After today, everyone should understand you need a QB

Bengals just won a playoff game because they found a QB.  Their fans have hope for the next 15 years because they found a QB.

Everyone wants that Luck or Lawrance type of prospect but that very rarely happens.  Look at Burrow and Allen, opposite ends of the spectrum.

Allen has loads of physical tools, but he played for a smaller school and had accuracy problems, just like Trey Lance.  How often last year did people talk about Lance being too risky.

On the other hand, Burrow played for a bigtime school, great accuracy, and great production, but how often did people talk about his "low ceiling".  He could be in this year's draft and half of our fans would complain because he can 't run fast enough or throw hard enough.

You don't need a great O-line to win in this league, but you do need a good QB.  Heck you don't even need a good o-line if your QB is good enough.  Conversely it doesn't matter how great your O-line is if your QB is terrible.  A great QB with an average line will win a lot more than a great O-line with an average QB, there is only so much your O-line can do.

Problem with our fan base is our O-line has been so historically bad everyone has lost track of that.  Finding a good QB is hard, you can do everything right and it still now work out, you have to take your chances and hope for some good fortune.  

Finding a "good enough"  O-line is the easy part of the equation.  Not saying every staff can, not saying our staff can, but overall putting together a good enough O-line is a lot more predictable than finding a franchise QB.

The talk about Burrow lacking elite traits coming out of LSU baffled the hell out of me. Did they not watch him throw dimes 40+ yards down the field on the move? That's elite traits.

Having a competent OL is essential-having a dominant OL without a high end QB is a pointless and costly endeavor.

with rare exception, the day of “building around the QB” is long since gone, and the “prepare the roster for a future QB” argument was always moronic.

the value and rarity of finding of an opportunity to take a meaningful swing at a franchise QB far exceeds getting a “sure” thing at any other spot on the field, assembling a competent OL is fairly easy task.

also if the Bengalis took penei Sewell over Jamarr chase they wouldn’t have made the playoffs and I just want everyone to swallow that

I doubt anyone disagrees you need a good QB to win, but you just don't take stabs at it.  Taking QBs out of desperation will get you Bridgewater, Darnold and a washed up Cam Newton. 

Drafting QBs is even a bigger crap shoot.  For the record I liked both Allen and Lance coming out of college.  Heck, I was the driver of the Trey Lance bandwagon last year on the Huddle.

The only people who compare bridgewater and darnold to an actual high end draft pick at the position are the people who swallowed the team propaganda on what clever maneuvers those were

because they were established as what they were and the only people who didn’t already know it are making personnel decisions for your favorite team

You get our current QB situation by refusing to make a real investment in the position. When you shop in the scratch and dent section scrounging for a bargain, usually you just end up with scratched and dented junk.

You need both. A great QB won't play great with pressure in his face all day. An average QB will play better when he has all day to throw. But there is also cap to consider. Great QB is 40-50m a year. There's going to be some balancing or you won't be able to afford an average line.

The bears are sitting at home and Mac Jones is ass and probably already at his ceiling or close to it.

Our current coaching staff would not correctly develop either one of those guys and they would have looked worse than our QBs this year did.

The signing of Darnold and Teddy were mistakes, but what hasnt been when it comes to this staff?

They have been here 2 years and made maybe 3 or 4 good moves.

As it stands right now we have one great player under contract from this Era in Chinn the rest are holdovers or they are FAs this year.

We have spent 2 years to add Chinn to our roster.

Yup, but you also only find the last busted boxes on the shelf waiting to the last minute on Christmas Eve to buy.  That's this QB draft in a nutshell, there's 2-3 that could-possibly-maybe turn into a franchise QB, but the packing is very questionable.  We waited until the 11th hour and now are desperate.  So do we still take a chance on these noticeably flawed products anyway?

My answer is no.

fans confuse arm strength with the ability to make big time throws.  They are looking to the guy that can throw 75 yards.

Tom Brady makes as many big time throws as anyone in the league but I would guess in a long throw competition, he would probably come in bottom 10 in the league in distance.

Bengals have a terrible O-line.  Your O-line needs to be just good enough to allow your QB to be good.  

There is only so much your O-line can do.  The QB is immensely more important and harder to find.

My answer is no. 

At #6 you might be getting your pick of the litter instead of the 3rd or 4th option. You aren't getting the Trevor Lawrence or Andrew Luck type prospect everyone wants unless you're sitting at #1 overall in the right draft class.
