zilch.  The option is fully guaranteed but it's all about allocation.  The avg QB salary is $24 mil.  A rookie contract next year would be pennies paired with that.  But who's to say we can't trade him for a 6th or 7th like we did that random Ted guy.

Why are so many trying to look all snarky when JR and Tepper are running two VERY different ships?  The whole "franchise is such a loser" mentality is just a cop out.  People claim to be fans but bash the entire org top-down? Now that's having fun lol.

18 million is a penance for a starting QB honestly. About what Sams worth right now.

I think the Anderson extension is more egregious than Sam's but that's just me.

There was a play in the Dallas game where Sam made a poor throw to Anderson deep down the field.  It sticks out in my mind because Robby's body language told me he was done trying.  As an example, the drop he had, in the fourth quarter,  which could have extended the drive.  Something about him has been pouty/off.

Then why did the proprietor of this establishment sell him as the next Messiah?

Oh, wait, nevermind...

I know why.

And yet the same things keep happening.

Again.

And again.

And again.

And again.

(Feel free to shove your head further underground.)

So what are you getting at?  That we as "fans" should turn on an owner?

I don't like Darnold and not a current fan of Rhule and we've always had OL issues (minus like 3 years in the entire history).  People hype up guys going into seasons, and you along with others stayed on the "not a fan" side this offseason (not even cautiously optimistic).  So what are you suggesting?  I just see negative nonsense.
