How Rhule's Fug Ups Secured Him Another Year

It is clear Matt Rhule has another year. With his media appearances and future talk, the odds that he finds himself on the street grow lower every passing day.

It's a sad reality for Panther fans - myself included. After all, as the season progressed, the Panthers only seemed to be falling flat on their face furthermore. It makes no sense, based on the teams awful performance, why he still finds himself heading this professional football team.

One particular fan seemed to try and rationalize why Rhule is still here, and honestly it makes sense in the worst way:

_____

My answer, and what I'm pretty sure is going through Tepper's head, is this: right now, our QBs are fuging terrible. We have neither the cap space (only $26 million) or draft picks to trade for a veteran. We're inalterably stuck with Darnold for another season, the QB draft class is weak, and frankly, the OL is so bad that nobody's going to succeed behind it anyway. Next year, we'll have $100 million in cap space, a lot more draft capital to trade with, and a QB class in which taking someone in the 1st might actually be an option. Plus we'll have had a year to focus fire on rebuilding the OL.

Basically, if we were to dump Rhule now, we're an extremely unattractive landing spot for a potential head coach. We'd probably have a hard time wooing a top tier candidate. Next year? Entirely different story. Wait out Rhule for one more year, fire him if it's awful, start fresh when we have more resources to rebuild with.

_____

It does make sense. In no way shape or form is this a situation any new or good head coach will want to dive into. Waiting it out until 2023 to make it a more attractive job is potentially the game Tepper is playing.

Of course, that means sacrificing 2022 to another dead season. Sadly, pretty much all of this is a result of Rhule ineptitude and his bringing, as these issues are caused by him.

In a way, Rhule's fug up secured himself another season. The damning reality.

Given that, it seems Tepper's plan is get past this next awful season and blow it all up. However, that gamble also is contingent with Rhule not fugging up furthermore and wasting away 2023's potential with more bad contracts and throwing out picks.

I wouldn't put that below Rhule either.

So, in light of this, it seems 2022 is a sure lame duck season at this pace. The hope is Rhule's power is taken away from him at managing player personnel, contracts and draft to minimize the risk of further handcuffing the Panthers to him, or that he does not fug up any further on that front. 2023 is the hope for a true good future as a more attractive coaching destination.

Nevertheless, the damage is done and the Panthers are handcuffed to it. The bad guy wins another year and his ineptitude happened to protect him. The worst kind of situation.

“Rhule is so bad, he has made hiring a competent head coach for the organization an impossibility, ergo we must allow him to stay and continue to make things even worse.”

I have to tell you, buddy, that explanation is neither rational nor defensible.

In fact, it borders on the insane.

Oh I'm not here agreeing with the process. In fact I'm on the same boat as you.

Rather, this is an attempt at rationalizing the irrationality of keeping Rhule and finding the slightest silver lining.

Blowing it up right now is the best option period. But, this post may be the mindset Tepper has.

Whether that's a good or bad remains to be seen, and arguably put it's risky in general. If it were me heading this team Rhule would've been gone since the Giants blow-out and then I'd hand over all control to Fitterer and let him man the show.

Biggest downside to OP, is you give Rhule another year to dictate contracts and player resources….that will impact the future.  Because they will be made to fit his vision.

That’s by far the main problem.  Please strip some of that man’s power.  He will tank our resources.  His vision is the equivalent of wearing drunk goggles

Mark my words, these guys are going to go bananas trying to win now. poo, you saw what a three game winning streak did, watch what the threat of unemployment does.

Yes, that's a very, very valid concern.

Working under the assumption Rhule is here next year, at the bare minimum he needs to be stripped of roster control.  The GM reports to the owner, and only the owner.  The owner needs to let the GM know that he is being judged based on a completely different set of criteria than Rhule.  Fitts:  "There's me doing my job, you doing yours. Your job is to coach the team I give you."

If Rhule really truly believes "1000%" that it's working, then next year will be the year, regardless of what assets we spend or don't spend on the roster.  Is he building a culture?  Great.  It should be in place now.  Show us.

There are only 32 possible NFL head coaching jobs. That is a very small elite group. If a candidate gets too picky there’s a chance they miss the opportunity entirely.

The longer Matt Rhule is in control the likelihood of him fuging stuff up for the future continues to increase. The quicker you stop the bleeding the the faster our recovery is.

It would be nice to give a new coach a season to evaluate the roster before handing him 100 million in cap space.

And if you neuter Rhule's ability to make any personnel decisions that have this type of franchise-damning impact, you're basically putting the writing up on the wall.  Which I'm fine with.  What's he going to do - lose games on purpose just to spite the organization?

That is what Fitterer and Tepper need to decide. If Rhule says let me do it my way and they concede total  control then the only reasonable answer is that they are giving him enough rope to hang him. He either produces in year 3 which is what he sold Tepper he would do or he is gone. I am sure O line is the biggest need and Fitterer will do his part to bring in talent.

If I were Tepper I would be asking Fitterer to take more control over who we get personnel wise regarding players who will be here after Rhule is gone.  It was fine to give him the reins initially but nothing says he should be making decisions.  And let's be real here both Brady and Snow for as bright as they are which play  poor situational football. Guys out of position, penalties, blown coverages and on and on. On both sides of the ball we were undisciplined and unmotivated. No sense of urgency or purpose.

We can be fine with Rhule if he sticks to his processes and is the mouthpiece and rah rah guy for the team. But his coordinators need to take charge of the gameplanning and especially the adjustments. And Snow needs to have some serious NFL experienced defensive consultants or whatever you want to call them to help him call games and make adjustments.  I am sure Snow saw the problem with run defense but he just couldn't fix it. He was so about speed he sacrificed fundamentals like gap control and playing the run first.

The personnel with a number of upgrades would be pretty good and surely something that would attract a new coach. And Tepper spends the bucks. I don't think that Tepper is thinking lame duck season and is keeping Rhule because he can't find someone else. I think Tepper committed to three years which is why Rhule never worried for his job. This is it I think. Playoffs or bust in 2022. This will be Teppers fifth year. I think he is angry and sick about the results so far. He is a prideful man and he thinks he is the smartest guy in the room. It hasn't to be tough looking at the Jerry Jones of the world and thinking he knows more about football than I do. Or at least about winning.

There is no excuse for keeping Rhule. Good coaches go to bad teams. So the not attractive thing doesn't fly. What does fly is Teppers ego is keeping a crappy coach in hope that he not terribly wrong.

Exactly. Keeping Rhule for another year just makes things worse.

Valid points op but if this is the mindset of tepper we are doomed, the new Cleveland browns

in no shape or form should we waste a season away just to provide a new coach with a better start point.

when us as poster are becoming in unison yet the higher ups can’t see it, it’s all time bad, there’s not one single positive anyone can pull from Rhule’s first two seasons here

    • I know you’re upset about today’s UNC loss, but if you insult my team I’m coming back at you… VT Football has won the ACC football title FOUR times, including in their 1st year. VT Basketball won the ACC title in 2022 and we beat UNC and Duke in the process. Miami has some huge creds too, so I don’t understand why you’d suggest those programs are dragging down the ACC either.  They aren’t.  The ACC needs to get out of it’s own way.
    • VT football didn’t work out, lol, tell me what UNC has done in ACC football since then.  Please.
