What exactly did Matt Rhule excel at in college?

Not just Tepper. He was the hottest coaching prospect of that year.

He was just that.

We have to remember, though, that the teams seeking coaches were all really, really bad teams. We were one of the least bad teams.

That's a lot of organizations with terrible ownership groups, bad track records, decades of losing, sometimes even potential curses (looking at you Lions). If you think about it, a wise team would avoid the coaching candidate most wanted by the bunch, unless they were a proven NFL coach (and there were none in the race).

This may be how eternal bottom feeding teams in a parity league stay at the bottom. We pretty much went all in on the most popular candidate among the special ed students at the NFL school. And here's where we ended up.

So temple was a door mat, matt turned them into a ranked team. Not too bad for TEMPLE! Now Baylor is a bit different. They have deep pockets and much better overall facilities than Temple. Also had success within the same decade. The Briles and Grobe staffs really killed that program for a hot minute. Grobe kinda stepped in poo from Briles and then bails (no fault after all the crap Briles did that came out during that 2016 season). IIRC, Matt got a program on probation (may not have stuck). He had to deal with the fallout for 2 years. In year 3 back to top 25 (13th at points in the year) with massive turnover and a hard as hell recruiting environment due to the scandal at the school. most folks outside Baylor called for them to shut down or suspend the program in 16 and 17 due to how bad it was. So that 2019 season was kinda special for him (now it was soft wins with losses to OU twice by 10 points total and a loaded UGA team)

So yeah the appeal was definitely there as he turned 2 schools around. Now that didn't mean he could just do the same here. Now the real fun question: do you give him the all important year 3. Seams to be the year he really hits his stride. Idk kinda not seeing the improvements expected to get it. Really puzzled on the OL and inconsistent play all over the field. Some of that goes back to the staff. Now maybe he gets it right in FA draft next year and rights the ship, or more of the same inconsistent play/calls we have seen for 2 years now. Idk

Chip Kelly was that guy once too.

    • It makes sense. It needs to fit the need. I am ignoring subtlety, but you don’t hire a heavy metal band for a church picnic. I hope.  Fitting needs has been a fuging problem with all the yearly changes in HC, DC, OC, they need to settle that down.
    • For one thing, do you guys think we are gonna be some shootout survivors? Or do you think we still need to limit the other offense?  And why don’t we let the new management decide who is in play at WR, that is here already? I expect a WR to be taken. I still hold to the idea that our QB doesn’t recognize or can’t execute NFL open. It is an issue he needs to get straight. But, I get it and have no issue with 33 or 39 being WR.  If later on we think we can make a great bet on a guy that was overlooked, fine.  But let’s don’t pretend the defense doesn’t need to get buttoned up and if there is a top talent, deal with it.
