Game 15 (11/18) Hurricanes (12-2-0) @ Ducks (10-4-3)

The Canes got physically pounded by Anaheim in the goal-less 2nd period, but they rebounded well in the 3rd when RBA put the Staal line out there on alternating shifts and they got very heavy with the Ducks and slowed them down.

When Jarvis scored about halfway thru the 3rd, the Canes basically went into forecheck mode and stayed pretty physical throughout the remainder of the period. It worked to the point the Ducks couldn't get Gibson off the ice and gain a man-advantage until there was only 1:30 or so left in the game.

Very well executed. I thought the way Anaheim was going, any mistake by the Canes would be capitalized on and we'd have overtime to deal with. But there weren't any real mistakes made in the 3rd, especially after Jarvis scored with a little over 10 minutes remaining.

Great point here.

Staal’s line dominated the last eight minutes of the game just moving the puck behind the net from one side to the other.

This team knows how to finish.

You know they aren't all gonna be sexy, but when your team can bang them anyway....that's a great sign.

It's a long season and the league is full of parody.  Whether the team is off a bit because of the travel, or time change, to grind out these dubs speaks volumes.  If you think about it, we just had daylight savings time.  To the biological clock of our team that game felt like it started at 11pm.  If you're a finely tuned athlete that has a physical routine, that will make a big difference in energy levels.

Ultimately what's winning us these type of games is our line depth.  When we can roll out 4 solid lines, we should be able to take over in the 3rd and that's what happened.

I'd like to see faster starts, Svech get his scoring swag back, and a little pep in the PP.  However, no matter what team, their will always be stretches where a player can't get it into the net, or the PP slumps.  To win in spite of that says more, then when those things are clicking.  After a loss to Philly at home, to turn around and beat 3 good teams in a row...very impressive.

Yeah they tried to roughen the game up which was surprising as the Ducks rely on their speed more than anything, but I suppose the Canes matched their speed and skill well enough Plan B was in order.

Once RBA went to Staal's line it really slowed the Ducks down and I really think the other lines followed suit and really started forechecking better and matching Anaheim's physicality.

Another solid game...a few hiccups here and there but Freddie is playing lights out.  We can't expect him to do it every game, but man has that been a solid signing.

Other teams compete well in the 1st and partly through the second because of adrenaline.  Second half of the game, our conditioning and depth really shines through.

Sometimes it's 2:30, the bar is closing and you gotta take what you can get...

Wait, what were we talking about again?

    • Many times the best deal is the one you have.  This team has  2 top 40 picks with a draft full of talent and a team full of holes.  Whatever they do they should not squander the opportunity that is sitting in front of them.  Best you can hope for is that they don’t overthink it.
    • Space eater isn't our biggest need. But I see a value to good to pass up after his boneheaded DUI during the draft process. I assume this moves him completely out of the second round maybe pushed into the 4th. I would be hard pressed to not pull the trigger in the 3rd round somewhere.  At 6'4 366 I would love to insert him day one and just really be done with Shy tuttle who is just a jag. This guy would be an upgrade and one small mistake of partying to hard doesn't indicate a everyday problem. This kid can't be blocked 1 on 1 and just allowed texas to stop the run of his strength. he bats down a ton of passes and i would consider him a value getting a almost first round talent that late in the draft. what say you?
